Disturbing cause of deadly Mexican Navy crash into Brooklyn Bridge 'revealed' as second victim is named

Daily Mail19-05-2025

The Mexican Navy ship which careened into the Brooklyn Bridge with deadly consequences may have suffered an engine failure, investigators have revealed.
NTSB officials have given more details about the fateful moments before the hulking Cuauhtémoc Training Ship struck the iconic New York City landmark.
Their Monday press conference came as the second of the two Mexican sailors who died in the horrific collision on Saturday night was named as Adal Jair Marcos, 22.
Marcos, of Oaxaca, has been remembered by family as an avid traveler who had been on board the Cuauhtémoc for the past nine months of its world tour.
A childhood friend of Marcos told the Daily News he was 'a sincere and loyal friend, who always supports others in difficult times' and 'spread joy with his smile'.
Navy cadet América Yamilet Sánchez, 20, was previously identified as the other victim who died while terrified tourists watched from the docks.
Both Sánchez and Marcos were on the masts of the 160-foot-tall ship when it hit the bridge. The colossal impact caused them to fall to their deaths on the deck below.
Brian Young, who is leading the NTSB's investigation into the horror incident, described 'an engine failure' as a 'possible cause of the bridge strike'.
Responding to questions at a press conference on Monday, he said: 'The question pertains to a possible cause of the bridge strike... (it) possibly was an engine failure.
'We have an engineering group led by myself, and we will look at the status of the engine.
'We will look for any failures, we will look for engine inspections, and we'll talk to the crew about what may have possibly occurred with the engine.'
The ship was carrying 277 crew members, and 22 people were injured when it smashed into the Brooklyn Bridge at 8.25pm on Saturday night.
The NYPD previously said the Mexican Navy ship likely suffered a 'mechanical issue' before losing power.
Sánchez, from Xalapa, Mexico, shared a post on social media just eight hours before showing her enjoying a night out in the Big Apple on what would be her final day.
The naval academy engineering student shared a bright-eyed photograph of herself beaming on board the training ship, with the caption 'NY' alongside a red heart emoji.
Sánchez was known in her hometown as a talented swimmer who won several medals in the sport, according to local outlet E-Consulta Velacruz.

Young added that investigators are also looking into the tugboat which assisted the ship moving off the pier five minutes before the crash.
'As far as we know at this time, the tugboat had assisted the vessel moving off the pier,' he told the press conference.
'Part of our investigation will be to look into the tugboat's policies and procedures for the operation once helping the vessel get off the pier - what it's guidance would be and the job it would have to do.'
NTSB board member Michael Graham said that all information provided at the press conference was 'preliminary' as the investigation has only just begun.
He said investigators were currently 'gathering perishable evidence' from the scene.
'This is the start of a long process,' Graham told the conference.
'We will not be drawing any conclusions, we will not speculate, we will also not be determining the probable cause while we are on scene.'
Young also laid out the timeline for the exact moment the horror struck.
He said the boat arrived in New York City around noon on May 13. It docked portside at Pier 17 and remained there for three days, the investigator said.
The troubles began on Saturday, May 17, just five minutes after it left the dock at 8.20pm, as captains planned to navigate to Iceland.
Young said the ship had been intending to sail south down the East River before heading out to sea, but instead it careened towards the Brooklyn Bridge.
He said a radio broadcast requesting assistance from other tugboats in the area was transmitted at 8.24pm. This was followed up by two more requests for assistance.
The vessel came to a stop at 8.27pm, and the NYPD and FDNY emergency responders were on scene three minutes later, Young said.
Despite the speedy response, it was too late for the two young cadets who lost their lives on board the ship.
Most of the cadets who survived have since flown home to Mexico. Two people were still receiving treatment in hospital as of Monday afternoon.
Graham said the NTSB would release an official preliminary report in 30 days, but the full investigation would take at least a year.
He confirmed that the Brooklyn Bridge had not sustained any 'significant damage'.

EXCLUSIVE Diddy trial bombshell: DR PHIL spots stunning prosecution error and hidden 'poison' that everyone has missed... the judge now faces an agonizing decision

Just four weeks into the trial of Sean ' Diddy ' Combs and I want to prepare you for the possibility that these proceedings could come to a sudden, screeching halt. I spent most of my professional career around courtrooms as a consultant for trial attorneys, instructing them, not on the legal aspects of cases, but on the human elements, specifically how jurors responded to their arguments.

Truth over Nick Diaz's 'kidnapping' revealed as coach addresses claims UFC legend was drugged, flown to Mexico

Panicked UFC fans need not worry about Nick Diaz's reported kidnapping, drugging and involuntary commitment to a Mexican rehab facility: The 41-year-old MMA legend is just fine, according to his long-time coach. Cesar Gracie, who trained both Nick and his famous brother Nate during their UFC days, put a stop to the rumor mill on Instagram, where he posted a picture of the Stockton, California native putting in some work on the mat. 'Nick is healthy and well,' Gracie, a member of Brazilian jiu-jitsu's first family, wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of what looked like Diaz. 'Not cloned or kidnapped. Has not joined MS-13.' Fans had grown worried about the older Diaz brother after an Instagram user reported the bizarre claims days earlier. 'Nick has been forcibly taken by his cousin and transported across the border into Mexico, where he is confined in a rehabilitation facility against his will,' the since-deleted message began. 'He was drugged during this process and has made numerous attempts to escape, but the authorities consistently return him to the facility.' The unidentified Instagram user claimed Diaz's communication was 'severely restricted,' with all messages being relayed through someone named Ruben. Diaz hoped to return home to California, the user said, and wanted to know who had the power to keep him locked up at a drug rehab facility in Mexico. Nate Diaz poses with his brother Nick after his submission victory over Tony Ferguson in a welterweight fight during the UFC 279 event at T-Mobile Arena on September 10, 2022 As for the true identity of that Instagram user, that remains a bit of a mystery. The account features pictures of a woman alongside Diaz, who the user described as their 'love' in at least one post. But while this person may seem like Diaz's romantic interest, Gracie shot down that notion by writing that Diaz does 'not have a girlfriend but is probably looking.' Daily Mail has reached out to the person for comment. Further confusing the matter has been Diaz's own silence. This is just the latest bizarre story involving the older Diaz brother. In November, he took criticism from fans for selling personalized online messages through a company called Cameo, only for many to receive blank videos with static noise. 'A real scam, they sent me a three-second video with a black screen,' read a September 20 review. 'I spent 229 dollars on a three-second video with a black screen. Please, let no one else fall for this scam.' Diaz joined the platform in March 2022. While 54 percent of his reviews gave him five stars, 39 percent of his clients gave him the worst rating while 7 percent gave him two stars. In September 2015, Diaz was infamously handed a five-year ban from MMA after his post-fight drug test from UFC 138 came back with traces of marijuana metabolites. The Nevada State Athletic Commission also fined him $165,00 following a failed drug test from UFC 138. While Diaz lost to Anderson Silva at UFC 183, the result was later overturned after Silva's pre-fight drug test showed traces for drostanolone, which is an anabolic steroid. Following his appeal, the suspension and fine were reduced to 18 months and $100,000 in January 2016. However, Diaz would not fight again until 2021, losing to Robbie Lawler at UFC 266. Diaz holds a 26-10 MMA record with 13 knockouts and eight submissions as he gears up to face Vicente Luque at UFC 310 in December. The Stockton native's most notable run came between 2008 and 2011, winning 11 straight bouts. Following the win streak, he lost back-to-back title efforts against Carlos Condit and George St-Pierre before the infamous Silva fight. Nick is the older brother of Nate Diaz, another MMA legend who famously choked out Conor McGregor after stepping in on short notice at UFC 196 in 2016.

Body of missing girl, 15, pulled from NYC river alongside two other corpses

The body of a missing teenage girl was retrieved from New York City 's East River a week after she plunged into the water and never reemerged. Graceline Ilogene, 15, was pulled from the water on Friday afternoon - the same day two other bodies were also discovered in the 16-mile river. Tragedy struck on May 30 when Graceline was hanging out with her friend by the water on Roosevelt Island. She was sitting on the rocks by the river's edge when she plunged in. Some witnesses say she was dipping her feet in the water and slipped in, while others suggested she was trying to grab a lost item. Her friend had allegedly warned her to 'get out of the water, you know you can't swim,' a source told the New York Post. It is unclear what exactly led up to the moment Graceline, reportedly wearing a floral bathing suit, was swept away by the river's relentless current. Her panicked friend called 911 and alerted them Graceline had gone underwater and not returned, prompting authorities to swarm the scene. Fire department divers scoured the area roughly 50 feet north of the Roosevelt Island Bridge, where investigators believe the girl entered the water. After failing to locate anyone, the FDNY turned over jurisdiction to the NYPD, which continued the search using harbor units, drones, and helicopters, according to both departments and witnesses. A pair of Graceline's white sneakers, books and a handbag were reportedly left behind at the eerie scene. Her distraught friend was seen sitting against the railing as the chaotic search unfolded. The current was rapidly moving the day she went missing, and the NYPD was forced to call off the search after a few hours due to disruptive weather conditions, CBS reported. But authorities continued to search the area in the following days, and Graceline was ultimately found. She was then rushed to an NYPD Harbor Unit in Brooklyn and pronounced dead. Her neighbors previously told the Post she lived on the Upper West Side with her mother, with whom she had a close relationship. 'They were very quiet. It's sad,' Edward Davis, who lived near the teen and her mother, told the outlet about Graceline's untimely death. Another neighbor said the girl seemed shy and was often working with her mom. Before Graceline's corpse was discovered, a man's dead body was reported floating near the Brooklyn Bridge in the East River. The unidentified corpse was pulled from the water at around 6am on Friday. Later in the day, another unidentified man was also pronounced dead after being pulled from the river at around 7pm. Graceline's death is under investigation, and authorities believe it was an accident. A medical examiner will determine her official cause of death. These harrowing incidents come as a Staten Island teenager leaped to his death off the side of the Staten Island Ferry after leaving a haunting final message to his family. Brandon Pino, 17, of Staten Island, was spotted jumping off the busy ferry around 9:45am on May 31 as the boat was approaching Whitehall Terminal in Manhattan. A witness told the ferry crew about the teen's leap after it docked in Manhattan. The Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School senior had visited his uncle around 7am before taking the 9:30am ferry from St. George Ferry Terminal to Manhattan, his sister, Cathleen Pino, 27, told The New York Daily News. Brandon posted on Instagram, announcing to his followers that it was 'my last day on earth,' before he jumped off the boat. 'And then he also made a post about mental health awareness. Hashtag mental health awareness,' the distraught sister said. The young teen was also texting a group of friends before hurdling overboard, worrying them. 'In one of those messages he wishes his friends a farewell, telling them to stay true to themselves and that he loves them,' Cathleen said. 'And then he sent a picture that he was on the ferry, on the outer part of the ferry, looking towards the water.' The family is hoping to find Brandon's body to allow his mother to have a proper burial for her son. 'We want help to see if there can be more attention, so to see if they can actually do at least a recovery, for my mom to get some type of closure,' she shared.
