Govt provides VIP-level security to AAIB head leading Air India crash probe
The Union government has extended X-category armed security to GVG Yugandhar, director general of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), who is leading the investigation into the June 12 Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, PTI reported on Saturday.
Following a threat perception report, the Ministry of Home Affairs directed the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to provide protection to Yugandhar. Under the arrangement, three to four armed CRPF personnel will accompany the AAIB chief during his nationwide travel.
ICAO joins investigation as observer
In an unusual development, India has granted observer status to an expert from the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) for the ongoing probe. The ICAO, the UN's specialised aviation agency, had formally requested to send an observer to the crash inquiry — a request Indian authorities considered before approving.
Tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad
Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on June 12. The aircraft was bound for London Gatwick on a non-stop flight.
It struck a medical hostel complex in the Meghani Nagar area, killing 241 of the 242 passengers and crew on board. One passenger survived with minor injuries. In addition, 29 people on the ground lost their lives, taking the total death toll to 270.
Multidisciplinary probe team formed
The AAIB launched a formal investigation on June 13, constituting a multidisciplinary team comprising members from the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), an air traffic control officer, and an aviation medicine specialist.
Black box data analysis underway in Delhi
The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) and flight data recorder (FDR) — collectively known as black boxes — were retrieved and transported under high security to Delhi for analysis.
According to the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the CVR and FDR were recovered from the crash site on June 13 and June 16, respectively. One recorder was found atop a building, the other amid debris. Both were airlifted to the capital by the Indian Air Force on June 24. The data module from the front recorder was accessed and downloaded on June 25 at the AAIB laboratory in Delhi.

The second passenger reported to the crew that the individual was being abusive," the airline said. Air India's crew acted swiftly to de-escalate the situation, relocating the affected passenger to a business-class seat for the remainder of the flight. Upon landing at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport, the airline's security team--previously alerted by the pilot--was on standby to address the issue. The disruptive individual was handed over to airport security for further investigation. "Our cabin crew immediately de-escalated the situation by relocating the second passenger to a business-class seat for the duration of the landing. Following a complaint by the second passenger, the pilot-in-command notified our security team on the ground about the situation, who were present upon the flight's arrival in Delhi. The disruptive passenger was handed over to the airport security for further investigation," the airline said. Air India maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards disruptive behaviour and prioritises the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew," a spokesperson said. "We will fully cooperate with the relevant authorities, and the matter is now under their purview," the airline added. In line with guidelines set by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), airlines are required to take such incidents seriously. Under DGCA norms, carriers must establish an internal committee to investigate the matter and determine any necessary action, including the possibility of placing the passenger on India's no-fly list.

Yash Dayal accused of physical violence, misleading woman with promise of marriage: 'Mentally, physically exploited her'
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Indian pacer Yash Dayal has reportedly been named in a complaint filed by a woman from Ghaziabad, accusing the 27-year-old cricketer of mental, emotional, and physical exploitation under the pretext of marriage. According to a report from India Today, the woman submitted her grievance through the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's online portal, IGRS, prompting the CM's office to seek a formal report from the Circle Officer (CO) of Indirapuram. The Ghaziabad police have reportedly been given a deadline of July 21 to act on the matter; Hindustan Times couldn't independently verify the report. The complaint further alleges that after the woman confronted Dayal about his intentions, she was subjected to abuse. 'When the complainant realized the deception and protested, she was subjected to physical violence and mental harassment. During the relationship, the complainant was also exploited financially and emotionally.' Chat records, screenshots to back accusations The woman also claimed that Dayal had accepted money from her and alleged he had behaved similarly with several other women. 'Later, it was found that the man was involved in similar false relationships with other girls too,' the statement adds. According to her, she possesses 'chat records, screenshots, video calls, and photos as evidence' to back her allegations. The FIR ends with a plea for an immediate and fair investigation. 'It has been requested that a swift investigation be conducted into the matter and that legal action be taken against the concerned individual. This step is not only important for her but also for all those girls who fall victim to such deceitful relationships.' Dayal, who played 15 matches for RCB in IPL 2025 and took 13 wickets, has yet to respond publicly to the allegations.
