WTC Final: Temba Bavuma harboured dreams of playing at Lord's as youngster; to lead Proteas against Australia
South Africa's Temba Bavuma (AP/PTI)
South Africa Test captain
Temba Bavuma
, the first Black cricketer to lead his country in Test cricket, shared his journey from playing cricket in the streets of Langa to leading his team at Lord's in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship final against Australia on June 11.
South Africa last faced Australia in a Test series in 2022-23, where Australia won 2-0.
Bavuma, now 35, recalled his childhood connection to Lord's cricket ground, drawing parallels between the streets of his hometown and famous cricket venues.

"There was always some sort of allegiance with Lord's when we were growing up in Langa. On the right-hand side of the street the tar wasn't done so nicely and we used to call it Karachi. The other side was the
MCG
.
But my favourite section was clean and done up nicely, and we called it Lord's because it just looked better. As a kid of 10, I already had that dream of playing at Lord's," Bavuma told The Guardian.
His journey included earning a scholarship to SACS, where he faced challenges adapting to a predominantly white institution.
"It was tough integrating within the system, learning and understanding the (white) culture," he said of his time at SACS. "But I had to learn about discipline and etiquette. I also had to learn confidence. Can you imagine taking a child from the township into a system where, basically, everything is there? There were always doubts. Am I good enough to be here?"

Bavuma remembered the stark differences when SACS played against Langa. "My friends from Langa would have huge plates at lunch. We'd laugh about it but… the Langa boy would be wondering when is he going to get another opportunity to eat food like that?"
His cricket career progressed after moving to Johannesburg and attending St David's, which has since named its cricket ground after him.

Bavuma achieved a significant milestone in 2016 by becoming the first Black South African to score a Test century. His second century came in 2023 after becoming Test captain.
Quiz:
Who's that IPL player?
"The added responsibility, getting pushed up the order, is something I thrived on," Bavuma said. "Most of all, I just understand my game and I don't try playing like anyone else."
Under his leadership, South Africa secured their place in the World Test Championship final by winning seven consecutive Tests, despite challenges including scheduling inequality, player unavailability, and funding constraints.
The ICC World Test Championship final between South Africa and Australia is scheduled to begin on June 11 at Lord's Cricket Ground.

"It's extremely challenging tour to crack" - Stephen Curry Eyes New Career Options After NBA; Golden State Warriors Star Plans Next Move
Stephen Curry and Ayesha Curry (Image credit: Ayesha Curry/Instagram) Stephen Curry still has plenty left to give in the NBA, but the Golden State Warriors star already has his sights set on a potential second career once his basketball days are over. Stephen Curry continues to dominate the NBA despite playoff exit At 37 years old, Curry continues to perform at an elite level. This season, he averaged 24.5 points, 6.0 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game while shooting 44.8% from the field and 39.7% from three-point range. Despite his strong individual play, the Golden State Warriors fell short of their ultimate goal—winning an eighth franchise championship—after Curry missed most of their second-round playoff series against the Minnesota Timberwolves due to a Grade 1 hamstring strain. Retirement isn't on the table yet, but Curry has already hinted at what might come next. Stephen Curry eyes professional golf after NBA career In a recent interview with CNBC's Alex Sherman, Stephen Curry revealed that he may attempt a professional golf career once he steps away from basketball. "That would be a fun goal to go after for sure," Curry said. "It's an extremely challenging tour to crack if you're not one of the champion ex-PGA guys that are making that jump after you turn 50. So to do all the qualifying journey and all that—I'm pretty sure I'll try it. I've seen guys who are preparing themselves to do the same thing." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo Though Curry is best known for his basketball prowess, he has already made a name for himself in golf. He has competed in the American Century Championship, a celebrity golf tournament, securing two top-five finishes—including a win in 2023. Stephen Curry's basketball IQ could translate to golf success Given Curry's ability to perform under pressure and his tactical approach to the game, a transition to professional golf isn't far-fetched. His precision and mental discipline on the basketball court could serve him well on the greens. But before he considers a career change, Curry remains focused on adding a fifth NBA championship to his resume. Golden State Warriors may need another star to contend next season The midseason addition of Jimmy Butler gave the Warriors a major boost, but the team might still need one more impact player in free agency to maximize Curry's championship window. If Golden State can secure another game-changing talent, Curry could have the support he needs to make another deep playoff run in 2025-26. Franck Ribéry responds to Cristiano Ronaldo's Champions League Ballon d'Or comments
Cristiano Ronaldo links Ballon d'Or to Champions League performance Cristiano Ronaldo stated in a press conference ahead of the Nations League final between Portugal and Spain that the Ballon d'Or should be awarded to the player who wins and stands out in the UEFA Champions League . The forward, who has previously won the Ballon d'Or five times, made the comments when asked about the upcoming edition of the award, which will be presented on September 22. According to Ronaldo, performance in the Champions League remains the most important factor when determining the Ballon d'Or recipient. "The one who should win is the one who stands out and wins the Champions League," he said. Ronaldo's remarks come as speculation builds around potential Ballon d'Or contenders following the conclusion of the European club season. The UEFA Champions League, widely considered the most prestigious club competition, is often used as a benchmark for individual accolades such as the Ballon d'Or. The post included a pointed question: 'So you need to win the Champions League to win the Ballon d'Or ?' Ribéry's reaction appears to reference the 2013 Ballon d'Or, where he was considered a top contender after a standout season with Bayern Munich. That year, Ribéry played a key role in helping the German club secure a historic treble—winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and the UEFA Champions League. Bayern Munich also added the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup to its trophy haul. Live Events Despite his contributions, the 2013 Ballon d'Or was awarded to Cristiano Ronaldo. The decision drew criticism at the time, particularly since Ronaldo did not win any major team titles that year. In 2013, Ribéry received several individual honors, including the French Footballer of the Year, Bundesliga Player of the Year, UEFA Best Player in Europe, and the Club World Cup Ballon d'Or. He also led the Bundesliga in assists and was named to both the Bundesliga and UEFA Teams of the Year. Ribéry's recent social media post revives the long-standing debate over the criteria used to award the Ballon d'Or. The ongoing conversation reflects broader questions about the balance between individual performance and team success in global football recognition.
