Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa unveils the Royal Huakai Suite
The Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa recently debuted the new Royal Huakai Suite, as part of its $60 million renovation.
Spread over nearly 2,500 feet, the Royal Huakai Suite is a one-bedroom, two-bathroom accommodation overlooking Keauhou Bay. The spacious living space has a kitchenette, three lanais, office space and a spa-inspired bathroom with a soaking tub.
"Huakai in Hawaiian means trip, voyage or journey, and we chose it to reflect the deep history of exploration in this area while also welcoming our guests as they begin their journey with us," said Nani Kupihe, director of cultural experiences at the Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa. "The Royal Huakai Suite is the perfect name for this room because it celebrates how close we are to the birthplace of King Kamehameha III and honors the voyaging heritage of Keauhou Bay."
Royal Huakai Suite guests also receive access to the enhanced Voyager 47 Club Lounge, which offers coffee and breakfast in the mornings and appetizers and alcoholic beverages in the evening.

As expansion continues, summer drivers to see new looks at Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel
As the summer travel season picks up, visitors will have a much different view — and some different routes — at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel as a result of the ongoing expansion project. Traffic counts at the primary route between the Peninsula and South Hampton Roads have grown steadily ever since it opened in the 1950s. In 2011, for example, the state transportation department reported that on a daily basis, more than 44,000 vehicles used the artery each way, and projected that number to rise to about 56,000 by 2040. Last year, according to the department, roughly 100,000 vehicles used it daily during the tourism season, which begins on Memorial Day weekend. As the $4 billion project continues this summer, there will three primary traffic shifts that motorists will see, the two biggest of which will come in August. Early that month, motorists heading west on Interstate 64 between Willoughby Spit and the South Island and will be moved onto a temporary bridge to allow crews to demolish the existing bridge and continue construction of the new portion of the bridge, according to Ryan Banas, project director for the HRBT Expansion Project. In late August, eastbound I-64 traffic from the South Island to Willoughby Spit will be shifted onto the new eight-lane bridge which will allow for the demolition of portions of the existing eastbound structure and continue. However, only two of the future eight lanes will be open to traffic, Banas said. 'We'll only have two new lanes up there, it ultimately has the capacity for eight, but in our current staging of construction we're only going to have two new lanes up on that bridge,' Banas said. 'No additional capacity across the harbor until substantial completion, which for us is February 2027.' However, he added, opening this portion of the bridge to traffic will offer a great deal of shoulder width which will allow for easier management of incidents such as accidents and breakdowns — and therefore lessen congestion. 'By having those shoulders it allows us to get them out of an active lane and keep traffic moving through on the existing lanes that we have,' Banas said. 'I do think that will be very helpful for us in high volume situations where we don't have to worry about someone breaking down because they've been sitting in traffic because of congestion, and then that breakdown can just lead to even more exacerbated delays.' Starting around the end of this month, motorists on I-64 from Willoughby Spit down to Patrol Road will shift from the left edge of the eastbound roadway to the right edge, now only newly widened pavement, to allow crews to do more construction work in the median. As for the project's main feature, the new tunnels, the enormous tunnel drilling machine doing the bulk of the heavy lifting for the HRBT project, has completed 65% of the way through her second tunnel as of Friday. FAA to restrict Newark flights through December following outage turmoil
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Friday announced it will restrict the number of arrivals and departures through the end of the year at the embattled Newark Liberty International Airport. As the airport continues to experience outages and staffing shortages, the FAA said it would limit the number of arrivals and departures at the busy airport to 34 on weekdays from Sept. 1 through Oct. 25 and 28 per hour from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31 on weekends. 'The confirmed reduced rates will maintain safety while alleviating excessive flight delays at the airport due to staffing and equipment challenges,' the agency wrote in their order. 'The early completion of runway construction at the airport that added to the delays will also contribute to a more efficient operation.' The runway 4-Left/22-Right, which has been shut down since mid-April for repair, was reopened this week — about a week ahead of schedule. Before the construction was done, the FAA reduced the number of arrivals and departures at the airport to 28 per hour. The airport, one of the largest to service the New York City area, has been embroiled in turmoil with staffing shortages, ongoing construction, communication issues and outdated technology. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unveiled a proposal in late May to modernize the technology and support the recruitment and retention of more air traffic controllers. He said at least 16 workers were already placed in training to eventually aid the staff as air traffic controllers. He also teased a new fiber line being developed by Verizon between Philadelphia and New York that would help with communication lapses. 'I don't want to over promise and under deliver, but if everything goes well, and there can be problems when you test the line, but if it all goes well, we should be able to turn over to this new fiber line at the start of July,' Duffy added.
