'See Ya!' Fans Speculating Which Steelers Wanted Pickens Out
In so many ways, the Pittsburgh Steelers' 2024 season was similar to the years that preceded it – a rudderless offense falling short before the team could escape mediocrity. But the Steelers' latest campaign was defined by two storylines: the turn to quarterback Russell Wilson and away from Justin Fields, and the weekly antics of receiver George Pickens.
For better or worse, Pittsburgh won't be dealing with Wilson or Fields in 2025 (although they'll be facing off against the latter in Week 1). The Steelers lost both to free agency in March; in May, they made the decision to jettison Pickens, too.

The receiver was dealt to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2026 third-round pick and a 2027 Day 3 pick swap, setting back the offense in a play to find the next franchise quarterback. Pittsburgh making that trade helped ensure its place in the middle of the conference. In the weeks since, it seems that an offseason Pickens departure was rather inevitable.
Steelers fans are saying the same thing about the latest Pickens rumor, that it wasn't just the coaching staff that had grown tired of his behavior, but his teammates, too.
"There's a lot of guys in that defense—even the offense," Mark Kaboly said on 93.7 the Fan. "There were probably a couple guys that you would be shocked at, that I did hear after the fact. They were pretty much saying, 'See ya.' They didn't want anything to do with him."
The receiver was never far from controversy throughout his Pittsburgh tenure. He had grown frustrated with his targets at different times and had a tendency to take himself out of games that saw him start slowly. His proclivity for unnecessary roughness penalties made him a target for opposing defensive backs, aiming to get in his head early and incite a flagrant foul.

Few will doubt Pickens' talent, but his tendency to become a detriment defined his time with the Steelers. After trading for Seattle Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf, the writing was on the wall. And without an extension, moving him and recouping strong value became a priority.
We can't say for sure which Steelers (if any) vouched for his return or rooted for his departure. It's clear, however, that Pickens' behavior wasn't just a burden to his coaches and a storyline for fans.

The Steelers are looking to add playmakers and pass catchers, and Davis is as good of a bounce-back candidate as they can get. Davis earned the nickname "Big Game Gabe" during his tenure in Buffalo. He had a number of standout performances for the Bills, namely in the playoffs. Davis tallied 201 yards and four touchdowns on just eight receptions, having one of the greatest playoff performances in Bills' history. His heroics in the divisional game marked just the ninth time a player has recorded 200+ receiving yards in a playoff game, and the first time a receiver has hauled in four touchdowns. Pitt QB Eli Holstein shaves his head in solidarity with multi-organ transplant patient
A star of Pittsburgh's other big football team made a special visit to a patient at UPMC Children's Hospital on Friday. Pitt Panthers quarterback Eli Holstein took the time to visit Julia Espinosa, a multi-organ transplant patient. Because of her procedures, Julia has lost 95% of her hair and decided to shave her head. So in solidarity, and to support the fight she's put up, Eli decided to shave his head along with hers. He told KDKA-TV that it was the least he could do to show support. "It's something that's, you know, a big stepping stone in her treatment and process getting better, and we just wanted to come out here and help her, and I wanted to show her that she's not alone," Holstein said. "Pitt football's behind her, the whole Pitt community is also behind her, so I know that put a smile on her face, and I was happy to do that." Julia is originally from Seattle, but her family moved to the Pittsburgh area in 2022 because her doctors felt Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh was the best option in the country for her care. She also served as an honorary captain at a Pitt home game last season.

Henry Davis hit a tie-breaking solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday after the slumping Phillies placed star first baseman Bryce Harper on the injured list before the game with right wrist inflammation. Davis hit his fourth home run of the season and second in as many games to left-center off Ranger Suarez (4-1) on a first-pitch changeup to snap a 1-1 tie. The Pirates won for the third time in four games and can sweep the three-game series on Sunday. The Phillies' lone run came on Kyle Schwarber's 20th homer with one out in the first inning off Andrew Heaney. Philadelphia has lost eight of its last nine games after winning 12 of 13.
