FIEO worried over US tariff hikes on steel, aluminium
New Delhi: The Federation of Indian Export Organisations ( FIEO ) Saturday raised concerns about potential disruption to India's steel and aluminium exports to the US after President Donald Trump's announcement of a plan to double import tariffs on steel and aluminium to 50% from 25%. They particularly fear that the exports of value-added and finished steel products and auto-components, stainless steel pipes, and structural steel components could be hurt. This potential increase comes under Section 232 of the US Trade Expansion Act of 1962, a law that allows the president to impose tariffs or other trade restrictions if imports are deemed a threat to national security. "These products are part of India's growing engineering exports, and higher duties could erode our price competitiveness in the American market," said SC Ralhan, president, FIEO. The US is among the top destinations for Indian steel manufacturers, who have been gradually increasing market share through high-quality production and competitive pricing. Exporters said that though the decision stems from domestic policy considerations in the US, such sharp increases in tariffs send discouraging signals to global trade and manufacturing supply chains. Chadha added that since the UK has been given exemption from Section 232, the same exemption should also be given with TRQ restrictions to India. Probe ordered into Kedar ‘construction violations's
Dehradun: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has directed the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board to investigate complaints of environmental violations linked to ongoing construction near the Kedarnath temple. The directive follows a complaint filed by Noida-based Amit Gupta, who raised concerns about unchecked construction activities disrupting the area and endangering pilgrims. Gupta alleged that construction materials, including sand, have been dumped openly right opposite the main temple, while unattended iron bars at the newly constructed Sangam Ghat are obstructing river flow and contributing to pollution. "There are also protruding steel rods posing a serious safety hazard. Pilgrims are facing inconvenience due to these issues," he told TOI. Gupta added, "Small crushers and stone cutting units are working continuously on the river side and even on the 2013 flood route which is not only impacting the sensitive ecology of the area but also polluting the water flowing near it. India has prolonged the duty-free import period for yellow peas until March 31, 2026, effective immediately. This decision, outlined in a recent government order, grants traders an extended window for duty-free imports. Remove Ads ( Originally published on May 30, 2025 ) As part of efforts to cool the prices of pulses, India has extended permission for duty-free imports of yellow peas until March 31, 2026 with immediate effect, according to a government order issued late on South Asian nation is the world's biggest importer of yellow peas, which it imports mainly from Canada and the Indian government extended the free import policy for Yellow peas for three months in march 2025, which was set to expire on May 31, the free import policy for yellow peas was set to expire on February 28, government had initially allowed the duty-free import of yellow peas in December 2023 and subsequently extended it thrice till February to trade data, India is estimated to have imported 6.63 million tonnes of pulses in 2024, compared with 3.31 million tonnes in 2023. The previous record of imports, 6.27 million tonnes, was registered in 2017. Yellow peas, imports of which were made duty free in 2023, had the largest share in the import basket of pulses at 2.9 million tonnes, or 45% of the total. India had not imported yellow peas in the previous year.
