2 Indian students jailed in US for over $8 million fraud targeting senior citizens

Mint14 hours ago

Two Indian students in the United States have been sentenced in separate yet similar cases related to elaborate scams that targeted elderly Americans and led to millions of dollars in losses, reported news agency PTI.
20-year-old Kishan Rajeshkumar Patel, who came to the US on a student visa, was sentenced to 63 months (over five years) in prison after pleading guilty to money laundering conspiracy.
Patel was involved in an online phishing scam that impersonated US government officials and employed fear tactics to extort money and gold from senior citizens.
'The conspiracy used various online phishing methods and impersonated US government officials, while Patel fraudulently received the cash and gold from victims, conveying a portion to co-conspirators and keeping a percentage for his own benefit,' the report quoted the US Department of Justice (DOJ).
At least 25 senior citizens lost money up to $2,694,156 due to the fraud. On August 24, 2024, Patel was arrested in Granite Shoals, Texas, while trying to collect what he thought was $130,000. Since August 29, he has been held in federal custody.
'This defendant took advantage of his visa status in our country and participated in an international fraud scheme,' the report quoted US Attorney Justin Simmons. He further added, 'Patel defrauded vulnerable American citizens out of millions of dollars by impersonating government officials and preying on his victims' fears of adverse government action.'
Patel, along with Dhruv Rajeshbhai Mangukiya, another Indian national, pleaded guilty on June 16, 2025. He is waiting for his sentence.
In a different but related case, Moinuddin Mohammed, another Indian student, received an eight-year prison sentence earlier this year for a similar scam that defrauded elderly Americans of nearly $6 million.
Although all three held student visas in the US, the authorities have not revealed the educational institutions they attended.
The US Justice Department and the FBI have cautioned people, especially senior citizens, regarding unverified communications from individuals claiming to represent government or law enforcement agencies.

Donkey route to US: Agent held for arranging fake passports

New Delhi: A 49-year-old Mumbai-based travel agent was arrested by IGI Airport Police for allegedly arranging forged passports and facilitating the illegal entry of an Indian woman into the United States via Germany and Mexico. According to police, the arrest of Zakir Khan , a resident of Airoli in Mumbai, is linked to a 2019 case involving Gujarat woman Kinjalben Naranbhai Patel. Patel was deported from US after being detained for over two years. She had used a forged passport to exit India and illegally enter the US, bypassing immigration checks. She was intercepted at IGI Airport in Dec 2019 following her deportation. "Investigation revealed that Patel travelled to the US using a passport issued in another person's name. The passport was handed to her at Chennai airport by an agent, Hemang Modi, who posed as her father to get her through immigration. She later travelled to Mexico, returned the passport, and then entered the US illegally," said additional commissioner of police (IGI Airport) Usha Rangnani. "Agents Hemang Chanderkant Modi and Hitesh alias Bobby were arrested in 2024. They named Zakir Khan as an associate. Several attempts to nab him failed, but based on specific inputs, a police team tracked and arrested him in Ahmedabad," Rangnani added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thị trường có dấu hiệu suy thoái không? Factory making spurious IMFL busted near Jamnagar

Rajkot: In dry Gujarat, Jamnagar police busted an illegal liquor manufacturing unit on the outskirts of the city and seized about 700 litres of spurious Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) along with raw materials and equipment used to produce it. The liquor was being made in a water tank. Acting on a tip-off, police raided the factory at Navy Moda village near Jamnagar and arrested six persons. According to police, the operation was a joint venture led by two residents of the area, Hardipsinh alias Lalo Jadeja and Shrirajsinh alias Siddhrajsinh Zala. They were allegedly collaborating with Arjunsinh Sodha, Suryapratapsinh Rathod, Saitansinh Rathod and Savarlal Mevala, all of whom are from Rajasthan. "These persons were producing spurious liquor in a water tank by mixing alcohol spirit, chemicals and coloured liquids to replicate the taste and appearance of IMFL," said a police officer involved in the raid. "The accused made couterfeit labels of liquor brands and were packaging it in sealed bottles and pouches. They were using equipment such as beakers and an alcohol meter to measure and mix the concoction. The counterfeit liquor was being distributed in Jamnagar city," said Premsukh Delu, superintendent of police, Jamnagar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The perpetrators had counterfeit stickers and bottle caps of various liquor brands and a packaging machine.
