The 30-kilometre (km) line, which includes 14 stations, will feature the tallest metro station in the world with Sheikh Mohammed approving the design of the 74-metre high Emaar Properties station, the announcement said. Inspired by the concept of a crossing gateway, the station, designed by American architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), will cover an area of approximately 11,000 square metres (sqm) and have an estimated capacity of 160,000 passengers per day. The Blue Line will serve nine areas with an estimated population of one million as outlined in the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. In December 2024, Zawya Projects had reported that the 20.5 billion UAE dirhams ($5.6 billion) Blue Line will become operational on 9 September 2029, after the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) awarded the main contract to Turkey's MAPA-Limak consortium. The completion of the Blue Line project will take the total length of railways in Dubai to 131 km, with 78 stations and 168 trains (comprising 157 Metro trains and 11 Tram trains). Currently, the total total length of Dubai Metro network 90 km, and includes around 52 km for the Red Line, 23 km for the Green Line, and 15 km for Route 2020. Since its opening on September 9, 2009, the Dubai Metro has served more than 2.52 billion passengers, with an average daily passenger count of 900,000 last year. The number of Dubai Metro passengers is expected to exceed 300 million in 2026 and reach 320 million by 2031. Key elements of the Blue Line The Dubai Metro Blue Line will also feature three interchange stations: Creek Station at Al Jaddaf on the Green Line, Centrepoint Station at Al Rashidiya on the Red Line, and International City 1 Station on the Blue Line, in addition to the iconic station located in Dubai Creek Harbour. The line includes 9 elevated stations and 5 underground stations, and marks the first Dubai Metro line to cross Dubai Creek on a 1,300-metre-long viaduct. It will also be home to the largest underground interchange station in the Dubai Metro network, spanning over 44,000 sqm. The new line offers direct connectivity between Dubai International Airport and nine key areas, including Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City 1 and 2, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City. The maximum capacity of the Blue Line exceeds 850,000 passengers per day, based on the scale of the stations included within the project scope. Passenger numbers are expected to reach 200,000 per day by 2030, rising to 320,000 per day by 2040. (Writing by SA Kader; Editing by Anoop Menon) (

This Dubai Metro Blue Line station will be the tallest in the world
Have a look… Today, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the first Dubai Metro Blue Line station: Emaar Properties Metro Station. 3 of 12 His Highness also reviewed the evolution of both the interior and exterior designs of metro stations. The exterior was inspired by the shape of a seashell, alongside the distinctive iconic architecture of Expo and Emaar Properties stations. His Highness also approved the distinctive architectural design of the iconic Emaar Properties Station, the highest metro station in the world, standing at 74 metres. Emaar secured the naming rights for the station for ten years, starting from its official inauguration in 2029. A brand-new Dubai Metro station design was also unveiled for the station. And it doesn't look like any of the stations we currently have. The Emaar Properties Metro Station will be the highest metro station in the world, standing at 74 meters. This particular station will mark the starting point of the 30-kilometer Blue Line, which will increase the Dubai Metro's entire length to 131 kilometers across 78 stations. The important question: When will operations begin? The Dubai Metro Blue Line will be ready to start operations on September 9, 2029, aka 09-09-29 as announced by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority. For those of us who use the Dubai Metro, we know that this is an ode to the opening of the original Dubai Metro, which opened on September 9, 2009, aka 09-09-09. This also means that the launch will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro. Learn more about the Dubai Metro Blue Line The Blue Line for Dubai's Metro was first discussed back in 2006, along with other potential lines and the expansion of the existing Red and Green lines. Plans changed amid the global economic slowdown, but now… the Blue Line is back on track. Dubai Metro Blue Line Route Map The above map was shared by Dubai Media Office back in November 2023. Although not confirmed, we now know more or less what route the Blue Line will follow when it is operational. The next station is… The Dubai Metro Blue Line services nine districts. It will connect to the existing Centrepoint station on the Red Line, and to Creek station on the Green Line… It will include three interchange stations: Al Jaddaf, Al Rashidiya and International City 1. From Centrepoint, the Blue Line will run through Mirdif, where there will be a station (most likely) outside Mirdif City Centre Mall. From here it will pass through Al Warqa and then Dubai International City 1, Dubai International City 2 and 3, and Dubai Silicon Oasis before arriving at its last station at Dubai International Academic City. From Creek, the Blue Line will make its way over the Dubai Creek (the first metro project to cross Dubai Creek on a 1.3 km viaduct) and will have a station in Dubai Festival City and Dubai Creek Harbour, before moving to the Ras Al Khor Industrial Area. From here, it will move towards Dubai International City 1 station, where it will connect with the line coming from Centrepoint – essentially making this metro station a junction (transfer station). *Etihad Rail: The route map for the train linking the seven emirates* The new route will also benefit students in Dubai International Academic City, thus reducing the need for buses, taxis, and personal cars. The majority of the 30m track will be underground (about 15.5km in total) to a depth of up to 70 metres, with five (marked in yellow on the map) of the proposed 14 stations being designated as 'underground stations'. As for the official station names… the naming rights for the next stations will be announced soon. Project value? Wondering about the value of this huge megaproject? According to official sources, it is valued at 56 billion dirham. Images: Dubai Media Office > Sign up for FREE to get exclusive updates that you are interested in

Work begins on Dubai Metro's Blue Line mega project as first station is revealed
Work is under way on Dubai Metro's Blue Line project, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, announced on Monday. He wrote on X that the foundation stone for the line's first station has been laid, adding that it represents an 'architectural icon'. It will be called the Emaar Properties station. 'During the laying of the foundation stone for the first station on the Dubai Metro's Blue Line, which has a total benefit valued at Dh56 billion, the station represents an architectural icon that will be added to Dubai's cultural icons,' he said. 'It will be the first station on the Blue Line, which will extend 30km, bringing the total length of Dubai's railways to 131km and 78 stations.' He added that the Dubai Metro has transported more than 2.5 billion people since its launch, at an average of 900,000 per day, and that the new route will be a 'major addition' to the emirate's transport infrastructure. 'We continue to develop the city … we continue to build the best city to live in the world,' he concluded. What do we know about the Blue Line? The Blue Line is set to transform the north-east of the city, easing traffic congestion and establishing a direct link with Dubai International Airport. The Dh18 billion project will include 14 new stations and add 30km to the Metro network, with 15.5km underground. The expansion is part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which has easier commuting among its top priorities, to cater for a fast-growing population. Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority said the Blue Line would connect five principal urban regions of Dubai – Bur Dubai/Deira, Downtown/Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina/JBR and Expo City Dubai. When completed, the Metro network will be 131km long and encompass 78 stations served by 168 trains. Where will it go? The new line will comprise two main routes that start with connections from the Red and Green Lines. The first route is to begin in Al Jaddaf at the Creek Interchange Station on the Green Line and will cross Dubai Creek on a 1.3km bridge. The route will pass through new stations at Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor, before reaching Dubai International City 1, which is an interchange station. The line continues towards Dubai International City 2 and 3 and on to Dubai Silicon Oasis, with the route ending at Academic City. This part of the line section is to span 21km and include 10 stations. The second route connects with the Red Line in Al Rashidiya at the Centrepoint interchange station. It will connect with new stations at Mirdif and Al Warqaa, before connecting with the interchange station at Dubai International City 1. The new line on this section is to be 9km and will include four stations. The travel time between these destinations is expected to be from 10 to 25 minutes. The project also includes the construction of a metro depot at Al Ruwayyah 3, beyond Academic City. The project is scheduled to be finished in 2029, coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro. Dubai Metro Blue Line – in pictures
