PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Beginning early Monday, road construction will shutter North University Street as it intersects with West Pioneer Parkway, according to the city's public works department.
The closure is necessary as part of the Pioneer Parkway and University Street Intersection Reconstruction Project and is expected to last five weeks, weather permitting, the department said in a news release.
The closures will begin at 7 a.m. May 12
According to the city, both northbound lanes and the left turn lane on North University will be closed at the West Pioneer Parkway intersection. Traffic headed north on University will only be able to turn right onto Pioneer Parkway.
Traffic going south of University before the intersection will have to follow the marked detour using Altorfer Drive. Business access, south of Altorfer Drive, will be maintained, the city said.
Both left turn lanes on Pioneer Parkway that would send vehicles onto University will be closed.
The city urges motorists to use marked detours. Southbound University traffic should use Altorfer Drive to Allen Road, head south on Allen then west on Willow Knolls Drive. Westbound traffic on Pioneer Parkway needing to travel south on University should drive to Allen Road, then go west on Willow Knolls Drive.
Major delays can be expected in the area. Drivers should utilize the marked detour route and use extra caution in the area, the public works department said.
