Sands and thunderstorms induced by African heat are set to hit Europe

As recently reported, Europe is set to share in the intensity of Africa's harsh climate conditions, specifically from the Northern part of the African continent.
Harsh climate conditions from Northern Africa are impacting parts of Europe, with heatwaves bringing sand and thunderstorms.
Regions like Castile and Leon in Spain and northern Portugal have been issued an Amber storm alert.
Cities like Rome, London, and Paris are also expected to experience elevated temperatures and variable severe weather.
Some parts of Europe are set to receive sand and thunderstorms from the heatwave migrating to the continent from Northern Africa.

The UK and France are also expected to experience their hottest temperatures further north on Friday. Rome will have peaks of 36°C (97°F), London 27°C, and Paris 31°C.
Over the next several days, France and the UK may see lightning, hail, and heavy rain as a result of storm clouds created by the heat pushing moisture high into the atmosphere.
According to the UK Met Office, as reported by Bloomberg, the storms could drop up to 40 millimeters (1.6 inches) of rain in a few hours, which is more than half of the total for June of the previous year.
'These storms are going to have to be high energy,' Alex Deakin, a meteorologist with the UK Met Office, said in a forecast briefing. 'They will drop a lot of rain in a short space of time.'
MetDesk predicts that powerful storms will sweep up a heavy cloud of Saharan dust, which might cover vehicles and buildings and interfere with solar energy generation.
This heat wave follows a period of unstable and wet weather in northwest Europe, which failed to balance off an unusually warm and arid spring.
According to a recent assessment from the Copernicus satellite program, rainfall and soil moisture levels in the area have reached historic lows.
The ongoing weather events illustrate the increasing interconnection of global climate systems, as well as the far-reaching consequences of environmental changes in one region on others.
As Europe prepares for increasingly severe weather patterns caused by North African heat and Saharan dust, it highlights the critical need for adaptive measures, enhanced forecasting, and more investment in climate resilience throughout the continent.
According to the statistics, spring river flows in Europe were at their lowest level since 1992, though the southern and parts of northwestern Russia had extremely substantial amounts of rain from March to May.

Updated at 12:30 p.m. ET Wednesday, June 11, 2025 The atmosphere over the tropical Atlantic continues to be hostile to tropical development. High pressure, which is often sprawled across the Atlantic, has persistently nosed well into the Gulf. That high has blocked any tropical systems from turning north and caused persistent dry weather across Florida. Occasional disturbances have moved off Africa and through the tropical moisture belt south of the high-pressure system, as we expect this time of year. However, the unusual breadth and strength of the high has directed systems with the potential to develop into the Eastern Pacific. Two storms have already formed and another is likely. The second factor keeping the Atlantic quiet is Saharan dust. The flow around the high-pressure system has opened a persistent channel for the dusty air to spread west into the Caribbean and occasionally to Florida and into the Gulf. Artificial Intelligence Among New Tech Shaping Forecasts During 2025 Hurricane Season The ocean water temperatures across the tropical Atlantic between the Caribbean and Africa have returned to normal this year after two years of being extremely warm. That means that, unlike last year, no storms are unlikely to form east of the Caribbean until the water warms up later in the hurricane season. Water temperatures in the Caribbean Sea and the southern Gulf are always warm enough for tropical development, and this year they are even warmer than normal. A disturbance has to trigger a system to organize, however, and the dust and the storm track into the Pacific have kept the lid on any development. Computer forecast models, including the new AI models, are showing a slight chance that something might develop in the far western Gulf next week, but the chances are very low. Until the sprawling high-pressure system breaks down, tropical development is unlikely. The odds favor the Atlantic staying quiet through next week, at least. The delayed start to the hurricane season is not unusual. About a third of the time since 1950, the first Atlantic storm was named after June 15. And it's important to note that the eventual busyness of the hurricane season is not related to how it starts. In 2004, which was a gangbuster year with four hurricanes impacting Florida, the first storm to get a name in the tropics was Bonnie, and that wasn't until August 9. Alex formed on August 1, but in the far North Atlantic. So that wasn't related to the season's tropical developments. All indications are that this hurricane season will get busy once it gets going. Researchers at Colorado State University updated their seasonal prediction today but did not change their numbers from their April forecast. They are still calling for 17 named storms, 9 of them hurricanes, with 4 of them reaching Category 3 or above. Updated 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Forecast Maintains Above-average Predictions Fueled By Warm Ocean Temps Hurricane season forecasts are issued by a variety of companies and agencies around the world. If you look at a map showing the tracks of every tropical depression, subtropical storm, tropical storm and hurricane (called typhoons in the Western Pacific basin and cyclones in the Southern Hemisphere), you will notice something peculiar. There is a complete absence of storm tracks west of South America and very few tracks east of the continent. Why is that? The waters are too cold The lack of activity off the west coast of South America is primarily because of cold waters, AccuWeather Lead Hurricane Expert Alex DaSilva says. The Peru Current in the southeastern Pacific Ocean brings cold water unusually far northward along the west coast, too cold for tropical storms and hurricanes. Water temperatures need to be in at least 79 F (26 C) for tropical storms to develop and strengthen. Wind shear is stronger in these regions Another factor is higher wind shear, which tears apart most tropical storms before they can strengthen. Wind shear is particularly high in the Southern Hemisphere, due to a larger temperature gradient. "The waters off Brazil, in the Southern Atlantic, are not as cold, thanks to warmer water coming down from the north, but the wind shear is still too strong to support many tropical storms," DaSilva explained. The 'wave train' is missing in the South Atlantic Another missing piece of the puzzle in the South Atlantic is the African wave train, which pushes clusters of thunderstorms off the continent and over the North Atlantic during hurricane season. These storms can then go on to become a tropical depression, storm or hurricane. "Approximately 80 percent of major North Atlantic hurricanes develop in this area. This conveyor belt of tropical seedlings is absent from the southern Atlantic," DaSilva said. Only one hurricane is known to have traversed this basin Only one hurricane in recorded history has formed in the South Atlantic. In 2004, an unnamed storm, locally called Catarina, formed off the coast of Brazil. The storm made landfall near northeastern Rio Grande do Sul with 100-mph winds, killing three people and causing $300 million (2004 USD) in damage. According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, only two additional unnamed tropical storms ever roamed the southern Atlantic basin, in 2010 and 2011. More South Atlantic storms likely missed by official records Other storms shown on the map above are not recognized in NOAA's database. Many of these are subtropical storms, which possess some tropical characteristics but are not fully developed tropical systems. The map also includes tropical storms named by the Brazilian Navy Hydrographic Center's Marine Meteorological Service (HCMM). The HCMM has been naming subtropical and tropical storms off the Brazilian coast since 2011, but its threshold for naming storms may not be as rigorous as in the rest of the world, so it may name more storms than other agencies, such as NOAA. On the other hand, because the records in the other basins stretch back much longer, 75 to 150 years, there are likely many storms in the South Atlantic that were never tracked. Out of roughly two dozen storms named by HCMM in the last 15 years, fewer than 10 of the named storms tracked since 2011 have made landfall on the South American coast. You may also notice that no storm has ever crossed the equator. This is because, at 0 degrees latitude, the Coriolis force is essentially zero, making it impossible for a tropical system to cross over from one hemisphere to another.
