Marcos postpones rehab of Manila's major circle road for a month

MANILA: President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Sunday (June 1) announced the postponement of the rehabilitation of the Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (Edsa), Manila's main thoroughfare, for a month.
This was confirmed by Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon during the launch of the Pamilya Pasa promo.
'He said 'Go back to the drawing board' because he has listened to the concerns of the residents of Metro Manila,' Dizon told reporters.
'And he has also listened to experts who have informed him that there are more effective ways and new technologies that we can do faster,' Dizon added.
The project, or what the government deemed as Edsa rebuild, was originally set to start mid-June. However, Dizon said that the president instructed them to revamp their plan within a month. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN

AirAsia's digital platform ordered to halt airline ticket sales in Manila

KUALA LUMPUR: The Philippines has ordered AirAsia's digital platform, AirAsia Move, to cease all airline ticket sales in the country following complaints that it was charging illegally high fares. reported that the Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) issued a cease-and-desist order against the platform, with Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announcing on Sunday that police had been instructed to take down its website. The move came after reports surfaced of exorbitant ticket prices during recent transport disruptions in Tacloban City. According to the Philippines' Transportation Department, a one-way ticket from Manila to Tacloban listed on AirAsia Move costs as much as 77,000 pesos (about RM6,300), nearly three times the price offered by Philippine Airlines for the same route. "The government will not tolerate these abusive practices. We will use the full force of the law against unscrupulous online platforms exploiting the public," Dizon was quoted as saying in a press conference. He said the authorities were preparing to file a case of criminal economic sabotage against the platform, which is owned by Capital A Berhad and affiliated with budget airline Philippines AirAsia. The CAB, which regulates airfare pricing in the country, noted that the excessive fares appeared to take advantage of limited transport options in Tacloban after a key bridge closure disrupted trucking routes.

Cambodia demands Thais investigate border shooting, slated to take border dispute to ICJ

A 48-year-old Cambodian soldier was shot dead in a brief exchange of fire on May 28. - Supplied via PPP/ANN PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian government plan to bring its border dispute with Thailand to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) has garnered support from the former prime minister and the general public, while the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has demanded that Thailand investigate the May 28 shooting that killed a Cambodian soldier, describing it as a 'cruel and illegal act'. On Monday night (June 1), Prime Minister Hun Manet announced on social media that Cambodia will take the border issue, particularly involving the areas around the Ta Moan Thom, Ta Moan Toch and Ta Kra Bei temples, to the ICJ in the Hague. He stated that Cambodia has consistently pursued the peaceful resolution of border disputes through technical mechanisms and international law. An urgent meeting of the Joint Border Committee (JBC) with Thailand will be held to address the issue and continue demarcation and border marker placement between the two countries. '[Cambodia] is preparing to include the issue of Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Toch Temple, Ta Krabey Temple and the Mum Bei area on the JBC meeting agenda, to bring these matters directly to the ICJ,' he said. He said despite continuing peaceful cooperation with Thailand, such as border demarcation based on international legal standards, Cambodia 'reserves the right to protect its territorial integrity by all means, including the use of armed force, in case of any attempt to violate Cambodia's territorial integrity through military force.' Following this statement, former Prime Minister Hun Sen, now president of the Senate, issued a message supporting plans to take the case to the ICJ. 'Earlier, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed that the issues of Mum Bei, Ta Moan Thom Temple, Ta Moan Toch Temple and Ta Kra Bei Temple will be brought to the ICJ. I fully support this, as the 2000 MOU has made little progress, leading to ongoing ambiguity, mutual accusations and multiple armed clashes,' he said, via social media. 'If Thailand is sincerely committed to resolving this issue, it should agree to jointly bring the matter to the ICJ for a ruling, without Cambodia needing to file a case. We await Thailand's stance on this — will they dare or not?' he added. He encouraged the Kingdom's armed forces to remain patient but also be prepared to counter any form of aggression. The move to take the case to the ICJ has received widespread public support on social media. In a May 29 diplomatic note to the Thai Embassy, the foreign ministry stated that Thai soldiers attacked Cambodian forces at a post in Techo Morodok village, Morodok commune, Choam Ksan district, Preah Vihear province, resulting in the 'unjust' death of a Khmer soldier at 5.30am on May 28. The ministry clarified that Cambodia has maintained its presence at that location for a long time, predating a 2000 memorandum of understanding (MoU) on border demarcation and marker placement. The ministry protested the shooting. 'The Royal Government of Cambodia demands an urgent and thorough investigation into this violent incident. Those responsible for this cruel and illegal act must be brought to justice,' said the note. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN

AirAsia MOVE faces economic sabotage case for alleged overcharging in the Philippines

MANILA: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is preparing an economic sabotage case against the online travel agent platform of aviation group AirAsia for allegedly selling plane tickets to Tacloban at 'unreasonably' high prices. In a press briefing on Monday (June 2), Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon (pic) said they were finalising the complaints against AirAsia MOVE with the target of filing the case this week. Prior to this, the government agency issued a cease and desist order against the company headquartered in Malaysia on May 26. Dizon said the case stemmed from the complaint by Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez and Ormoc Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez, who booked Philippine Airlines (PAL) flights from Tacloban to Manila via AirAsia MOVE that cost them about P77,704 (US$1392) – or almost P40,000 each. Had they booked through the PAL website, the plane tickets would have only cost them P49,507, Dizon noted. 'I have asked them (Philippine National Police – Anti-Cybercrime Group) to take this website down today, so this AirAsia MOVE can no longer scam others. I'm sure Congressman Richard Gomez is not the only victim here,' Dizon announced in a press conference on Monday. 'I also asked the CAB (Civil Aeronautics Board) and DOTr aviation group to immediately file a criminal economic sabotage case against AirAsia MOVE because this is really economic sabotage,' Dizon added. Dizon stressed that AirAsia MOVE's one-way plane tickets are three times higher compared to the tickets sold by other airlines at around P12,000. Aside from Gomez, Dizon said he had also received a letter from the Office of the Civil Defence executive director, Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, detailing similar complaints about the selling of unreasonably high-priced plane tickets to Tacloban. Dizon also said that the overcharging might have stemmed from the limited access to the 53-year-old San Juanico Bridge, whose load limit has been limited to three tonnes starting May 15, barring trucks and buses from crossing the 2.16-km. bridge. 'Clearly there is a crisis there because the movements of goods and people were affected by the partial closure of the San Juanico Bridge to heavy vehicles, such as buses and trucks. They are taking advantage of the situation,' he lamented. The DOTr chief also instructed CAB to investigate other online platforms suspected of overcharging plane tickets not only in Tacloban but also in other destinations. Asked if Dizon had already asked AirAsia about this, he said that the multinational airline 'has nothing to do with' the issue surrounding the online travel booking platform and is only 'affiliated' with it. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
