ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - The Kurdish-led administration in northeast Syria (Rojava) announced on Wednesday the handover of four individuals affiliated with the Islamic State (ISIS) to a visiting UK delegation, during a meeting that also emphasized continued British support.
'One British woman and three children affiliated with ISIS families were handed over in accordance with an official handover document signed by representatives of both the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) and the United Kingdom,' the Kurdish-led administration said in a statement.
DAANES stated it would continue cooperating with the UK and all countries that have citizens and children in areas under its jurisdiction, particularly concerning the repatriation of ISIS-linked individuals.
The UK delegation was led by Mary Shockledge, head of the Syria office at the British Embassy in Beirut, and was received by Fanar al-Kaeet, co-chair of the DAANES Department of Foreign Relations.
Thousands of people with suspected ties to ISIS are currently held in the al-Hol and Roj camps in Hasaka province. The camps are held by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - the force that spearheaded the fight against ISIS in Syria.
Al-Hol is the larger of the two, currently housing 34,927 individuals linked to ISIS. These include 15,861 Syrians, 15,681 Iraqis, and 6,385 third-country nationals, according to official data obtained by Rudaw English from the camps' supervisor.
The UK delegation also reaffirmed London's commitment to the 'long-term defeat of ISIS' through continued coordination with the US-led coalition, as well as ongoing humanitarian support.
'The UK remains at the forefront of humanitarian response efforts, with extensive humanitarian programs aimed at mitigating protection risks to civilians, improving conditions in camps, and building resilience,' the statement said.
'The UK will continue working with both the new Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to support an inclusive political process,' it added, quoting Shockledge, who also welcomed the recent political agreement between the SDF and Syria's interim government.
On March 10, Syria's interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa and SDF commander Mazloum Abdi signed a political agreement aimed at integrating the SDF into the Syrian state apparatus. The deal includes formal recognition of the Kurdish population as a core component of Syria, a nationwide ceasefire, and the return of displaced persons to their homes.
In a further sign of shifting UK policy toward Syria, the UK Treasury in early March lifted sanctions on Syria's central bank and 23 other banking, commercial, and oil entities whose assets had been frozen for six years. It also pledged £200 million to provide food, healthcare, and education in Syria.
'We will continue to do all we can to help those in need,' Shockledge said, according to the statement.

Al-Sudani's visit to Al-Anbar: Political and developmental messages

Shafaq News/ Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani paid a visit to Al-Anbar province, in what political observers and local sources described as a gesture loaded with messages of support, balance, and national development. Al-Sudani arrived in Al-Anbar earlier on Sunday, where he met with several tribal leaders at the start of his tour. Although not part of an official government agenda, the visit was closely watched by political actors in the province. Sources from Al-Anbar told Shafaq News that the visit had been planned for over a month but was postponed due to a prior trip by a senior figure within the Coordination Framework, the leader of the Wisdom Movement (Al-HiKma) Ammar al-Hakim. The delay aimed to avoid framing the prime minister's visit as politically or electorally motivated. One source stated that the meeting with tribal sheikhs was intended as a 'friendly and direct' interaction, signaling support for local efforts to maintain stability and prevent Al-Anbar from becoming aligned with any single political faction. 'This is about preserving balance—particularly ahead of elections on November,' the source noted. Separately, a member of Al-Anbar's Provincial Council told Shafaq News that the visit did not adhere to formal institutional procedures. 'The provincial flag was not raised during the visit, which indicates that it was not part of coordinated efforts with the council,' the official said. Moreover, the prime minister's decision to meet with figures known for their public criticism of the local government—such as Hamid al-Hayis and Arkan al-Tarmouz—was interpreted as a sign of his intention to recalibrate political dynamics within the province. Both men have recently directed sharp criticisms and direct appeals to the prime minister regarding the performance of Al-Anbar's local administration. 'The meetings seem to align with their recent statements, and the move has sparked questions among local observers, particularly due to the exclusion of elected bodies from the visit,' the source added. Al-Sudani's visit—though unofficial—comes at a pivotal time for Al-Anbar, one of Iraq's most strategically important provinces. With 15 parliamentary seats, Al-Anbar is a Sunni-majority region that plays a key role in shaping national politics. In the 2021 elections, the Taqadum Alliance, led by former Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, secured a dominant position with 11 seats. Notably, however, two seats were won by independents. This independent presence may offer potential avenues for cooperation, especially as the Iraqi Prime Minister has not, to date, aligned himself with any specific political alliance in the province.

UK to boost ‘homegrown talent' in new AI skills drive

London – UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday pledged to boost 'homegrown talent for the AI age' by teaming up with tech giants to train 7.5 million workers in artificial intelligence skills. Speaking at the start of London's Tech Week, with a line-up of speakers including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Starmer said: 'In this global race, we can be an AI maker and not an AI taker.' Starmer was due to have a one-on-one conversation with the chief of the star Silicon Valley semiconductor firm whose chips are critical for artificial intelligence applications and research. Ahead of the event bringing together industry giants, Starmer announced a government-industry partnership to train 7.5 million workers in AI skills, including in using chatbots and large language models to boost productivity. Tech firms including Nvidia, Google, Microsoft and Amazon committed to make training materials freely available to businesses over the next five years. Google EMEA region President Debbie Weinstein called it a 'crucial initiative' essential for developing AI skills, unlocking AI-powered growth 'and cementing the UK's position as an AI leader'. In his opening speech, Starmer said Britain must build 'the digital infrastructure that we need to make sure AI improves our public services'. The UK has a 'responsibility' to 'harness this unprecedented opportunity and to use it to improve the lives of working people', Starmer added. 'We are going to build more homes, more labs, more data centres, and we're going to do it much, much more quickly.' – Economic growth – His government has pledged to fire up the UK's flagging economy, including with 'pro-growth' AI regulations to attract tech investment and turn Britain into an 'AI superpower'. 'We are putting the power of AI into the hands of the next generation — so they can shape the future, not be shaped by it,' Starmer said in a press release before the event. The British leader unveiled £187 million ($253 million) in funding to help develop tech abilities including training for one million secondary school students, as part of its 'TechFirst' programme. He called it a 'step change in how we train homegrown talent for the AI age'. The investment will 'embed AI right through our education system', he said, announcing nearly £150 million in undergraduate and PhD research scholarships in AI and tech. Starmer also announced a 'commitment from Nvidia to partner on a new AI talent pipeline', including through expanding a Nvidia lab in Bristol, southwest England. The UK's AI sector is valued at £72 billion, employing over 64,000 people, and is projected to exceed £800 billion by 2035. It was growing 30 times faster than the rest of the economy, according to government figures from 2023 — an 'incredible' rate, according to Starmer. Other speakers at the tech conference include the CEO of Mistral AI, Arthur Mensch, the UK's Science Secretary Peter Kyle and Markus Villig, founder of ride-hailing app Bolt.

UN Ocean Conference: Iraqi President urges global climate, water action

Shafaq News/ On Monday, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid called for urgent global action on climate and water security during his speech at the UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3), held June 9–13 in Nice, France. Rashid arrived in France on Sunday with First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, Deputy Prime Minister Fuad Hussein, and senior officials for the summit, co-hosted by France and Costa Rica. At the high-level session, Rashid warned that Iraq faces a 'severe and growing water crisis ' fueled by climate change and poor cross-border water management, blaming shrinking flows from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers for decimating agriculture and triggering internal displacement. He reaffirmed Iraq's commitment to multilateral efforts against climate threats, stressing that worsening water shortages are deepening food insecurity and economic hardship nationwide. — رئاسة جمهورية العراق (@IraqiPresidency) June 9, 2025 Framing ocean degradation as a security challenge, Rashid urged an integrated global response. 'Oceans and seas are more than natural wonders; they are complex ecosystems that stabilize our climate, support food security, generate livelihoods, and regulate the Earth's water cycle.' The Iraqi President outlined key priorities: increasing sustainable ocean investment, restoring marine ecosystems, expanding hydrological and oceanic mapping, closing legal loopholes in high seas governance, and securing fair water-sharing deals. He also pressed for implementation of the High Seas Treaty and the inclusion of water and climate strategies in national development plans—especially in vulnerable nations. 'Together, let us unite with purpose and determination to protect our oceans and secure a sustainable, equitable future for all who depend on them.'
