Hope student's artwork to be displayed at prestigious art museum in Arkansas

HOPE, Ark. (KTAL/KMSS) – A primary school student in Hope will soon see her artwork displayed at a local college's art museum.
Earlier this year, Brigit Arroyo, a student at William Jefferson Clinton Primary, submitted an artwork she called 'Sun and Moon' to an art contest for K-12 students. The contest was sponsored by the Windgate Museum of Art and focused on nature art inspired by Mississippi Artist Walter Anderson.
Windgate Museum of Nature is located at Hendrix College.
More than 600 entries poured in from across the state. Approximately 100 artworks were selected, and Arroyo's artwork was among them.
The Windgate Museum of Art at Hendrix College will begin displaying the winning paintings on Feb. 1.
Ann Waller is a teacher at Clinton Primary. She heard about the contest and wondered if there was something she could do to encourage students to enter.
Last September, Waller launched an after-school program to help students enter the contest. She began staying after school on Mondays and Tuesdays to help encourage students to work on submissions for the Windgate Museum contest.
'I knew this was a pretty prestigious event and tricky to have a student get recognized,' said Waller.
But Waller was still determined to help students enter.
'I sent in around 10 completed submissions right before Christmas break and waited,' she said.
Fourth-grader Brigit Arroyo's artwork was chosen.
The public can encourage young artists in Arkansas by attending the art show's opening reception at the Windgate Museum of Art on the Hendrix College Campus. The event takes place on Feb. 1 at 12:00 p.m.
