Sweating Spacecraft May Be the Key To Greener Space Travel

Space junk surrounds us. The European Space Agency estimates that there are approximately 130 million pieces of space junk from the over 6,800 successful rocket launches that have occurred since 1957. The South Pacific Ocean Uninhabited Area (SPOUA), a region near Point Nemo, is called the spacecraft cemetery as it is where those craft are routinely crashed at the end of their usefulness. Orbital debris falls into the Earth's atmosphere and burns up on its way back down.
Until recently, marked notably by the multiple successes by SpaceX, many spacecraft have been one-and-done use cases. The longest-serving spacecraft in history, the space shuttle Discovery, only flew a few dozen times before it was retired in 2011.
Scientists at Texas A&M University's Department of Aerospace Engineering are working to develop and test a 3D-printed material that aims to make spacecraft reusable and space travel greener in partnership with Canopy Aerospace.
The work is enabled by a $1.7 million Air Force Small Business Technology Transfer grant.

Spacecraft returning to Earth are subjected to intense heat. NASA's space shuttle experiences temperatures around 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit during reentry. NASA's Orion spaceship sustains even hotter temperatures, near 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, the same temperature Apollo 13 reached during its reentry. Even higher temperatures are possible during hypersonic reentry.
Traditionally, spacecraft rely on heat shields or ceramic tiles to serve as a barrier from the extreme temperatures. SpaceX's Starship has an advanced heat shield, made up of approximately 18,000 hexagonal tiles.
The solution the partners are looking to prove out is a cooling method that acts as a heat barrier. Experts are testing transpiration cooling for spacecraft. This method features a layer of gas along the craft's surface that cools it and provides a barrier between the craft and extreme temperatures.
"The air around rockets becomes extremely hot as they reenter Earth's atmosphere — often exceeding 10,000 degrees Celsius. This requires heat shields to protect the rocket from overheating, which are not fully reusable. Upon mission completion, they need to be replaced or refurbished, which makes space travel astronomically expensive," Dr. Hassan Saad Ifti, assistant professor of aerospace engineering at Texas A&M University, told Newsweek.
"This technology creates a gaseous layer as the rocket 'sweats' or transpires a coolant gas, which acts as the heat shield. Once the mission is complete, the coolant gas tanks can be refueled for the next mission. This would make the rocket more reusable, and perhaps one day, we will have a fully and rapidly reusable rocket, just like the aircraft we fly today," he said.
This thermal effect is similar to how a puffer jacket works, Dr. Ifti explained. "This is why a puffer jacket is so effective. It traps air in these pockets, so it is the insulation from the air keeping you warm, not the solid part of the jacket."
The hypothesis is that when a vehicle uses the gas barrier as opposed to a single-use heat shield, flight times between missions could be reduced from years or months to days or hours, more similar to the turnaround time of a traditional passenger jet.
The gas barrier is not a new concept. Though the idea has existed for years, limitations in materials science, computational power and ground testing abilities have made it challenging to implement, Ifti said.
Testing rig development is being led by William Matthews, a fourth-year Ph.D. student at Texas A&M. "We should see that the material's surface is cooler at hypersonic speeds when the coolant flow is introduced than the baseline when no coolant is present," Matthews said. "Depending on how well the gas permeates the material, there are a lot of potential outcomes for this technology, and these tests should help us decide which direction we want to go."
Initial wind tunnel testing will take place at Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station's National Aerothermochemistry and Hypersonics Laboratory. The results of that testing will determine if a full-scale testing mission is worth investing in ahead of any possible application for commercial use.
"I am optimistic about this technology," said Ifti. "If all goes well, we could see sweaty spacecraft in the sky by the end of our lifetimes."

A private lunar lander from Japan crashed while attempting a touchdown on Friday, the latest casualty in the commercial rush to the Moon. Tokyo-based company ispace declared the mission a failure several hours after communication was lost with the lander. Flight controllers scrambled to gain contact, but were met with only silence and said they were concluding the mission. Communications ceased less than two minutes before the spacecraft's scheduled landing on the Moon with a mini rover. Until then, the descent from lunar orbit seemed to be going well. Takeshi Hakamada, ispace chief executive officer and founder, apologised to everyone who contributed to the mission, the second lunar strikeout for the company. Two years ago, the company's first moonshot ended in a crash landing, giving rise to the name Resilience for its successor lander. Resilience carried a rover with a shovel to gather lunar dirt as well as a Swedish artist's toy-size red house for placement on the Moon's dusty surface. Company officials said it was too soon to know whether the same problem doomed both missions. 'This is the second time that we were not able to land. So we really have to take it very seriously,' Mr Hakamada told reporters. He stressed the company would press ahead with more lunar missions. A preliminary analysis indicates the laser system for measuring the altitude did not work as planned and the lander descended too fast, officials said. 'Based on these circumstances, it is currently assumed that the lander likely performed a hard landing on the lunar surface,' the company said in a written statement. Long the province of governments, the Moon became a target of private outfits in 2019, with more flops than successes along the way. Launched in January from Florida on a long, roundabout journey, Resilience entered lunar orbit last month. It shared a SpaceX ride with Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, which reached the Moon faster and became the first private entity to successfully land there in March. Another US company, Intuitive Machines, arrived at the Moon a few days after Firefly. But the tall, spindly lander face-planted in a crater near the south pole and was declared dead within hours. Resilience was targeting the top of the Moon, a less treacherous place than the shadowy bottom. The ispace team chose a flat area with few boulders in Mare Frigoris or Sea of Cold, a long and narrow region full of craters and ancient lava flows that stretches across the near side's northern tier. Plans had called for the 7.5ft Resilience to beam back pictures within hours and for the lander to lower the piggybacking rover onto the lunar surface this weekend. Made of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic with four wheels, ispace's European-built rover — named Tenacious — sported a high-definition camera to scout out the area and a shovel to scoop up some lunar dirt for Nasa. The rover was going to stick close to the lander, going in circles at a speed of less than one inch per second.

A tribute to Charles A. Wright, a trailblazer in Black STEM education

The Florida A&M University family lost yet another titan May 26 when Charles A. Wright, Ph.D., an engineering professor and department chair, died at the age of 82. For those unaware, Wright grew up on a farm in rural Glenwood, Georgia, during a critical time in American history when Jim Crow segregation laws were the norm across the South, a reality that created separate and unequal educational experiences for Black children who maintained an interest in higher education. The racial strictures of that era did not deter Wright from excelling academically in high school and later at Savannah State University, a storied HBCU where he graduated with a degree in civil engineering technology in 1967. As Wright would often remind his students and mentees, Black college students during his youth were often discouraged from pursuing studies in higher level mathematics and science, but his natural curiosity to understand nature and how things worked inspired him to earn a master's degree in civil and public works engineering from the then recently integrated University of Florida in 1972, and a doctoral degree in civil engineering transportation from Vanderbilt University in 1991. Wright keenly understood the need to pass his vast reservoir of knowledge about science and mathematics to succeeding generations, a passion that propelled many of his pupils to pursue advance degrees in science, technology, and mathematics long before the STEM acronym became a buzzword in academia in the 1980's. In furtherance of his passion, in 1979, Wright was named the senior lecturer at Egerton Agricultural College in Njoro, Kenya, and he spent the next several years teaching future civil engineers on its campus. Upon returning to the United States in 1982, Wright was hired by then Florida A&M University President Walter Smith to teach civil engineering, a position that saw him eventually rise to the rank of professor emeritus upon his retirement from teaching in civil engineering at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. While providing his students rigorous instruction, Wright found time to author or co-author over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and books about civil engineering, technology, and safety assessments. In 2011, cognizant that per the National Science Foundation, Black people represented only 7% of the STEM workforce nationwide, Wright was hired to serve as the inaugural executive director for the James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center (JECUTC) at South Carolina State University, another storied public HBCU located in Orangeburg. Under his leadership, the transportation center became a key hub for studying and advancing transportation needs ranging from regional transit to transcontinental travel. While Wright's professional accomplishments will be remembered for ages to come, he leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 58 years, Barbara Wright, three children, five grandchildren, numerous godchildren, and thousands of former students across the globe who owe a debt of gratitude for his wise tutelage. In fact, his professional zeal was only matched by his civic engagements through his beloved Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the Tallahassee Chapter of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., and historic Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and deacon until his untimely illness and passing from Earthly labor to Heavenly reward. And as one of his many godsons, I can personally attest that his loss is one that cannot be easily assuaged, but we all can rest assured that the City of Tallahassee - and the world - are all for the better because he lived and pursued the FAMU motto, "Excellence with Caring," in words and deeds. Presented by The Spotlight The alliance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk — to borrow a phrase from the space community — has undergone a rapid unscheduled disassembly. Yet amid all the fireworks Thursday from the duo's public meltdown, one area of the space world seems to have a brighter future: the moon mission. Context: Musk, the SpaceX founder and well-known Mars enthusiast, has argued against returning astronauts to the lunar surface. But the stunning forced exit of the billionaire's hand-picked nominee for the top NASA job and Musk's massive rupture with the president has handed moon backers in Congress and industry an opening — and they're seizing it. What's happening, Part I: A ton of major space companies — just not SpaceX — are launching an ad campaign going big on the moon, according to two industry officials granted anonymity to discuss the effort. The move is the first sign of real pushback against the behemoth space company and its founder, who only days ago seemed to lock down government contracts every time he blinked. A television ad funded by the companies, who do not go by an umbrella name, will appear on television in the coming days with a pitch clearly aimed at Trump. A narrator, underlaid by dramatic images of America's Apollo missions, implores voters to call senators in support of the moon mission and 'keep America first in space.' A separate letter addressed to the Senate Commerce Committee and obtained by POLITICO backs investments in the moon, and is signed by a lengthy slate of prominent space companies — but not (you guessed it) SpaceX. What's happening, Part II: The Senate Commerce Committee on Thursday evening unveiled a new reconciliation bill that would channel $10 billion to NASA, much of it for the space agency's effort to return to the moon through the Artemis program. The White House's NASA budget had proposed major cuts to Artemis, including slashing a planned lunar space station and moon missions. 'Anybody who's following space will have noticed how deeply committed [the committee is] to getting back to the moon, particularly before the Chinese get there,' said a committee aide, who was granted anonymity to discuss the bill. SpaceX'd Out: All of this is happening amid Musk's very public fall from grace. Trump, during the social media showdown with his former confidante, threatened to cancel Musk's contracts with the government. The SpaceX founder responded by saying he would end the Dragon spacecraft contract, which is the U.S.'s only reliable way of accessing the International Space Station. (But he also suggested late Thursday night that he might not actually do so.) And of course, Trump last week abruptly pulled the NASA administrator nomination for Musk ally Jared Isaacman, just days ahead of his likely confirmation by the Senate. Isaacman, speaking on a podcast this week, linked his ouster to Musk's provocative departure from the White House. 'I don't think the timing was much of a coincidence,' he said. What next: This all means Congress may now have a stronger hand in negotiations with the White House over the NASA budget, which was written before Musk's break from Trump and heavily favors Mars. The administration's budget proposes major cuts to spending for the moon in favor of nearly $1 billion for landing an astronaut on Mars. SpaceX, thanks to provisions in the bill, was likely to snag a lucrative contract to build the landing system for any red planet mission. That seems much less feasible now. Senators from states with large NASA centers — think Alabama and Louisiana — are particularly keen to latch onto moon funding. Trump has voiced support for a Mars mission, meaning the idea may not have completely faded. But with Musk's implosion and the latest moon push, a return to the lunar surface is on firmer ground than it was just a week ago. WELCOME TO POLITICO PRO SPACE. Mike Haridopolos, who chairs the House's subcommittee on space and aeronautics, told me Wednesday that he was against the White House's massive NASA cuts — making him one of the first Republicans to publicly voice opposition. 'Will a 26 percent cut to NASA hold? Absolutely not,' he said. 'We're going to be talking with the president and his team, with OMB about the paramount importance of space.' China: Haridopolos emphasized competition with China as a driving reason not to slash the space agency's funding. The proposed cancellation of Gateway — a lunar space station partnership with the European Space Agency — opens the way for Chinese influence, he said. Sen. Ted Cruz, the Texas Republican who leads the committee that oversees NASA, underscored a remarkably similar message during Isaacman's confirmation hearing. The Florida lawmaker said he was optimistic that the cuts wouldn't come to fruition. Trump 'believes in the space program,' he said. 'He knows that we want there's no second place to space.' TICKET TO RIDE: Sens. John Cornyn, Ben Ray Luján, Rick Scott, and Mark Kelly introduced a bill Thursday that would streamline licensing processes for commercial space companies, opening the way to a boom in rocket launches. The bill, dubbed the Launch Act, would allow the Federal Aviation Administration to eliminate overly bureaucratic steps in the application process. The law would also create a streamlined process for licensing commercial satellites used to observe the Earth. And it would move the Office of Space Commerce from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and place it directly under the Transportation secretary, a move that would elevate the office's access to key decision makers. Why it matters: Companies such as SpaceX have long complained about the slow pace of launch licensing. Streamlining the process could lead to a significant uptick in an already booming schedule. Companies launched 145 U.S. rockets in 2024, up from 109 the previous year. Military SPACE COMMAND: Lawmakers pressed Air Force Secretary Troy Meink on Thursday to keep U.S. Space Command in Colorado as the Trump administration weighs moving the headquarters to Alabama. The Defense Department established the command in 2019 and temporarily placed it in Colorado while the Air Force evaluated permanent sites. Trump chose Alabama as the permanent headquarters but former President Joe Biden reversed that decision and selected Colorado. What he said: Meink, in a House Armed Services Committee hearing, conceded that Space Command would see civilian employees quit if the HQ moved from Colorado to Alabama. 'It would be very important that we manage that move over a period of time, if that occurs,' the Air Force chief said. Rep. Jeff Crank (R-Colo.) called for the Pentagon to resume headquarters construction at Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs, calling it the 'most effective' home for Space Command. Context: Officials have paused construction because of a legal requirement to hold off until the Pentagon inspector general and the Government Accountability Office released their reports on the Biden administration's 2023 basing decision. Those reports are out, but Meink said the Air Force is still reviewing the GAO's findings.
