Russell feels Verstappen should have been disqualified at Spanish GP

The National2 days ago

A processional race at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya – which was won by Oscar Piastri as he extended his championship advantage over second-placed Lando Norris from three points to 10 – came alive on lap 64 of 66 when a furious Verstappen and Russell came to blows.
Following a safety-car restart, Verstappen fell off the road as he attempted to defend fourth position from Russell.
He rejoined ahead of the Mercedes driver but was advised by his Red Bull team to concede the position.
Drama in the closing stages of the race! 😱

Verstappen slowed down at Turn 5 to allow Russell past, but then accelerated and drove into his rival's Mercedes.
'What the f***'?' Russell said on the radio. Verstappen later moved out of Russell's way, and crossed the line in fifth. However, he was hit with a 10-second penalty by the stewards – demoting him to 10th – and also punished with three penalty points on his licence which leaves him just one point away from a race ban.
In commentary for Sky Sports, Nico Rosberg said Verstappen's sanction was too lenient and that he should have been shown a black flag – an immediate disqualification.
And when the 2016 world champion's claim was put to Russell, the Englishman replied: 'If it was truly deliberate then absolutely, because you cannot deliberately crash into another driver.
'We are putting our lives on the line. We are fortunate the cars are as safe as they are these days but we shouldn't take it for granted.
'It felt very deliberate. It is something I have seen numerous times in sim racing and go-karts. I have never seen it in a Formula One race. It felt strange, bizarre and I really don't know what was going through his mind.
'It is a shame because Max is one of the best drivers in the world but manoeuvres like that are totally unnecessary. It lets him down, and it is a shame for all of the young kids looking up to us, aspiring to be Formula One drivers.'
Responding to Russell's criticism, Verstappen said: 'Well, I'll bring some tissues next time.
'He has his view, I have my view. It's better not to comment. In life you shouldn't regret too many things. (I have) no regrets.'
Verstappen had just lost third place to Charles Leclerc after he opened the door to the Ferrari driver when he made a mistake on the exit of the final corner in a six-lap shootout to the flag following the deployment of a safety car.
Russell then attempted to sling his Mercedes underneath Verstappen's Red Bull at the first corner before the Dutchman took to the escape road and remained ahead of the Briton.

'Max, can you let Russell through, please?' said Verstappen's race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase.
'What? I was ahead, mate. What the f***! He just ran me off the road.'
Explaining their decision to hit Verstappen with a 10-second penalty – which leaves him a distant 49 points adrift of Piastri in the championship – the stewards said: 'From the radio communications, it was clear that the driver of Car 1 (Verstappen) was asked by his team to 'give the position back' to Car 63 (Russell) for what they perceived to be an earlier breach by Car 1 for leaving the track and gaining a lasting advantage (in fact, we had later determined that we would take no further action in relation to that incident).
'The driver of Car 1 was clearly unhappy with his team's request to give the position back. At the approach to Turn 5, Car 1 significantly reduced its speed thereby appearing to allow Car 63 to overtake.
'However, after Car 63 got ahead of Car 1 at the entry of Turn 5, Car 1 suddenly accelerated and collided with Car 63. The collision was undoubtedly caused by the actions of Car 1.'

Shayden Morris on his unseen Aberdeen inspiration from Raheem Sterling and brutal advice from Scotland hero

The season ended in Scottish Cup glory for Morris but he is already gearing up for next season Shayden Morris has been studying footage of Raheem Sterling in his prime in a bid to shine for Aberdeen on the continent. The winger was one of the Dons' main players last term, helping them to Scottish Cup glory after being named their player of the year. ‌ That followed the 23-year-old Englishman working hard on the defensive side of his game under Jimmy Thelin. ‌ But Morris has also taken steps to add more creativity and finishing touches by watching England winger Sterling at the top of his game at Manchester City for tips. A Europa League assault looms for Dons while Sterling and his Chelsea team-mates are Champions League bound. Londoner Morris said: 'I still watch old Raheem Sterling clips from the Man City days to study his movement. 'I want to improve on that so, even before games, sometimes I'll study him. 'He has pace but he's also got the skill to make the most of that, so I'm trying to add stuff that he did. 'I like to think I'm slowly getting better at that so I can help the team as much as possible.' ‌ It coincides with the former Fleetwood youngster moving to a new agency, where he can lean on former Scotland international Robert Snodgrass for on-field advice. Morris added: 'I've got a good support system around me with my agent Joe Bolger as we do a lot of analysis. ‌ 'Also, Snodgrass is part of the agency and we do a lot of stuff together as well. He was a winger and quite a technical player, although he didn't have as much pace as me. 'In fact, he told me 'I didn't have your pace but I've got the other side of the game'. 'So if he can help me with that other side, hopefully I can merge into something really special.' ‌ The Dons hierarchy remain in discussions with Morris and his representatives over a contract extension. His deal is up next summer and talks have been ongoing for several week, with Thelin hoping an agreement can be thrashed out. His season may have ended only a week-and-a-half ago but the Pittodrie favourite cannot wait to return to playing group stage games when Dons go into the Europa League play-off round knowing they are set for regular games in either that tourney or the Conference. ‌ Morris was involved at that play-off stage two seasons ago when Barry Robson's side lost out to BK Hacken. He then missed the majority of the Conference League group stage games due to injury. Now he is determined to ensure both he and Aberdeen make their mark. He said: 'I played in the two Hacken games, then I got injured but got back for the win over Eintracht Frankfurt. ‌ 'It was massive to be in the side who beat them as they are a big name in Europe and it was a moment to remember. 'Hopefully I can go into it fully fit and create more of those memorable nights for the club. 'It was hard for me last time. I even missed the travelling to the away games because I was working so hard to get back fit. 'So I would even look forward to that side of playing in European football.'

Liverpool transfer belief behind huge Wirtz bid as Slot eyes next two targets

Mirror Football takes a look at Liverpool's summer transfer window so far in what is expected to be a busy couple of months as boss Arne Slot and sporting director Richard Hughes work away The confetti had barely been cleared from the Anfield pitch after Liverpool 's Premier League title celebrations and the focus was firmly on making sure the trophy will remain there next season. This summer is going to be busy for the Reds if the first few days of the transfer market being open are anything to go by. This will be the window when Arne Slot starts to really put his touch to the team. ‌ Not only to make it more his squad, but also to ensure that they can compete on four fronts next season. This is a summer of adding more depth and moving on players who do not fit the criteria or - in the case of Caoimhin Kelleher - need to be guaranteed much more playing time. Those close to the club stress there is not a transfer war chest to be splashed out on but recruitment will be backed by the owners, FSG, and sales. ‌ The mantra remains the same. Spend on what they believe is value rather than for the sake of it. That is why there must be huge belief within the club that Florian Wirtz is a sensational footballer with potential to be even better otherwise they would not be submitting eye-watering nine-figure offers. While the signing of Jeremie Frimpong, also from Bayer Leverkusen, in a £29.5m deal is more the deals we have been accustomed to seeing the Reds make. A low - in today's market - release clause being met to get a highly-rated player who is versatile enough to play in different positions, even if pushing Conor Bradley for a right-back starting spot may be the initial aim. It is clear that this is - while being led by sporting director Richard Hughes - the start of Slot putting his touches to the team after his first summer saw the only arrival being Federico Chiesa on a cut-price deal. For all the talk of last season being Slot turning the Reds more orchestral than the heavy metal football of Jurgen Klopp, those within the club felt the changes to the playing style were more subtle than that. Slot worked with what he had got. He shifted Ryan Gravenberch to the No.6 role while the full-backs were not given as much freedom to roam and more control was asked from the front line. It brought a 20th English league title when many expected them to be battling it out for a Champions League spot at best. Yet Slot was still not content. He wants to win the title again but also go further in Europe. The Dutchman knew against PSG that Liverpool struggled with their frantic press and pace with the Reds going through a slight lull at the time they faced the soon-to-be-crowned European kings. ‌ That could have been down to his own overreliance on the same players. He was also concerned about how Newcastle 's midfield in the Carabao Cup final were too physical for the Reds but he is not adding muscle to match that. Instead, it appears more pace, flair and creativeness is how Slot is going about it. Wirtz is a deal that is expected to get done given the Reds have elbowed in ahead of Manchester City to ensure they're the destination of choice for the Germany attacking star. ‌ Frimpong is done with Trent Alexander-Arnold going to Real Madrid, with £10m banked to end his contract early. Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez is wanted while a striker could be dependent on who leaves this summer. Slot is starting to structure his team with the rock-solid foundation of a Premier League title to build upon, along with Mo Salah 's goals, Virgil van Dijk's defensive prowess and Alisson's steady hands. It is why many across Europe believe Anfield is the place to be at the moment.

"If I close my eyes," he told Corriere della Sera, "I see him smiling after a victory. "I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though." Briatore's update follows a claim by his ex-wife Elisabetta Gregoraci, who said: 'Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. "Only three people can visit him and I know who they are."
