Two Dead, Six Injured in Lipis Car-Lorry Collision
KUANTAN: Two people died and six others were injured after the car they were traveling in hit a lorry that had stopped on the road shoulder at Kilometre 37, Jalan Lingkaran Tengah Utama (LTU) near Kampung Chegar Perah, Lipis early this morning.
Lipis district police chief Superintendent Ismail Man said initial investigations found that the 33-year-old lorry driver and his girlfriend were on their way to Ketereh, Kelantan to deliver furniture, while the car driver, a 45-year-old man with seven passengers, was on his way to Kota Bharu, Kelantan to visit family members.
'Upon arriving at the scene, the lorry driver had stopped at the roadside to relieve himself. The accident is believed to have occurred when the car driver lost control before his vehicle crashed into the back of the lorry,' he said in a statement today.
He said that as a result of the accident at about 5.30 am, Roslawati Mat Daud, 50, who is the wife of the driver and niece of driver Aqif Azfar Azman, 6, died at the scene.
'Aqif Azfar died on lap of his father who was in the front passenger seat,' he said.
Ismail said the car driver and five other passengers were rushed to Kuala Lipis Hospital for further treatment, while the lorry driver and his assistant were unhurt.
He said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Meanwhile, police are appealing to members of the public who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Body of pedestrian flung into river found near Jalan Ipoh crash site
KUALA LUMPUR: The body of a pedestrian who fell into a river after being hit by an out-of-control car along Jalan Ipoh, heading towards the Kepong roundabout, was found this morning. The incident, which occurred at about 11.45am yesterday, involved a Nissan Sylphy driven by a 39-year-old Bangladeshi man from the direction of the Batu Muda People's Housing Project (PPR). The vehicle is believed to have gone out of control. Meanwhile, in a Facebook post, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) said it had mobilised its rescue squad to carry out high-risk technical work to retrieve the vehicle from the river, as part of an operation to locate the missing victim. Working alongside the police, the Fire and Rescue Department, and the Civil Defence Force, the DBKL team provided technical support to lift the vehicle and assist the search operation.

Bus driver in Gerik crash claims trial
Facing the law: Mohd Amirul being escorted after pleading not guilty to 16 charges at the Gerik Magistrate's Court. — Bernama Accused pleads not guilty to all 16 charges GERIK: The bus driver involved in an accident which killed 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik this week has been slapped with 16 charges in court. Mohd Amirul Fadhil Zulkifle, 39, was charged with 15 counts of dangerous driving resulting in death and one charge of driving in a manner dangerous to the public. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges before magistrate Muhammad Firdaus Nor Azlan yesterday. Mohd Amirul allegedly committed the offences at approximately 1.15am on June 9 at KM53 of the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway, thereby causing the death of 15 UPSI students. The students who perished in the tragedy were Fakhrul Arif Rosdi, 20; Mohammad Aqil Taqiuddin Mohd Sofian, 21; Nik Amni Nadiah Nik Nor Zabir, 21; Nurul Fatihah Abu Setaman, 22; Nurul Izyanti Muhamad Azahar, 21; Sufea Adela Maslihaizan, 21; Nur Ainul Qistina Mat Ali, 21; Nur Dalila Farhana Mohamad Isma, 21; Nurly Sahirah Azman, 23; Fatin Nasrien Fadli, 22; Muhammad Mustaqim Rosde, 21; Anis Soffiyya Md Zaidi, 20; Nor Ayuni Maslan, 21; Muhammad Adib Hazim Halim, 21; and Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad, 22. The additional charge was under Section 42(1) of the same Act for reckless and dangerous driving. The court granted bail at RM19,000 in two sureties. The accused was also ordered to report weekly to the nearest police station. His driving licences were suspended pending the disposal of the case. The court then fixed July 14 for next mention to enable the accused to appoint a lawyer, Bernama reported. Perak prosecution director Muhammad Zaki Abdul Kudos and deputy public prosecutors Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani and Moganaraj Mithra appeared for the prosecution. In the crash on Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed and 33 others injured when the bus they were travelling in overturned along the highway, near Tasik Banding, Gerik.

Truck driver and assistant killed in highway crash
Fatal wreck: The damaged vehicles seen at the crash site at KM81.9 of the of the Ayer Hitam-Batu Pahat southbound stretch along the North-South Expressway. — Bernama BATU PAHAT: A lorry driver and his assistant were killed instantly in a three-vehicle collision along the North-South Expressway near here on Thursday. Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the accident occurred at KM81.9 of the Ayer Hitam-Batu Pahat southbound stretch at about 8.30am. 'A lorry transporting electronic goods crashed into the rear of another lorry carrying wood, which then collided with an oil tanker,' he said in a statement. The impact of the crash caused fatal injuries to the driver and his assistant, who were pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from the Yong Peng health clinic. They were identified as R. Pubalan, 45, from Sungai Petani, Kedah, and 35-year-old assistant R. Sivasanthiran from Bedong, Kedah. The 37-year-old driver of the wood-laden lorry sustained only minor injuries and was taken to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital. The oil tanker driver, aged 42, was unharmed. The case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
