Mathews bids farewell to Tests, eyes T20 World Cup glory
Galle, June 22 (UNI) Former Sri Lankan skipper, Angelo Mathews made his final appearance in royal whites against Bangladesh here, the same venue he made his debut in 2009.
Mathews is the second-highest run scorer at the venue with 2253 runs in 34 Test matches.
While speaking in the post-match press conference on Saturday, he spoke on the draw against Bangladesh, his final appearance in the red-ball format for Sri Lanka.
'Once you get a 400 in the first innings, it's really difficult to lose a game. So we had to bat really
well in our first innings as well," he said.
'I thought we scrapped our way through and to minimize the lead. And also in the second innings, Shanto batted brilliantly,' Mathews said.
Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 148 and 125 not out in both the innings as he led from the front and secured himself the Player of the Match award, an ICC report said.
'It was a tough wicket for the bowlers, to be honest. There were times where it turned a little bit but didn't really have anything for the bowlers,' Mathews said, speaking on the wicket and opportunities for the bowlers.
'We could have pushed for a win, but unfortunately, we couldn't,' he said.
While Mathews stepped away from the longest format, he spoke on his World Cup aspirations in
the shorter formats of the game.
'I've still got six more months to go. I'll give it my best shot for the (2026) T20 World Cup,' he said.
'I would love to sign off with a World Cup win. I'll just see how my body goes,' Mathews said.
Mathews was a part of the side which won the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in 2014, beating India in
the final.
The 38-year-old addressed the love he's received since he announced his retirement last month.
'I'm overwhelmed," he said.
'Ever since I announced my retirement, I just can't imagine the love that I have received up to now,'
Mathews said.
'It is so special because you feel as a player, once you give your 110% to the country, the amount of appreciation that you receive is unbelievable," he said.
'It feels so special, very heartwarming and I'm so thankful to all of them,' Mathews said.
While Mathews has retired from Tests, he will continue to remain available in the white-ball format,"
he added.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will face a stern test to keep themselves fit and motivated to play only ODIs for India following their recent Test retirements. But all of us must understand that, like everyone else, the game will eventually move on from them, and they will move on from the game,' Ganguly told PTI in an interaction. The former BCCI president also stated that he believed Kohli could have had a great run in England, had he chosen to continue in Tests. 'Retirement should happen when people ask 'Why?' and not 'Why not?' As a player, you always know your place. He knew he didn't have the best of 5 years in Tests but champions like him find ways to rediscover themselves. If Virat was on this England tour, I'm confident he would've scored heavily. But he felt it was time to go,' Ganguly said. Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir had recently said that the doors will remain open for both stalwarts to feature in the next World Cup until they keep performing. 'Look, it's still a long way away. We still have a T20 World Cup before that, and that is again a huge tournament that is going to happen in India, which is in February-March. So the entire focus at the moment, after England, will be on the T20 World Cup, and November-December 2027 is still two-and-a-half years away. And I've always said one thing – if you keep performing, age is just a number,' he said ahead of the tour to England. With a tour to Bangladesh in August in limbo, Rohit and Kohli will most likely return to international action only four months later when India travel to Australia for three ODIs in a limited-overs tour. India are then slated to play 21 more bi-lateral ODIs up until January 2027 according to the ICC's FTP schedule. Won't be easy for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play 2027 WC: Sourav Ganguly
It won't be easy for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to remain fit and find a place in India's ODI World Cup squad in 2027, former captain Sourav Ganguly says. "All of us must understand, just like everyone, the game will go away from them and they will go away from the game," Ganguly told PTI in a lengthy interview at his residence. The next ODI World Cup is scheduled in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia and by the time the prestigious ICC event is played Kohli will be 38 years old and Rohit will touch 40. Till then India have 27 ODIs to play spread across nine bilateral series. That means Kohli and Rohit will hardly get 15 international games a year. "It won't be easy, with 15 games a year," Ganguly said. Live Events With 25,000 runs and 83 international hundreds between them, both Kohli and Rohit have expressed their desire to play the 50-over global event after recently retiring from Test cricket. Ganguly, an exceptional ODI batter during his career, was asked if he had any word of advice for them. "I have got no advice. I think they know the game as much I do. They will take a call." Ganguly acknowledged that finding a player of the caliber of Kohli to replace him won't be easy, though he is not worried about Indian cricket after the retirement of the two stalwarts. "I was not concerned at all. Virat is a class player. Finding his replacement will take time. But the rest, I wasn't surprised." Talking about Yuvraj Singh , Ganguly said he was a special player who flourished in white-ball formats but did not get enough chances to touch his real potential in traditional format. "I remember seeing Yuvraj for the first tine in Nairobi and saw that he is special. What he went on to do for India after that in one-day cricket is unreal. He was 2007 World T20 player player of the series, 2011 World Cup, player of the series, runs, wickets fielding, he was special. "Unfortunately he did not get many opportunities in Test matches. He played about 30 odd Test matches, he got stuck between Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Ganguly and VVS Laxman, but a special player," he said.
