US Court Extends Detention Of Pro-Palestinian Protest Leader Mahmoud Khalil
A U.S. judge on Friday denied Mahmoud Khalil's request to be released from detention, after federal prosecutors changed their rationale for holding the Columbia graduate student as part of its crackdown on pro-Palestinian activists.
Newark, New Jersey-based U.S. District Judge Michael Farbiarz on Wednesday said the government could not use foreign policy interests to justify Khalil's detention.
On Friday the government said it was also holding Khalil, a legal permanent resident of the United States, on a charge of immigration fraud.
In response, Farbiarz said Khalil's lawyers had not successfully argued why it was unlawful for the government to hold him on the charge, which he has denied.
The ruling marked the latest turn in Khalil's fight to be freed from a Louisiana detention center after his March arrest for involvement in the pro-Palestinian protest movement, which President Donald Trump has called antisemitic. His detention was condemned by civil rights groups as an attack on protected political speech.
Marc Van Der Hout, a lawyer for Khalil, said the government practically never detained people for immigration fraud and the Syrian-born student was being punished for opposing Israel's U.S.-backed war in Gaza following Hamas' October 2023 attack.
"Detaining someone on a charge like this is highly unusual and frankly outrageous," said Van Der Hout. "There continues to be no constitutional basis for his detention."
Farbiarz had previously suggested legal residents like Khalil were rarely detained on the basis of immigration fraud. On Friday he said Khalil should seek bail from the immigration lawyer in his case.
As lawyers for the Syrian-born activist sought his release, Kilmar Abrego Garcia, another immigrant targeted by the Trump administration, pleaded not guilty to migrant smuggling charges after his wrongful deportation.
Khalil, a graduate student at Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs, was arrested by immigration agents in the lobby of his university residence in Manhattan on March 8.
His U.S. citizen wife, Dr. Noor Abdalla, gave birth to the couple's first child while Khalil was detained in April.
Ahead of Father's Day in the U.S., a group of celebrities including actors Mahershala Ali, Mark Ruffalo and Mo Amer, called for Khalil to be freed. They also sent him a video showing the celebrities reading aloud a letter that the activist had sent to his infant son.

Kerala jeweller, aide carjacked on Salem – Kochi highway near Coimbatore; robbed of 1.25 kg gold
In yet another case of highway robbery on NH 544 (Salem – Kochi Highway), a Kerala-based jeweller and his aide were carjacked and robbed of 1.25 kg of gold at K.G. Chavadi near Coimbatore on Saturday morning. The highway robbers, who reportedly conversed in Malayalam, also took away ₹60,000 carried by the jeweller, Jaison Jacob, 55, of Thrissur. The incident took place around 5.45 a.m. at K.G. Chavadi when Mr. Jacob and his employee S. Vishnu were heading to Thrissur in a car. The duo earlier arrived at the Coimbatore Railway Station by train from Chennai, after purchasing gold, and drove towards Palakkad en route for their return journey to Thrissur. According to the police, the robbers struck at the car travelled by Mr. Jacob and Mr. Vishnu when they reached near a fuel station at K.G. Chavadi. A truck waylaid their car and a few men, who tailed the duo on another vehicle, approached the car. When Mr. Jacob and Mr. Vishnu refused to open the doors, the men broke a door glass. They subsequently got into the car and one of them drove it. The men took the gold and cash from the car, before ousting Mr. Jacob and Mr. Vishnu, after travelling for some distance, said the police. The police suspect that the robbers escaped to Kerala through another route via Velanthavalam. Meanwhile, Mr. Jacob approached the K.G. Chavadi police and sought their help. Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan visited the scene of crime and constituted special teams to trace the robbers. He said that five persons are suspected to have been involved in the robbery. 'The police have got some strong leads on the robbers and will be arresting them soon. The truck has been located,' he told The Hindu. Several incidents of highway robberies have taken place in the Tamil Nadu side of NH 544 close to Kerala border in the past.

MAGA splits over Trump's backing of Israel
US President Donald Trump suggested that Israel's strikes could help his administration make a nuclear deal with Iran. TOI correspondent from Washington: MAGA isolationists are up in arms against US involvement in the Middle-East even as President Donald Trump has ostensibly bowed to pressure from the powerful pro-Israel lobby to throw Washington's support behind the Jewish state. Several Trump-supporting MAGA surrogates, including conservative commentator Tucker Carlson, former Trump aide Steve Bannon, and Republican lawmaker Marjorie Taylor-Greene, have broken ranks to oppose American involvement, saying it is betrayal of Trump's pledge to keep US out of foreign wars. Carlson has been vocal in his criticism, accusing Trump of being 'complicit' in Israel's attack on Iran and arguing that US funding and weapons supplied to Israel, which Trump boasted about on Truth Social, has placed Washington at the center of the conflict. "The real divide isn't between people who support Israel and people who support Iran or the Palestinians. The real divide is between warmongers and peacemakers," Carlson said on Friday, bluntly naming former Fox News colleague Sean Hannity, commentator Mark Levin, media baron Rupert Murdoch, and Jewish billionaires Ike Perlmutter and Miriam Adelson, among the provocateurs. Steve Bannon, a former Trump White House aide, also urged Trump to keep US out of the war, while Congresswoman Green questioned if Iran and its proxies are a danger to US national interests, saying "I don't think we should be fighting wars on behalf of israel...I have never seen a Houthi, or however you pronounce it, in my life..." However, many MAGA Trump acolytes, including Hannity, Senator Lindsey GRaham, conservative radio host Mark Levin, and social media gadabout Laura Loomed, backed the President's support for Israel because of its pursuit of nuclear weapons, although Trump's intelligence czar Tulsi Gabbard, another anti-war figure, testified in March that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon. 'The IC [Intelligence Community] continues to assess that Iran is not building a nuclear weapon and Supreme Leader Khamenei has not authorized the nuclear weapons program he suspended in 2003,' Gabbard said, while noting, however, that Iran's enriched uranium stockpile is at its highest levels, unprecedented for a state without nuclear weapons. While hardcore white Christian nationalists in MAGA are typically anti-Jew ("Jews will not replace us," is one of the chants heard in their rallies), the broader MAGA base is distinctly anti-war, blaming US involvement in foreign wars under both Republican and Democratic administrations among reasons the country has racked up a massive $ 36 trillion debt. Polling by some MAGA principals shows isolationist sentiment is still strong in the MAGA base, and President Trump's support for Israel is not shared among the rank and file.
