Fort Worth ISD sees reading gains on STAAR test after months of struggles
Fort Worth ISD is celebrating signs of academic progress following a difficult year marked by accountability concerns and performance challenges.
New STAAR results released this week show reading scores have improved across grades three through eight, surpassing the district's literacy goal by four percentage points.
"We're very happy to see gains across the board in literacy, which has definitely been a focus this school year," Superintendent Dr. Karen Molinar said.
District faces recent scrutiny
CBS News Texas
The district has faced increased scrutiny in recent months. In April, it received a "D" accountability rating for the first time, based on 2023 data. In May, state leaders raised the possibility of a takeover. However, the latest scores offer a sense of momentum.
"I am proud, not only of our school district, but our city for standing behind FWISD," Molinar said. "Everyone has a goal, and that's students in mind."
Math gains and gaps
In addition to literacy improvements, fourth-grade math scores also showed gains.
"The data shows us exactly where we already knew we had gaps, especially in our math area," Molinar said. "We pivoted early on with small group interventions for identified students and intensive campus-level support."
Statewide trends mirror local results
Statewide trends mirror those in Fort Worth. Students across Texas continue to show growth in reading, but more than half remain below grade level in math—a concern for long-term academic success.
Despite the positive momentum, some experts remain cautious.
"It was really encouraging to see continued growth in reading," said Gabe Grantham, policy advisor for the nonprofit Texas 2036. "But more than half our students are below grade level in math, which is just not okay when we're thinking about how core those skills are for academic and post-academic success."
New academic strategies launched
In response, Fort Worth ISD is launching an aggressive academic redesign. Plans include more instructional time for middle school students, a new phonics program for kindergarten through second grade, and enhanced dyslexia support tools.
"If we want to talk about obstacles, it's the implementation — the consistent implementation — of this new framework," Molinar said. "And we are not going to allow anyone not to implement that on a consistent basis."
Focus on long-term progress
While district leaders are encouraged by the gains, they acknowledge that sustained improvement is critical, especially as they work to avoid state intervention.
"Our scores show the commissioner that we are headed in the right direction," Molinar said. "And we've already been aggressive about putting action steps in place to address the student issues."
Grantham echoed that sentiment.
"We want to make sure we never take our foot off the gas," he said. "I don't think you can look at the scores and say we've done enough as a state."

Friends, family and neighbors remember 12-year-old girl killed in Aston, Pennsylvania, scooter accident
Friends, family and neighbors gathered in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday to remember the 12-year-old girl killed in a scooter accident over the weekend. Thousands packed Ridley Park Middle School to honor Abigail Gillon, the 6th grader who was killed in a scooter accident in Aston on Saturday. Abigail and her best friend, 11-year-old Isabella Jones, were riding an electric scooter on Saturday when they hit a curb and fell. They were then hit by a car. It happened at Lehr Boulevard near Concord Road, where a memorial of flowers and balloons now stands. Both girls were rushed to the hospital. Abby, as she's known, died from her injuries. Courtesy photo Isabella remains in the hospital. Abby's next-door neighbor spoke about her friend, who loved cheerleading, swimming and her friends and family. "Whether she was cheering on her team or gliding through the water, she did it with all her heart," neighbor Brianna Newmiller said. "She cared deeply for her family, friends and classmates, and community. She was the kind of person who showed up for others, who made you feel seen and who brought joy just by being herself." Abby had been on life support since the accident on Saturday. Before she died, she gave one last gift by donating her organs through the Gift of Life. "This morning Abigail had her Hero Walk down the halls of Dupont Hospital. Through the gift of life she was able to save another 12-year-old girl's life by donating her liver, pancreas and both kidneys," Newmiller told the crowd. Before the ceremony, Abby's mom signed a heart balloon for her daughter, which she released to the heavens with a sea of others in a tribute to a young life gone too soon. "Today as we release these balloons, we do so with heavy hearts but also full ones, full of the love she gave us, the memories she gave us and the bond we all share through knowing her. Abigail, we miss you, we miss you, we love you and we will never forget you," Newmiller said. "You will always be a part of us."

Young man pulled from Lake Michigan at Illinois Beach State Park
Crews pulled a young man from Lake Michigan at Illinois Beach State Park near the Wisconsin state line Tuesday evening. Several fire departments were called to the Camp Logan area of the state park, according to Zion Fire Chief Justin Stried. They learned that a man was unaccounted for in the water. A Winthrop Harbor Fire Department diver got into the water quickly, and within about 10 minutes, she located the man about 12 feet below the surface. The diver got the man into a rescue boat, Stried said. Winthrop Harbor Fire Department The man, who is about 19 years old, was taken to an area hospital — initially in serious condition. "This is our fifth call out this season to the water in Lake Michigan. This is the first drowning from a swimmer," said Winthrop Harbor Fire Chief Rocco Campanella. "The other calls have been kayak in distress — people fall off a boat or fall off a pier." Campanella added that his department is not sufficiently equipped for some rescues — for example, it does not have, and cannot afford, a boat to handle significant waves. Campanella and Stried added that Lake County municipal fire departments do not have jurisdiction over Lake Michigan — but respond to emergencies there nevertheless. Campanella said fire departments in Lake County depend on their neighbors to make things work in the event of an emergency — and have trained together for water rescues. The dangers of Lake Michigan have been on display in Chicago lately too. On Father's Day, Lake Michigan took a dangerous turn for a father and his teenage sons out for a jet ski ride. Video showed a father and sons in the water after the jet ski flipped. Some boaters came to their rescue soon afterward.
