Montreal Alouettes aiming to continue their winning ways versus Ottawa Redblacks

Toronto Stara day ago

There has been no place quite like TD Place for the Montreal Alouettes.
Montreal (1-0) visits the Ottawa Redblacks (0-1) on Friday night. The Alouettes have not only won their last eight head-to-head meetings with their East Division rival but are riding a 10-game win streak at TD Place.
And there's the matter of Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander sporting a 5-0 record as a CFL starter. Bo Levi Mitchell, currently of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, was the last quarterback to start 5-0 when he was with the Calgary Stampeders.
Alexander, in his first full season as Montreal's starter, was 19-of-26 passing for 205 yards with a touchdown and interception in last week's season-opening 28-10 home win over Toronto. He also ran four times for 50 yards.

Montreal converted on 14-of-24 second-down opportunities while rushing for 163 yards on 26 carries (6.3-yard average). That's noteworthy as last week all four opening-week winners were not only at home but also rushed for more yards than their opponents.
A stout Montreal defence did its part, holding Toronto to 276 net offensive yards while forcing three turnovers (two interceptions, fumble recovery) in the contest.
Ottawa opened its season with a 31-26 road loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Redblacks quarterback Dru Brown threw for 413 yards and two touchdowns, becoming just the fourth player ever to have 400 or more yards passing in three straight regular-season games, dating back to 2024.
Brown is the first to do so since Calgary's Doug Flutie in '93 but has been limited in practice this week with a hip ailment.
Justin Hardy (eight catches, 133 yards, TD) and Bralon Addison (eight catches, 112 yards) were Brown's favourite targets. Veteran Eugene Lewis had five receptions for 57 yards and a touchdown in his first game with the Redblacks.
Lewis has recorded TD grabs in nine straight games dating back to last season with Edmonton. If he can do so versus Montreal, Lewis would tie Terry Evanshen's CFL record of 10 consecutive contests with a touchdown reception.

Ottawa was a CFL-best 7-1-1 last season at TD Place.
Pick: Montreal.

B.C. Lions versus Winnipeg Blue Bombers (Thursday night)
At Winnipeg, the Bombers open their season minus starter Zach Collaros, who will serve the one-game suspension he received last month from the CFL for failing to respond to an off-season drug-testing request. Veteran QB Chris Streveler starts but guard Pat Neufeld remains a game-time decision. Nathan Rourke was the league's offensive player of the week after passing for 324 yards and three TDs in leading B.C. (1-0) past Edmonton 31-14 but he's 0-3 lifetime versus the Bombers with three TDs and five interceptions. Lions head coach Buck Pierce returns to Manitoba, where he spent 10 seasons as an assistant and won two Grey Cups before being hired by B.C.
Pick: B.C.
—-
Calgary Stampeders versus Toronto Argonauts (Saturday afternoon)
At Toronto, the Argos (0-1) are 27-7 at BMO Field under head coach Ryan Dinwiddie, including 16-2 the past two seasons. But Calgary (1-0) is the only team Dinwiddie has a losing record against (3-4) and Stamps head coach/GM Dave Dickenson is 12-3 all-time versus the defending champions. Nick Arbuckle is expected to make a second straight start for Toronto ahead of Chad Kelly (leg). Stamps' starter Vernon Adams Jr. is 2-5 versus the Argos but has 14 TD passes in those matchups. He threw for 284 yards in last week's 38-26 home win over Hamilton with two interceptions.
Pick: Toronto.
—-
Saskatchewan Roughriders versus Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Saturday night)
At Hamilton, Mitchell again chases his 100th career regular-season win. He was 31-of-50 passing for 304 yards and a TD last week in Calgary. Over his last six starts, Mitchell is averaging 346 yards passing and is 12-6 versus the Riders. But last week the Ticats defence had no answer for the Stampeders' ground game (158 yards on 31 carries, three Dedrick Mills' TDs). Trevor Harris threw for 277 yards and two TDs in leading Saskatchewan (1-0) past Ottawa last week and is 9-5 versus Hamilton. This week, the club signed veteran running back Ka'Deem Carey, who ran for 1,060 yards last season with Toronto before surprisingly being released after training camp.
Pick: Saskatchewan.
NOTE — Last week's B.C.-Edmonton game marked just the 12th time in 5,395 CFL games that both teams started Canadian quarterbacks (Rourke for the Lions, Tre Ford for Elks).
Last week: 3-1.

Early Test: Redblacks without QB Dru Brown as Alouettes visit TD Place

Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Matt Shiltz (16) evades a tackle by Montreal Alouettes defensive lineman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund (91) during first half preseason CFL football action in Montreal on Saturday, May 24, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Christinne Muschi OTTAWA — The Ottawa Redblacks are facing a tough test just two weeks into the CFL season. Ottawa (0-1-0) will be without starting quarterback Dru Brown for its home opener against the Montreal Alouettes (1-0-0) Friday night. Brown suffered a hip injury late in last Thursday's season-opener against the Saskatchewan Roughriders. The team is hopeful Brown will be ready to return to action next week. In the meantime, Matt Shiltz will make his first start for the Redblacks against the Alouettes, who opened their season with a 28-10 win over the visiting Toronto Argonauts. The Redblacks signed Shiltz over the winter to shore up under centre. He'll work with backups Dustin Crum and Tyrie Adams on Friday night. '(Shiltz) has great experience,' head coach Bob Dyce said. 'Any time you have someone who's played in this game, started important key games, that's invaluable. And, you know, he's got a great command of the huddle.' Shiltz, who spent the first five seasons of his career in Montreal, will have some familiarity with the opponent, but doesn't see it as factor. 'You think about it a little bit, but honestly it'' the next game on the schedule and it's your opportunity,' said Shiltz. 'Being away from Montreal for, I think it's three seasons, it's there but it's not something that I'm really focusing on.' The 32-year-old Shiltz has been taking first-team reps all week in preparation for Friday and believes if he can do his job the receivers will take care of the rest. 'They've all had that success, and you've just got to put (the ball) in the vicinity, and you can trust that they're going to make some plays,' Shiltz said. 'So, it's all on you.' One of those receivers he'll be looking to connect with is Eugene Lewis, who will make his home debut after signing with Ottawa in the off-season. The two were teammates in Montreal and Lewis is looking forward to reigniting the connection. 'He's probably one of the only quarterbacks that I've had multiple touchdowns in one game with,' said Lewis. 'So, I know Shiltz, I know what he's capable of.' Shiltz may feel a little bit of pressure to get Lewis the ball. A touchdown Friday night would mark Lewis's 10th consecutive game with a TD, tying Terry Evanshen for the longest streak in league history. Lewis says going after the streak is a bit of a balancing act. 'Obviously, as an individual, as a person, as somebody, with what I'm doing in my career, yes, I really want this,' Lewis said. 'I know God has this plan for me, and it'll be hard to get here again.' Lewis says the main focus has to be winning the game, but he believes that if everyone does what their supposed to then he stands a good chance of a record reception. The Redblacks will also be without starting safety Alonzo Addae. The 27-year-old suffered a season-ending elbow/tricep injury against the Roughriders. It's an unfortunate turn of events for the Pickering, Ont., native whose season was cut short last year by a knee injury. Canadian Charlie Ringland will step in for Addae. The Redblacks will also need to be much more disciplined after taking 13 penalties that cost them 126 yards in their opening game. --- ALOUETTES (1-0-0) AT REDBLACKS (0-1-0) Friday, TD Place Stadium END THE STREAK: Montreal holds an eight-game winning streak over the Redblacks and have won 10 straight games at TD Place dating back to August 2018 RECORD MATCHING: Alexandre Gagné of the Alouettes had a great start to 2025 when he recorded a CFL-record-tying seven special teams tackles. He now has 111 for his career to rank tied for 34 all-time. His seven tackles set a new Alouettes record. HARDY HURRIES: Hardy tied for the most receiving yards last week with 133 on eight catches. He's riding a streak of five straight 100-yard games. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 12, 2025. Lisa Wallace, The Canadian Press

Canadian Grand Prix fans stuck paying turbocharged prices for accommodation

MONTREAL — Paula Wadden has been a huge Formula One fan ever since she got hooked on the Netflix show 'Drive to Survive' a few years ago. Article content But the Halifax-area health-care worker says watching the Grand Prix in Montreal this weekend comes with high-octane prices. Article content Article content The Montreal hotel where she's spending the first part of the week doubles in price for the weekend. Instead, she'll spend the weekend at a hotel outside the city, near the airport, for about $600 a night. Article content 'The tickets (prices) are OK, it's the accommodation and the means that are getting expensive,' she said Tuesday in Old Montreal. 'I don't know how the average Joe can afford it.' Article content Article content Wadden said the trip, which she's taking with her daughter and her daughter's partner, will cost $6,000 to $7,000. And that's despite the switch in hotels and the decision to save money by driving the 12 hours from Halifax rather than flying. Article content While looking up hotels online, she said she saw even more eye-watering hotel prices ranging between $1,200 to more than $2,000 a night, as well as $4,000-per night Airbnbs. The Grand Prix is Montreal's biggest tourist event, expected to attract some 350,000 visitors and generate $162 million for the city, according to the head of Tourisme Montreal. Yves Lalumiere estimates average hotel room prices on Grand Prix weekend at $600 to $800 per night — although some wealthy CEOs will pay $8,000 for a suite. Article content 'This year's prices will probably stabilize quite a bit, maybe a two to three per cent increase over the previous year,' he said in an interview. 'But the last five years I've seen an increase year after year, and a substantial increase as well.' Article content A ticket package for the three race days starts at $360, according to the Canadian Grand Prix website — though well-off fans can pay much more. Packages with perks such as VIP concierge service, reservations at popular restaurants and parties, and access to areas such as pit lanes and paddocks can run in the tens of thousands of dollars. Article content However, Lalumiere noted that the city also offers plenty of free entertainment, including a Grand Prix party on Crescent Street. And he said hotel room prices are still 'very competitive,' especially for those paying in U.S. dollars or euros. Article content Crowds, meanwhile, are not only growing but also becoming more diverse, he said. Article content 'I think F1 has done a great job in selling the sport over the media,' Lalumiere said. 'And, therefore, now you're attracting a lot more ladies, you're attracting a lot more young people as well to the race.' Article content Black-and-white checkered banners were already fluttering on St-Paul Street in Old Montreal on Tuesday, as tourists lined up to photograph a Formula One car on display outside Max Bitton's racing-themed store, Fanabox. Bitton said he brought in the car as a gift to fans after last year's Grand Prix, which was marred by mishaps on and off the track that left a bad taste in some fans' mouths.
