Ancient rocks tie Roman Empire's collapse to a mini ice age
Exactly what caused the collapse of the mighty Roman Empire has been hotly debated practically since the fall itself. Was economic stagnation primarily to blame, or was it societal decay? Did political conflicts mortally weaken Rome's power, or is its decline owed mostly to a series of invasions from abroad? Was it lead?
In reality, the fall of the empire almost certainly occurred through a complex interplay of socio-political factors—but recent research suggests a brief climate crisis may have contributed more than we thought. The new findings were published on April 11 in the journal Geology by a collaborative team from Queen's University Canada, the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing.
Previous analysis indicates that Earth endured a roughly 200–300 year long ice age starting around 540 CE. Scientists believe that powerful volcanic eruptions that hurled massive amounts of ash and debris into the planet's atmosphere lowered global temperatures and reduced sunlight. While it was not as intense as other major ice ages, some researchers have argued that this geologic era helped usher in the final days of Rome. Others, meanwhile, contend that the Late Antique Little Ice Age simply coincided with imperial decline.
New evidence supporting the former argument comes from oddly out-of-place rocks collected not from modern areas of the ancient Roman empire, but from Iceland. Although the region is known primarily for its basalt, researchers recently determined certain samples contained miniscule crystals of the mineral zircon.
'Zircons are essentially time capsules that preserve vital information including when they crystallised as well as their compositional characteristics,' said Christopher Spencer, an associate professor at Queen's University and study's lead author. 'The combination of age and chemical composition allows us to fingerprint currently exposed regions of the Earth's surface, much like is done in forensics.'
After crushing the rocks and separating out the zircon crystals, Spencer and colleagues determined the minerals spanned three billion years of geologic history that trace specifically back to Greenland.
'The fact that the rocks come from nearly all geological regions of Greenland provides evidence of their glacial origins,' said Tom Gernon, a study co-author and a professor of Earth Science at the University of Southampton. 'As glaciers move, they erode the landscape, breaking up rocks from different areas and carrying them along, creating a chaotic and diverse mixture—some of which ends up stuck inside the ice.'
The team argues that the zircon-rich ice could only have formed and drifted hundreds of miles away due to the Late Antique Little Ice Age. According to Gernon, this timing also lines up with a known period of ice-rafting, in which large slabs of ice break off glaciers, drift across the ocean, and subsequently melt to scatter its debris on foreign shores.
Although the team obviously can't tie zircon minerals to the Roman Empire's collapse, their lengthy migration inside frozen chunks of glacier further underscore the 6th century ice age's severity. Knowing this, it's easy to see how the chillier era's effects on crops, civil unrest, and mass migrations could further weaken an already shaky Rome.
'When it comes to the fall of the Roman Empire, this climate shift may have been the straw that broke the camel's back,' said Gernon.

In 2023, metal detector enthusiasts scouring Norway's remote Senja Island stumbled across a remarkable archeological find. While searching near a rural road, they noticed a pair of partially exposed bronze brooches sticking out from the dirt. The trove dates to around 900–950 CE, and features numerous artifacts in the roughly 18-foot-long burial vessel. Apart from the skeletal remains and ornate bronze brooches, these include agricultural tools, what appears to be a weaving sword made from whale bone, and a spindle whorl indicative of her domestic responsibilities. 'We believe the woman buried here held significant status locally, and perhaps even across the region,' said Niemi. 'She wasn't at the very top of the social ladder, but she was clearly an important figure.' The region where the grave was discovered is particularly well-suited for preserving ancient bodies and archeological items. Accompanying metal artifacts help prevent bacterial growth, while the soil's rich lime and shell sand contents aid in conserving skeletal material. There are signs indicating that more Vikings (and possibly their pets) are buried nearby. In the course of their excavation work, Niemi's team found another brooch located multiple feet beyond the main grave. This suggests other graves may be present. Experts plan to conduct a more expansive survey of the area using ground-penetrating radar and other tools to see if anything else awaits discovery.

Is it true that … cold water plunges boost immunity?
'It's a long-held belief that taking to the waters is good for your health,' says Mike Tipton, a professor of human and applied physiology at the University of Portsmouth. From Roman frigidariums to Thomas Jefferson's foot baths, cold immersion has long been seen as curative. But does modern science support the idea that it boosts immunity? The answer: it's complicated. While cold water immersion does activate the body, that's not the same as strengthening the immune system. 'When you immerse yourself in cold water, your body undergoes the cold shock response,' says Tipton. 'You get rapid breathing, a spike in heart rate and a surge of stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol.' This may explain why people feel more alert or energised after a cold dip. But does it mean you're less likely to get sick? Many studies into the effects focus on immune cell activity in the blood – which can increase after cold exposure – but that doesn't always translate into fewer infections. 'It's easy to cherry-pick results,' says Tipton. He points to a frequently quoted Dutch study in which people who ended their daily hot showers with at least 30 seconds under cold water took 29% fewer sick days. While it's often used as an example of the powers of cold plunges, those participants actually reported the same number of infections as those who didn't have a cold shower. 'That might reflect increased resilience or just a willingness to push through because of being part of a study,' says Tipton, rather than better immunity. It may also be that regular cold plungers simply have a healthier lifestyle overall. A recent study by Tipton's team found that indoor and outdoor swimmers had fewer respiratory infections than non-swimmers, suggesting it may be the exercise, not the cold, doing the work. One thing is clear: too much cold is harmful. 'If your core temperature drops too far, it can suppress the immune system,' he says. His advice? Keep it short – no more than 90 seconds.

New Utah exhibit offers unique prospective on mammoth, other aspects of the ice age
Timothy Lee and other Natural History Museum of Utah staff closely watched as the race for Utah's NHL team name unfolded — with a vested interest in one particular candidate. Their hopes for the Mammoth then strengthened as the field narrowed to the final three at the start of this year. 'Once that happened and we saw that momentum, we were all crossing our fingers and hoping that Mammoth would be chosen,' said Lee, the museum's director of exhibits. Mammoth made sense, given the species' long ties to Utah. And not only is there a massive adult Columbian mammoth replica on display at the museum, but Lee was hard at work preparing for the museum's newest exhibit, "Mysteries of the Ice Ages." It's an exhibit that features mammoths, among other things. The museum's marketing team had even started placing tiny mammoth figurines throughout the building as a clue for visitors to guess what the facility's next exhibit would be, months before the final announcement was made. So when the hockey club's announcement came down last month, museum staff were elated. 'We are hopeful that we can make connections and share stories of natural history, Utah's amazing geologic history, and showcase science and what makes Utah so amazing,' he told on Friday, standing a few feet from a display explaining the differences between mammoths and modern-day elephants. 'It's going to be a global brand, so we're really excited about the opportunity,' Lee added. 'Mysteries of the Ice Ages,' which opens to visitors on the third floor on Saturday, offers plenty of information about mammoths. It also provides many relevant ties beyond the state's new prehistoric mascot. It's a traveling exhibit with over 120 items on loan from the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa, Canada. It features fossils and replicas of the animals that roamed the earth as far back as 80,000 years ago, such as muskoxen, caribou, wolves, cave bears and mastodon, the mammoth's prehistoric cousin. There are also displays and artifacts from Neanderthals and early humans, explaining how they adapted to the cold. A handful of interactive options also demonstrate how the last ice age formed and ultimately shaped geography across the world, which is especially relevant in Utah. Earth, Lee explained, is still technically in an ice age because of the ice that exists on its two poles, and the exhibit explores the potential impacts as those recede. It ends with climate solutions and hope for the future, tying into another exhibit that the Natural History Museum of Utah opened in 2023. Having ties to exhibits on other floors of the building — like 'Past Worlds' and 'A Climate of Hope' — is ultimately why Lee booked this new exhibit two years ago, long before Utah even had an NHL team. However, hosting a traveling exhibit from another country hasn't come without some unexpected challenges. A few of the artifacts, including some taxidermy animals and ancient tools made of ivory, have yet to arrive. Those are expected to be installed in the coming weeks as the museum clears international regulations. The exhibit will remain at the museum through Jan. 4, 2026, before another traveling exhibit takes its place. That gives Utahns plenty of time to learn more about the state's newest mascot, as well as other aspects of the ice age that make Utah what it is today. That's ultimately what museum curators hope visitors will take away from the new exhibit. They believe that it could provide a new perspective on how the cold made the state into what it is now. 'The cold is so much of our culture today that we have something to protect,' Lee said. 'I hope they leave with an enjoyment of everything that Utah has to offer: an understanding that ice and cold shaped Utah.'
