Nothing went right for Pompey and their deliveries into the box were especially poor.They fought back in the second half and Connor Ogilvie will be rueing his late miss.It's an opportunity squandered for Pompey as a win would have made it extremely tough for Luton to have caught them. That being said their survival bid remains in good shape.Regan Poole and Marlon Pack did okay as centre-backs but Hayden Matthews and Rob Atkinson will be missed.

Rangers on verge of appointing Russell Martin as new head coach
The 39-year-old former Southampton boss will be installed in the Ibrox hotseat in the next 48 hours, barring any last-minute hitches. The appointment of a new man at the helm is the latest in a series of major changes at the club. An American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises secured a majority shareholding on Friday and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell officially began work on Monday, when he said that the recruitment of a new head coach would come to a conclusion 'in the coming days'. Outgoing Real Madrid assistant manager Davide Ancelotti, son of Carlo Ancelotti, and Martin were the two frontrunners for the post, vacated by Philippe Clement in February, with former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson taking over to the end of the season, which ended trophyless. However, it is the former MK Dons and Swansea boss, who had a short loan spell as a player at Rangers in 2018, who will be tasked with wrestling the power back from the other side of the city where Celtic this season won their 13th William Hill Premiership title in 14 seasons and have a stranglehold on Scottish football. However, many Rangers fans have revealed some dismay at the notion of Martin's arrival. The former Scotland international brought Southampton up to the Premier League through the play-offs in 2024 but was sacked in December as they headed back towards the Championship with one win from their first 16 games. Chris Hughton, Martin's boss at Norwich, offered a glowing character reference, saying on talkSPORT: 'If I'm looking at Russell's managerial background, he is known of course, for playing a certain way, very expansive in the way that he wants to play, very much a passing game and progression through the thirds. 'But he's a strong personality also. He's had a few knockbacks in his football career so far. 'I think any knockbacks, he will look at very much as experience and look to improve in every aspect that he can. I saw him recently, and he was in good form and really looking forward to getting back into the game. 'I think he's had a few offers. So this is somebody that's still very respected in the game, and of course, the rollercoaster in management, there are always going to be ups and downs, but he's a very confident individual and very confident in what he wants to do on the football pitch. 'He was very much a leader in the changing room, vocal in the meetings that we had and, of course, he was my voice when it came to any sort of direction on the players. 'So no surprise to me that he eventually went into management. He always showed those characteristics. And he was somebody that, as he improved in his career as a player, is of course very much looking to improve the same way in management.'

The Northern Ireland team-mates played a key role as Sunderland ended their six-year hiatus from the top flight with a dramatic Championship play-off win at Wembley. Playing in the Premier League is a life-long goal for both players, but both arrived at their current point through very different means. Defender Ballard came through the 'traditional' path, by working his way through Arsenal's academy. He didn't make a senior appearance for the Gunners but a number of loan spells brought him to the attention of Sunderland in 2022. Hume's path, on the other hand, meant he had to bide his time for a chance. When ambitions to move to England failed to come to fruition at the age of 16, he played in the Irish League in Northern Ireland with Linfield and Ballymena United, where the exposure to senior football at a young age certainly helped develop the combative player Sunderland fans have come to love. If supporters didn't know his name when he arrived for in January 2022, they certainly do now. "My journey is probably a lot different to a lot of people," admitted Hume. "I missed out on going across the water at 16 years of age. I didn't get picked by a lot of clubs and was told I wasn't ready, and things like that."Hume said he "worked my socks off" to earn a move to England, and he's been on Sunderland's journey from League One to the Premier League."I like to think I deserve the opportunity that I've got," he added."When I first moved to Sunderland they gave me time to adapt and get ready, and when I was ready to play I had my chance and thankfully took it. Now I am where I am, and I want to keep on pushing."Ballard said "it's down to the individual a lot of the time" after he joined the academy at Arsenal as an eight-year-old."At Arsenal, from the outside it's probably the perfect way to be brought up," he added."But then a lot of players get lost in that system and Trai is a great example of coming through at a club that didn't have the same facilities, but it just shows that it comes down to the individual. "You have to put the work in yourself. No amount of facilities of coaches at that young age are going to turn you into a good player." Hume 'loves the club' and 'happy where I'm at' After impressing throughout Sunderland's campaign, Hume has been linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light, with Wolves, Everton and a number of European clubs reportedly looking at the 23-year-old. However, Hume is happy at Sunderland and if anything happens "it's from the club"."I've said it ever since I moved to Sunderland, I really love my football here," he admitted."I love playing. I love the club, I'm happy where I'm at and if anything happens it's from the club. "I love playing for Sunderland so I'm happy being there."That connection with the club and its supporters would only have been enhanced on a fairytale promotion run. Ballard scored a last-gasp header in the second leg of the semi-final against Coventry, which was the winning goal on aggregate and booked Sunderland's place at Wembley. The celebrations could only be described as pandemonium as Ballard whipped off his shirt before being mobbed by his team-mates. "I think it was spur of the moment thing," he said with a smile. "As I kid I had dreamed of that celebration, but you can never really do it as a centre-back otherwise you'll get a booking. I think that was the one opportunity I could get as the game was done."You could feel it in the stadium as they were two really tough games against Coventry. I think it was relief more than anything and it was quite emotional to see the way the fans reacted."There was more joy to come as substitute Tom Watson scored an injury-time winner against Sheffield United as the Black Cats gained promotion in the most dramatic of circumstances. Ballard said that made his semi-final goal "even more special", and Hume added the drama made "it more emotional and more sweet"."We didn't dominate both games, we had to dig in and we had to stay strong as a team and stick together," added Hume."Personally, that's the way I like to win games. I like to do it together as a team and you have to work hard to earn that. "We worked as hard as we could, and to get those two late goals there was relief, joy and all the emotions you can think of really."

Martin is the man entrusted by the new Ibrox hierarchy to get Gers challenging again Russell Martin has been appointed as the new manager of Rangers on a three-year deal. Record Sport exclusively broke the news on Wednesday night that Martin will be officially paraded in the next 48 hours after convincing new chairman Andrew Cavenagh that he was the best man for the job. The Englishman has been without a club since getting the sack at Southampton last December, just six months after leading the club back to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs. It's believed the ex-Gers and Scotland defender had been in discussions with Leicester City but has knocked back the chance to replace Ruud van Nistlerooy by finalising a return to Govan instead. The appointment brings the near four-month-long search for a new manager in Govan to an end. The Light Blues had been without a permanent boss since sacking Philippe Clement at the end of February, with former club captain Barry Ferguson taking on the reins on an interim basis for the remainder of the campaign. But with 49ers Enterprises completing their takeover of Rangers last Friday, the hunt to get a new man in the dugout was ramped up. Sweeping changes in the Ibrox hierarchy have also seen Kevin Thelwell appointed as the club's new sporting director, with fellow Everton colleague Dan Purdy also joining Gers as technical director. Martin has already had a brief taste of what being at Ibrox is all about, having spent the second half of the 2017/18 season on loan with Gers during his playing career. The 39-year-old will be keen to get down to business straight away, with Rangers entering the second qualifying round of the Champions League on July 22/23. It's expected he'll be joined by long term assistant Matty Gill, while former Gers full-back Maurice Ross has also been earmarked for a key role in the coaching staff Martin's arrival comes following a major plot twist in talks with rival target Davide Ancelotti, who suddenly appeared to cool on the prospect of making the move from Madrid to Glasgow's south side. The son of managerial great Carlo appeared to be the frontrunner after holding a series of discussions with Thelwell and Gretar Steinsson, football adviser to the San Francisco 49ers. But Ancelotti's camp began to stall on a move to Ibrox at the start of this week, with the young coach being lined up by Como as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas - who could succeed Al-Hilal-bound Simone Inzaghi at Inter Milan.
