Kuwait Convicts Nine In One Of Its Deadliest Labour Tragedies

Gulf Insider14-05-2025

A Kuwaiti criminal court has sentenced three individuals to three years in prison with hard labor for involuntary manslaughter following a devastating fire last year that killed nearly 50 migrant workers in a residential building housing laborers.
According to Al Rai, a local Kuwaiti newspaper, the Court of Misdemeanors handed down its ruling this week, convicting the defendants for their role in one of the deadliest labor housing incidents in the country's recent history.
The court also sentenced two defendants to one year in prison for perjury, and four others to one year with hard labor for harboring a person wanted by authorities. The identities and nationalities of the nine convicted individuals have not been publicly disclosed, though the majority are reported to be foreign nationals.
The fire tore through a seven-story building in Kuwait's Mangaf area, which was home to approximately 200 workers, most of them migrants. The blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning and is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, which later ignited gas cylinders stored on the lower floor, accelerating the spread of the flames.
The tragedy resulted in the deaths of 49 workers though some media reports place the death toll at 50 and left dozens more injured. Most of the victims were reportedly from India and other South Asian countries.

Kuwait Arrests Indian ‘Housewife' Posing As Doctor, Running Underground Clinic

Kuwaiti authorities have arrested an Indian woman for practicing medicine without a licence at an unregistered clinic in the Jleeb Al Shuyoukh area, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior. The arrest was carried out by detectives from the Farwaniya police command's Jleeb Al Shuyoukh Investigations Section as part of Kuwait's ongoing crackdown on illegal medical practices. At the time of arrest, the woman was reportedly treating a child. Although officially listed as a 'housewife,' she was found operating a clinic stocked with various medications, a blood pressure monitor, a stethoscope, and infant formula supplied by the Ministry of Health. Investigators revealed that the woman had been preparing and dispensing 'folk remedies' in capsule form without medical supervision or government approval. She admitted to having no qualifications or official licenses. Some medicines were reportedly imported, while others were sourced from local pharmacies. A security source said the woman primarily treated expatriates who were living in Kuwait without valid residency or work permits, and therefore unable to access public healthcare. Patients were charged modest fees for medical services. The Ministry of Interior confirmed the suspect has been referred to the public prosecution for further legal action.

Pensioner Arrested Over Fraud In Kuwait

Kuwaiti police have arrested a pensioner accused of defrauding several people of money after he duped themselves into believing he has strong connections. The suspect was arrested inside a resthouse in the Kabd area near Kuwait's Capital Governorate after he had deliberately altered his facial features by growing a beard and wearing glasses, Al Anba newspaper reported. The case surfaced after several Kuwaiti citizens had filed reports to police, claiming they had met a man in his fifties, who had tricked them into believing he could finalise complicated transactions for them due to his purported connections, the report quoted a security source as saying. The claimants said the suspect accompanied them to a government institution where he shook hands with the employees in a sign of familiarity. Having allegedly fleeced them of a total of KD90,000 (about $293,215), the complainants added that the suspect had later eluded fulfilling his commitments and eventually turned off his phone. During interrogation, the suspect admitted to having been used to fraud and would take his victims to his former workplace, the source added. After deceiving the victims with his connections, he would ask them to rest before he entered the offices of the officials. He would later inform the victims that their affairs would be seen to and receive sums of money from them in exchange for allegedly completing their transactions.

Kuwaiti Teacher And Officials Jailed For Leaking Exam Papers On Social Media

A Kuwaiti teacher and two education officials have been sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour for their roles in leaking high school examination papers through social media. The Misdemeanour Appeals Court this week upheld a lower court's ruling against the three defendants, a former head of the Ministry of Education's secret printing press, a female staff member, and a teacher, following charges of disclosing confidential government information. The convictions followed an intensive investigation led by Kuwait's Public Prosecution, in coordination with the Ministries of Interior and Education, after a series of exam leaks were discovered circulating on social platforms such as WhatsApp, sometimes sold for varying prices. Authorities found that the operation was not isolated. Investigators uncovered a network involving intermediaries, including minors, who acted as conduits for distributing the leaked exams.
