Recording captured the chilling sound of the Titan submersible's final moment

NBC News12-02-2025

The federal government released a chilling audio recording of the doomed Titan submersible as it imploded in the North Atlantic Ocean, killing five people nearly two years ago, officials said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recording was made by a passive acoustic recorder about 900 miles from where the OceanGate vessel met its end.
NOAA'S Ocean Noise Reference Station Network is made up of 13 passive acoustic monitoring sites within the Northeastern continental United States.
A steady static was suddenly interrupted by a boom that the Coast Guard said it believes is the Titan buckling under the water's pressure, instantly killing all aboard.
The audio clip 'records the suspected acoustic signature of the Titan submersible implosion' on June 18, 2023, the Coast Guard said.
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, 61, who was piloting the Titan; deep sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who was experienced in visiting the Titanic wreck site; British tycoon Hamish Harding, 58; and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son, Suleman, 19, were killed on the doomed journey to view the Titanic wreck site in the North Atlantic Ocean off Canada.
The voyage was nearly two hours old when the vessel lost contact with its support ship, setting off a frantic search.
Public fascination about the submersible was sparked by reports of 'banging noises' that had been detected, sparking talk over how long passengers could sustain themselves in a cramped tube running out of oxygen.

Tourist smashes two Terracotta Army warriors during bizarre museum rampage

To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Two of the world famous Terracotta Army clay warriors have been damaged after a tourist jumped into a pit and pushed them over. The 30-year-old man launched himself into the pit at the museum housing the antiques in Xi'an, China, on May 30, while eyewitnesses looked on in shock. Once inside the 18ft deep pit, the man, only identified by his surname, Sun, pushed and pulled over the statues. Video footage then shows him lying on the ground covering his face as eyewitnesses yell at him. One, Xiao Lin, said he was visiting the site with a tour guide when he suddenly saw the man jump in. He shouted, 'What are you doing?' before the man touched the figures and pushed them over. He said: 'Later, the museum was closed, and we were evacuated by staff. I didn't see how the man was removed from the pit.' A tour guide at the scene, named Tete, confirmed the man jumped in and toppled over the terracotta warriors. Afterwards museum security restrained the man while authorities confirmed he is suffering with his mental health. The exhibit is still open to the public while officials work to repair the damage. The Terracotta Army is regarded as one of China's greatest archaeological treasures and features a collection of more than 8,000 life-sized soldiers. The figures date from around the late 200s BCE and were discovered on March 29, 1974, by local farmers just outside Xi'an. In 2017, a man admitted to stealing a thumb from one of the Terracotta statues that was on display in Pennsylvania. Footage showed him taking selfies with the statues before appearing to break something off. The missing thumb was only noticed a month later and the FBI was called. More Trending Michael Rohana, snapped it off at the the Franklin Institute museum from the statue which was estimated to be worth $4.5million. By that figure, the damage to the statues in Xi'an could possible be $9million. Rohana later admitted that he had kept the thumb in a drawer. He was acquitted after his lawyer argued he was wrongly charged under laws that usually apply to major museum thefts. BBC The One Show viewers confused over unexpected format change

The One Show fans were left confused as Alex Jones and Clara Amfo interviewed Tina Knowles on Tuesday The One Show viewers were left confused over an unexpected format change on Tuesday (June 3). In the latest episode of the popular BBC show, presenters Alex Jones and Clara Amfo covered the day's biggest stories from the UK and globally. ‌ The duo also spoke to actors Orlando Bloom and Nick Mohammed about their new British action comedy, Deep Cover, as well as television presenter Fern Britton, who discussed her latest novel, A Cornish Legacy. ‌ Later on, the hosts sat down with Tina Knowles to talk about her revealing new memoir, Matriarch. The book dives into her life's story, shedding light on her experiences of grief, tragedy, love and heartache, in addition to how she raised her successful daughters, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Solange Knowles, reports the Express. However, the show's viewers were left confused as Tina didn't join the other guests on the green sofa, but was instead sat in a different part of the studio. "I wonder if guests negotiate specially to be interviewed in this separate space, away from the riffraff on the main sofa," one viewer pondered on X (formerly Twitter). Another chimed in: "Tina gets her own sofa #TheOneShow," while someone else questioned: "Why wasn't she sat on the sofa with the guests? #TheOneShow." ‌ There was also speculation among some audience members about whether Tina's segment had been pre-taped, with one comment noting: "Never known anyone do this, assuming it's pre-recorded." During her interview, Tina opened up about the significance of penning her memoir, stating: "I have just been behind the scenes for pretty much [my daughters] whole career, so this was a big step for me to come out. ‌ "It's been a wonderful journey, I've learned so much from writing this book. It was very necessary to look at all the things, the good and the bad, that have happened in my life, and for me to tell it from my own words. "We're in a time where there are so many rumours, and I just wanted to set the record straight on so many things. It's been a great healing journey for me." Tina revealed that the memoir's origins began over a decade ago as recordings for her grandchildren, but she later realised its wider potential to aid others and chose to publish it.
