Residents ‘hug' bowling green in protest against planned flats

Telegraph06-05-2025

Residents near a bowling green have formed a 120-person chain 'hugging' the space as they fight plans to build a block of flats on it.
Scores of residents in Mount Florida, Glasgow, are opposing proposals to replace it with 32 apartments.
The developer is attempting to turn what it claims is 'brownfield' land into housing.
But residents say the grass pitch is the only greenery accessible to them.
'Clinging on'
On Saturday, they formed a chain to 'hug' the bowling green and in a protest aimed at showing they were 'clinging' on to it.
'We are clinging on to this green space, desperately trying,' said Nicola Smith, chairman of the Mount Florida Community Trust.
She is leading the local resistance to the proposals.
'It's right in the heart of our community, right in front of our eyes,' Ms Smith said. 'It's just very, very sad that it's not available to the community.
'Are you out of your mind to build on that space? It's our only green area. There are other places that could be built on, even within the boundaries of Mount Florida.
'We want access to this. The argument that we didn't have access to it before because it was privately owned, frankly, does not hold water, as it doesn't mean that we can't be entitled to having access to it now.'
'If it's lost, it's lost forever'
The green was formerly used by a bowling club which closed because of a shortage of members.
In 2020, plans for 40 homes on the site were rejected by planning officials.
However, Noah Management and Developments has made a new application for a block of flats which has been recommended for approval by Glasgow city council planning officers.
The application, which received 125 letters of support, includes a publicly accessible community space, spanning over half the existing site, as well as a 'community facility'.
The local authority received 249 objections to the application.
'If it's lost, it's lost forever,' Ms Smith said. 'Nobody pulls down buildings to reinstate a park, so we are desperately trying to keep this space green.
'When word started to get out that the club was in difficulties, we asked if we could negotiate with them to look into ways to purchase the site.
'But all of those applications were denied. The developer went ahead and bought the site. They knew that there was a strong community wish to keep that space.
'But they pressed ahead and bought it anyway. It was essentially a hostile act against the community because we had demonstrated our need and enthusiasm to keep this space.'
'Much needed housing'
Noah Management and Developments was approached for comment.
The firm has previously said the apartments would provide ' much needed housing ' which will 'enable the funding and the creation of a significant community open space and community hub occupying 50 per cent of the site, to be gifted at no cost to the local community'.
The firm added: 'The former club grounds and clubhouse have now been vacant for over five years and present a risk of continued deterioration and vandalism whilst also encouraging anti-social behaviour on the site.'

CALUM CROWE: Russell Martin's vision of footballing 'utopia' won't wash at Rangers. He will know that you either win trophies at Ibrox or you're deemed a failure

When Rangers were weighing up the credentials of all the contenders for their managerial vacancy, it was clear that Russell Martin ticked a lot of boxes. A talented and progressive young coach with a clear style of play? Check. Someone who knows the club and has experience of Scottish football? Check. Someone with a track record of improving and developing young players? Yep. Someone who is articulate, intelligent, and a natural leader? Again, check.

Simone Lahbib joins the cast of BBC Scotland drama River City

Scots actress Simone Lahbib (Bad Girls, Wire in the Blood, Loch Ness) has joined the cast of BBC Scotland's drama, River City, as Vivienne 'Viv' Barton – part of the formidable Foulkes gangster family. Simone will make her River City debut at the end of June (June 23 on BBC iPlayer and June 25 on BBC Scotland) as part of the forthcoming new series. Business owner Viv arrives in Shieldinch in the hope of reconciling with her son Tyler (Cameron Fulton), after walking out on her marriage to Harry Foulkes (Jim Sturgeon) and her family over two decades ago. Her surprise arrival shocks family friend Eddie Corrigan (Rob Jarvis), who reveals to Viv he thought she was dead – a lie Harry spun for decades. Stunned, Viv will reveal the shocking truth behind her decision to abandon her family - but will Tyler forgive her and how will Harry feel to see his wife back from the dead? Simone is looking forward to the drama Viv will bring: 'Viv is a wonderfully complex character. She'll do and say anything she needs to survive but surviving isn't enough for Viv…she has plans. 'Viv is desperate to reconnect with her son Tyler, played by the super talented Cameron Fulton and all the while avoid her ex-husband, gangster Harry Foulkes who is played by the lovely Jim Sturgeon. Unfortunately, the way she will go about things turns what is already a delicate, emotionally charged situation into a series of traumatic events. 'She's like the proverbial cat among the pigeons, a bull in a china shop, a tornado, causing devastation to everything and everyone in her path.' For years, Viv stayed hidden but after reading about Tyler's accident at New Year and having read about her son Darren's death in the papers, a guilt-ridden Viv has vowed to make right all the wrongs of her past and be there for her only surviving son. However, Viv will need to face her estranged husband Harry, a ruthless, cold-blooded killer who won't be messed with. Martin McCardie, BBC Studios Executive Producer, says: 'Everyone is thrilled to have Simone on board at River City. Her character Viv Barton is wonderfully complex and will make quite an impact on arrival. She's a caring mum who desperately wants to make amends with her estranged son, Tyler but she also has her eye on the Foulkes family fortune and the power her ex-husband Harry has. Viv doesn't care who will be collateral damage in her pursuit of these things…including her son. We're sure audiences will be enthralled by Viv Barton and the chaos she brings with her.' Returning to Scotland is a perk of the job for Simone: 'Working in Scotland for me always feels like coming home. It's literally the most perfect location for me - I get to stay with my parents between filming, so I spend time with all my family and even have my mum to go through my lines with me - she gets very into her roles! 'River City has a truly wonderful cast and crew. There's a real family feel on set which comes from working with good people. Everyone has made me feel so welcome from day one.' Simone joins the cast alongside new arrivals including Michael Moreland (Six Four, Years & Years) as Dr Joseph Albert, James Young (Guilt) as Simon Mack and Graeme Dalling (Outlander, Only Child) as Kelly-Marie's (played by Carmen Pieraccini) husband Chris Black. River City returns for a new series on BBC iPlayer from Monday 16 June, BBC Scotland on Mondays and Wednesdays and BBC One Scotland on Tuesdays and Thursdays. River City is a BBC Studios Drama Production for BBC Scotland. The Executive Producers are Martin McCardie for BBC Studios Drama and Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland. Watch River City on BBC iPlayer JM2

Two evil knife thugs who carried out unprovoked horror attacks on four strangers in Glasgow jailed for 14 years

A PAIR of knife thugs guilty of "gratuitous violence" on four strangers in less than two hours have been jailed for a total of 14 and a half years. Declan Fulton, 27, and Brandon Paterson, 22, struck late at night in Glasgow city centre last July. 2 One man was left with a horror facial wound for not having cigarettes to give them. Paterson was subject to five different bail orders at the time of the crimes. The pair were today sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow, having earlier admitted their guilt. Fulton was jailed for eight years, with Paterson locked up for six and a half years. The duo will also be supervised on their eventual release. Fulton already had previous for violence, weapons, disorder, theft and breaching court orders. Paterson was also a known offender. He flouted five separate bail orders - one for a drugs charge imposed just a week before these crimes. Explaining these attacks, prosecutor Neil McCulloch told the court: "This case relates to four incidents which took place in Glasgow city centre between 11.20pm on July 8 2024 and 1.30am on July 9. "This was the assault of several people - who are not known to Fulton and Paterson - at various locations." Gregor McHarg was first targeted while out walking his dog in Sauchiehall Street. Tourist caught filming small child in Scots park tells court he meant 'no harm' One threatened: "I will slit your dog's throat." Mr McHarg initially questioned them before both claimed they were armed with blades. The thugs stated: "Do you know who we are?" Fulton initially slashed at Mr McHarg and tried to stab him. The man branded them "cowards". Mr McHarg - bleeding from a wound to his elbow - then tailed the pair after they casually walked off. He approached them in nearby Bath Street where Fulton knifed him in the chest and Paterson hurled a traffic cone at him. Mr McHarg ended up needing hospital treatment, including for a punctured lung. Mr McCulloch said there was a "potential" threat to his life. He is also permanently scarred. The next victim was then set upon in a "seemingly unprovoked" attack in Buchanan Street about an hour later. Robert Anderson was punched by Fulton before Paterson joined in. After an attempt was made to smack him with a glass bottle, Fulton then slashed the man twice with a black-handled blade across the face. Mr Anderson ended up needing a total of 19 stitches for two wounds. Around 1.20am, Sergi Avila was walking with a friend in Dundas Street when the assailants asked for cigarettes. They did not have any to give. Mr McCulloch: "As a result, one of the pair began challenging Sergi Avila to fight before he approached from behind and slashed him to the right side of his face." One of the victims called you cowards, which is a good description of what you did... you will pay a heavy price Lord Mulholland This caused a nasty, disfiguring wound from this victim's mouth across his cheek to his ear. Fulton and Paterson fled the scene. After getting help from a nearby motorist, Mr Alva was taken to hospital for his injuries. The court heard, like the other men, he is also scarred for life. The final victim was Just Eat delivery driver Saoud Abdullah, minutes later. He was struck in Sauchiehall Street, having initially given an associate of the pair some water. Fulton went on to yank open the man's Just Eat bag and demanded his phone. Mr McCulloch: "Fulton slashed him on the left hand, causing it to bleed heavily." Mr Abdullah also ended up in hospital, having gone to a nearby hotel for help. During a probe to catch the attackers, Fulton was arrested later that day. It was almost a fortnight before Paterson was traced in Glasgow city centre. The pair admitted in court to being involved in three of the aggravated assaults, with Fulton alone pleading guilty to attacking Mr Abdullah. Sentencing, Lord Mulholland ordered one of the thugs to "be respectful" by taking his hands out of his pockets and standing up straight in the dock. The judge went on: "You pleaded guilty to a series of appalling assaults using weapons on innocent members of the public going about their business. "One of the victims called you cowards, which is a good description of what you did. "This was gratuitous violence, and you will pay a heavy price. "You are both violent thugs, and I will protect the public from you."
