Child actress Sophie Nyweide dead at 24, police investigating 'untimely death'

Fox News23-04-2025

Sophie Nyweide, a child actress known for her roles in "Law & Order," "Noah," and "Mammoth," has died. She was 24.
According to the Bennington Police Department in Vermont, law enforcement was dispatched to a wooded area along the banks of the Roaring Branch River on April 14 after receiving a report of an unresponsive female. First responders arrived at the scene and attempted life-saving measures. However, Nyweide was pronounced dead around 5 a.m.
Bennington Police told Fox News Digital that an investigation has been opened due to the "untimely death."
An individual was present with Nyweide at the time of her death, police said, and they are cooperating with investigators. Investigators suspect a possible unintentional overdose, but "as with any untimely death, Bennington Police Bureau of Criminal Investigations (BCI) will conduct a thorough and compressive investigation leading up to, as well as the cause of, Nyweide's death."
Authorities noted that the "investigation remains open."
According to her death certificate, Nyweide was pregnant at the time of her death, People magazine reported. It is unclear how far along she was.
Nyweide mom, Shelly Gibson — a former actress who starred in various television shows, including "All My Children" and "St. Elsewhere" — paid tribute to her late daughter on social media.
"RIP, my Sophie," she wrote on Instagram. "She graced us for far too short a time. My daughter was a light for all who met her. For those us of who were truly close with Sophie, we are gutted and will need a long time to get over her passing. I know I never will. God I love my daughter. I want her back. Fly high sweetheart - you always could."
According to Nyweide's obituary, the former actress "was a beloved daughter, granddaughter, sister, friend and new aunt," the family wrote. "Creative, athletic and wise beyond her years, Sophie accomplished so much in the time she danced upon earth (literally - she danced as she moved!)."
The family wrote that Nyweide "seemed happiest on a movie set, becoming someone else."
"It was a safe place for her and she relished from the casts and crews who nourished her talent and her well being," the family wrote. "She was an eager adventurer and picked up the customs and even languages of any place she visited."
"She wrote and drew voraciously and much of this art depicts the depth she had and it also represents the pain she suffered. Many of her writings and artwork are roadmaps of her struggles and traumas," the obit continued. "Even with those roadmaps, diagnoses, and her own revelations, those closest to her, plus therapists, law enforcement officers and others who tried to help her are heartbroken their efforts couldn't save her from her fate."
"She dreamed (more like demanded!) to be an actor, without ever knowing her mother was an actor, so she did that too with an ease we all marveled about," the family added, per the obit.

Arraignment of accused SoHo crypto kidnappers takes on feel of mini trial. Here's what happened.

Grand jury indictments were unsealed Wednesday for the two men accused in the Lower Manhattan cryptocurrency and torture case. But what happened in court was far from your run-of-the-mill arraignment, CBS News New York's Doug Williams reported. Arraignment turns into something else entirely John Woeltz and William Duplessie pleaded not guilty together in court. Each have been indicted by a grand jury and charged with the kidnap and torture of a man from Italy last month inside a SoHo apartment, allegedly over crypto funds and passkeys. The judge started by telling both sides to explain the case. The defense then had the opportunity to defend its client in what played out almost like a mini trial. The prosecution argued against bail, saying the alleged victim's testimony not only led to a grand jury indictment, but his story and his injuries corroborated the findings of police. Among other things, prosecutors allege that while the victim was abducted, he was shocked with electric wires and his leg was cut with a saw. Investigators found body armor, night vision goggles, ammunition and t-shirts with a photo of a gun held to the victim's head in the apartment. Duplessie's attorney, Sanford Talkin, told the the judge, "The narrative about the victim being confined and tortured is completely false." The defense claims to have surveillance video of the alleged victim under no duress or supervision, including, most notably, one they say shows him smoking a cigarette by himself on the street 36 hours prior to his alleged escape. Prosecutors responded by showing the judge a photo, which reporters could not see. However, Assistant District Attorney Sarah Khan said it depicted the victim having been "set on fire." Shortly thereafter, the judge said he'd heard enough. Defense attorneys argued for $1 million bail, ankle bracelets, and parental supervision, but all of that was denied by the judge, for now. Everyone will be back in court on July 15 to potentially revisit the requests.

Trump to attend 'Les Misérables' premiere as protests persist across the country

President Donald Trump is set to attend the opening night of 'Les Misérables,' a musical set against a background of revolution and protest, at Washington, D.C.'s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday. 'I love the songs, I love the play,' Trump told Fox News Digital last week. 'I think it's great.' The opening night of a monthlong run of the Tony Award-winning show comes amid widespread protests against the president's immigration policies and his decision to deploy members of the military in response. Protesting against power is a major theme in the show, which is centered around student-led demonstrations against the French monarchy. 'Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, the musical tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice, and redemption — a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit,' reads the official summary on the Kennedy Center's website. Songs from the musical have been used in protests against governments around the world since the show debuted in 1980, including by pro-democracy demonstrators in Hong Kong in 2019. Protesters sang one of the show's most popular and recognizable hits, 'Do You Hear the People Sing?' which includes the lyrics, 'Do you hear the people sing? Singing a song of angry men?' The show will be the first production Trump has attended as head of the Kennedy Center. He did not attend any performances during his first term in office, and in February he replaced the entire board of trustees and had himself named chairman of the board. The shake-up resulted in some concerts being canceled — including a performance by the Gay Men's Chorus in honor of Pride Month — and other artists and productions pulling out of planned shows to protest the changes, including actor Issa Rae and a production of 'Hamilton.' 'Our show simply cannot, in good conscience, participate and be a part of this new culture that is being imposed on the Kennedy Center,' 'Hamilton' producer Jeffrey Seller said in a statement in March. A spokesperson for "Les Miz" said Wednesday, 'We are looking forward to performing for DC audiences beginning tonight and throughout the engagement at the Kennedy Center, where the US first saw the original production in 1986.' The performance Wednesday is serving as a fundraiser for the Kennedy Center. First lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, are expected to attend as well. Security will be tightened around the venue for the performance, the Kennedy Center said. 'Please be advised the Kennedy Center will be closed to non-ticket holders on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, due to enhanced security protocols,' the venue's website said.
