Hundreds take ‘polar plunge' into Lake Acworth to raise money for Special Olympics
Special Olympics Georgia is getting a boost thanks to hundreds of people who took a polar plunge in their honor on Saturday.
Team Chilly 2 Action News made up of Channel 2 Investigative Reporter Mark Winne, Channel 2 Cobb County Bureau Chief Michele Newell and Channel 2′s Courtney Francisco were among the teams who jumped into the frigid waters of Lake Acworth.

Many of the teams were made up of local law enforcement agencies.
The annual event raises money to help more than 18,000 athletes with Georgia Special Olympics.
'We put on coaches clinics and three state games, invitational games. We go to southeast games. We're going to world games next month in Italy,' Georgia Sheats with Special Olympics said.

Pickleball Kingdom is bringing a location to Austell
A pickleball franchise is expanding to Cobb County. Pickleball Kingdom will open a new location at 3999 Austell Road, Suite 501, in Austell. The facility will be about 25,000 square feet and include 10 professional-grade indoor courts. It is expected to open this winter. The company announced in February that it will be launching a major expansion across Georgia, with more than 20 clubs in development. Nithi and Usha Anand are spearheading the expansion in Georgia. 'We are delighted to bring Pickleball Kingdom to Austell and contribute to the development of a thriving pickleball community in this area,' said the Anands in a statement. 'Our vision is to create a welcoming space where individuals can engage in this exciting sport, improve their fitness, and connect with others who share a passion for pickleball.' So far, in addition to the Austell location, Pickleball Kingdom is opening three other locations in Georgia: in Watkinsville at Hog Mountain Road and Macon Highway, as well as locations yet to be determined in Alpharetta and Atlanta. The opening date for the Watkinsville location hasn't been listed yet. Pickleball Kingdom has big plans. It currently has locations in nine states, with more locations targeted for 15 other states, according to the company's website. Law Enforcement Torch Run raises money for Special Olympics
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) — Local police officers ran alongside community members to bring awareness to disabled athletics. The Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through Binghamton on Monday, raising funds for Special Olympics New York. For over 35 years, the organization has gathered money to support intellectually disabled athletes throughout the state. This year, Athletes and officers alike ran from Binghamton University to Tully's, where a post-run party was held. Associate Director of Development for Special Olympics New York, Amber Mott, says that over 6,000 officers have participated in runs across the state. 'They absolutely love it. They always tell me that this is one of those events that brings a smile to their face every year. They can't wait for it to come up to run with the athletes and bring awareness to what our cause is,' said Mott. Special Olympics New York has supported over 48,000 competitors across the state with sports training, competitions, and health screenings. Visit for additional information. Crane needed to remove large tree that fell on Lawrenceville home in storm
Heavy rain and gusty wind toppled trees in a Lawrenceville neighborhood on Saturday. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Channel 2's Tom Regan, who saw a huge tree that fell on a house, estimates the tree was 100 feet tall and weighed several tons. Neighbors said they were greatly relieved that no one was hurt when it crashed on a Lake Ridge Terrace home on Saturday. 'It was really pouring. The wind was gusting real badly,' Cristen Safrid said. The severe weather sent a towering tree from the yard of her rental home, crashing onto the home next door. Safrid said she was at dinner at the time. The tree also sliced through another building on the property. 'We looked in the backyard, and sure enough, tree down on this side, and a tree on our right side went into the neighbor's roof a little bit. It was a really big tree, and it's not like it was a dead tree so, surprised that it was down like that,' Safrid said. Crews using a large crane cut sections of the tree using chainsaws . They then removed the sections from the roof of the home. The process took several hours. Safrid said her neighbor was at home when the massive tree toppled over. The tree did more damage to the smaller structure than the home. 'Nobody got hurt, but it was a huge tree. And it really could've been bad if it had went in a different direction,' Safrid said. The woman who lives at the house hit by the tree told Tom Regan that, in addition to the roof damage, there was interior damage, some of it caused by rain falling through a hole in the roof.
