New York City installs bike traffic lights to improve cyclist safety
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — Bicyclists are being reminded to stop at the red light in the bike lane.
The New York City Department of Transportation has now added a small traffic light for bikes on Third Avenue and East 69th Street. More will be installed in the coming weeks.

The signals are five feet off the ground at the cyclist's eye level. The city DOT Commissioner said they 'have proven elsewhere to increase safety as well as cyclist compliance with traffic laws.'
NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said, 'These new traffic signals for cyclists complement our green wave traffic timing, the next natural step in making sure the thousands of cyclists who use this street every day can keep both themselves and the many pedestrians crossing Third Avenue safe. We are working every day to make our streets safer and to make it easier for New Yorkers to get around our city.'
Alexa Sledge, with Transportation Alternatives, told PIX11 News, 'It brings New York City into compliance with best practices when it comes to how we design our streets, how we design our intersections, how we design our light cycles. Having it so these lights go on and easier to see is the best practice, is the best step forward for New York City, and we're really excited to see it.'
NYC DOT plans to return to the corridor this year to deliver similar bike and bus lane upgrades to Third Avenue's northern terminus, from East 96th to East 128th streets.

NYS to offer free college education to some New Yorkers starting in the fall
NEW YORK (PIX11) – The state is offering free community college education to some adult New Yorkers starting this fall, according to Gov. Kathy Hochul. SUNY Reconnect helps residents get a two-year degree in more than 170 fields including health care, cybersecurity, manufacturing and more. Students can apply to the program through the Fashion Institute of Technology, SUNY Nassau, Suffolk County Community College, SUNY Rockland, SUNY Westchester and other upstate community colleges associated with SUNY. More Local News New York state residents between 25 to 55 years old without a college degree and who plan on studying full-time or part-time in an eligible program can get a free education, according to SUNY's website. Students are not required to work for the state after they complete their program. LIRR service resumes after electrical fire in Grand Central Madison
NEW YORK (PIX11) — Long Island Railroad trains are back on schedule after an electrical fire broke out in a tunnel at Grand Central Madison Tuesday morning, officials said. Authorities responded to the incident at 8:15 a.m., and it took several hours and more than 100 firefighters to contain the smoky tunnel, according to FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker. The heavy smoke conditions were in the basement of the LIRR tracks, officials said. 'There was zero visibility down there,' Tucker said. Three firefighters and a civilian suffered non-life-threatening injuries, according to the FDNY. All Grand Central-bound trains were diverted to Penn Station or Jamaica due to the incident, according to the MTA. The trains were back on schedule at around 2:40 p.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Neighbors track progress on issues on the block

A group of neighbors in Brooklyn has organized their own team to keep the pressure on officials, agencies, and property owners. More Local News They're currently working on empty buildings, abandoned lots, trash, and pests. The Better Block Project finds strength, encouragement, and energy in fellow neighbors. They call 311 and set meetings with city agencies and elected officials. They track and post the developments, or the lack of developments, on the group's new website. 8 months ago, PIX11 profiled some members working to address issues at a vacant building on Fulton Street. The city and building owner have taken some measures. For the Better Block Project, the goal is always to follow up. Neighbors are welcome to participate across the city.
