Why Michigan football's 2025 spring game will not be aired live on TV
Michigan defensive run game coordinator and linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary talks to Maize Team players during the second half of the spring game at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, April 20, 2024.
Michigan football's annual Maize and Blue spring game, scheduled to be held at 11 a.m. April 19 at the Big House, will not be televised live in part for strategic reasons.
Program spokesman Dave Ablauf told media members who were gathered for Wednesday's availability at Schembechler Hall that instead of airing on game day, the spring game will be tape delayed until the next weekend, at which time it will be played on Big Ten Network.

On April 19, instead, BTN will air U-M's men's lacrosse home game against Ohio State.
Earlier this week, head coach Sherrone Moore made it clear the spring game is important to the program.
'We're playing it,' Moore said Monday. 'It's a great opportunity for our players — and our fans — to be out there, and just see the team in general. Now, we're not going to run every single play and do every single thing, but it's a great opportunity — especially for the guys that may not get the opportunity to play in the Big House on Saturdays as much as others."

The timing of when the game will finally air is not perceived as a coincidence: The football spring transfer portal window will be open from April 16-25, and the hope from U-M's perspective is by not creating additional tape for opposing coaches to see, they will be less inclined to attempt to poach players.
The hope, also, by not airing the game as it happens, is that it will drive many more fans to attend in person. When Jim Harbaugh first arrived at U-M the spring game started to become a notable event once again. The program had more than 50,000 people at the event in 2015, nearly 55,000 in 2017 and in 2019, U-M drew 60,000 people to its annual spring game, which represents the conclusion of spring ball5.
There were no games in 2020 or 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but since then, attendance numbers have dwindled.
While there was no clear attendance total from 2022, a Free Press count in 2023 suggested fewer than 30,000 fans in attendance. In 2024, on the heels of a national championship, there appeared to be roughly 31,000.

Michigan is far from the only program to make alterations to its spring schedule. Penn State recently announced it will not televise its spring game in any capacity, while programs such as Michigan State, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State have opted not to have a game, but instead various events such as a "combine" or a normal practice.
Michigan's game is free to attend for the public, with the same rules and regulations as a normal game for what is allowed into the stadium.

Texas A&M transfer WR signs NIL deal with trading card company
Texas A&M transfer WR signs NIL deal with trading card company Texas A&M's 2025 wide receiver rotation is completely revamped after the additions of KC Concepcion (NC State), Jonah Wilson (Houston), and Mario Craver (Mississippi State) this offseason, while the return of Terry Bussey, Ashton Bethel-Roman and Izaiah Williams has given starting quarterback Marcel Reed an elite corps that should take the Aggie passing game to the next level. With elite talent comes NIL earnings, and after the NCAA vs. House bill was passed, Universities will now directly pay their athletes with a $20.5 million cap per institution. At the same time, players will continue to be able to sign NIL deals with various organizations. This week, it was revealed that KC Concepcion signed a $2.5 million deal with The Famile. In contrast, Jaxson Callaway of AggiesToday revealed on Wednesday that Marion Craver has reportedly signed his NIL deal with Topps Trading Cards. According to Callaway, Craver will work with a variety of trading cards ranging from Autograph, Relic, Chrome, and Specialty Sets. As Callaway notes in the article, Craver's ascending profile and star potential after his freshman season with the Bulldogs are the primary reasons Topps is so excited about his representation moving forward. "Mario Craver is as an emerging figure in the trading card market, leveraging his collegiate status to contribute to Topps' diverse portfolio. The inclusion of autographs and jerseys taps into the growing demand for authenticated memorabilia, especially as Topps expands with 2025 releases like Series 2 and Chrome. Collectors can anticipate Craver's cards in hobby boxes or as standalone rarities, available through Topps' official site or retailers like Target, with potential value increases if his career progresses." Craver enters the 2025 season as the No. 2 or 3 option, depending on the results of fall practices, providing Marcel Reed with a legitimate deep threat who can take the top of most secondaries. His quickness in route will create immediate separation in the short passing game. We agreed that would be the case if we don't reach the final. I want to stick to the agreement so that they can have a good tournament.' Well, not so fast... After examining the exact schedule of the U-21s, Nagelsmann decided to keep Woltemade longer per Bild (via @iMiaSanMia): Update: Change of plan for Woltemade. He will stay with the senior national team because the U-21s have Friday and Saturday off. Jackson Jobe's injury is another reminder of the perils MLB pitchers face
DETROIT — Every time another one of these pitchers comes along, the thought lingers in the back of everyone's mind. No one wants to say it. No one even wants to think about it. But it has become reality in this game. Pitchers who heave triple-digit fastballs and twirl nasty breaking pitches damage their arms. Advertisement With every young ace-in-the-making these days, we hold our breaths and try to ignore the elephant. The uncomfortable thought tiptoed into the room May 23 after a start in which Detroit Tigers rookie Jackson Jobe battled the Cleveland Guardians admirably but never looked quite comfortable himself. After that outing, Jobe made multiple vague references to not feeling good physically. 'Today was definitely not the best I've felt,' Jobe said. 'But not looking too much into it. Just kind of part of it.' Can't blame Jobe for acting like the rest of us. Maybe it's nothing, it was easy to think. This is the major leagues. Aches and pains are part of the job. The next time out? Jobe went 4 2/3 innings against the Giants. He gave up seven hits, walked three batters and surrendered three runs. His velocity was down all across the board. Postgame, there was no sight of the talented young pitcher the Tigers drafted third overall in 2021. Cue the real worries. The first medical review indicated a Grade 1 flexor strain. That meant the mildest form of the injury. This was still concerning for a young pitcher who has battled a back injury and a hamstring issue in his time in the minor leagues. But this was his first arm injury. In many ways, Jobe represented the type of pitcher teams hope can be immune — at least for six years of team control — from the effects of pitching in the modern game. He did not emerge as a full-fledged pitcher until late in his high school career. He hardly worked as a starter until his senior year of high school. Even the time missed with non-arm injuries in the minor leagues suggested Jobe had saved some of his bullets. It's rarely that simple. If there were a one-size-fits-all way to save arms, everyone would be doing it. Jobe went in for further medical evaluation. Those exams revealed damage to his ulnar collateral ligament. Now, he is headed for surgery. Speaking to reporters in Baltimore, Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg said Dr. Keith Meister will perform the surgery. No date has been set for the procedure. Advertisement 'As is standard in our medical evaluation process, we sought additional evaluations,' Greenberg told reporters. 'Through that evaluation process a UCL injury was also discovered. From there, there were a series of conversations between Jackson, the doctors and our medical staff. Ultimately, surgery was determined as the path.' Until Meister opens up Jobe's elbow, they likely won't know the exact nature of the procedure. The internal brace has become a trendy innovation that can stem off full UCL reconstruction. The hope is the brace, even when combined with full UCL reconstructions, can quicken recovery time and make UCLs more durable in the future. But the amount of two-time Tommy John pitchers is also on the rise. So the fear of injury still dominates every conversation around starting pitching. It lingers when we discuss contracts extensions or big free-agent deals. It's there when you see a young hurler like Jobe or Paul Skenes. This spring, Hall of Fame manager Jim Leyland was talking about Skenes when the topic arose. 'I think at the end of the day, I don't know if there's ever a way you can prevent (injury),' he said. 'Some pitchers get hurt. That's just the way it is. It's been going on forever. I think you just accept the fact that it's possible to happen.' No one wants to whisper those words in the case of Tarik Skubal, who had Tommy John surgery in college and had a flexor tendon surgery in 2022. During that flexor tendon surgery, Skubal has said, Dr. Neal ElAttrache looked at his elbow and determined the UCL was in pristine condition. That was three years ago. Skubal has been durable ever since. But when you see him throwing 102.6 mph in the ninth inning … who's to say what that means? It's another thing everyone thinks but no one wants to utter aloud. The truth is, pitchers and UCL tears go hand in hand. Pending some sweeping rule change, that might not reverse anytime soon. This is no longer a trend. It is a fact. It happened to Skubal and Casey Mize, to Alex Faedo and Joey Wentz and Sawyer Gipson-Long, to pitchers young and old all across baseball. Advertisement Jobe now joins the club. Awful for him, even if it's halfway expected. 'Obviously it's never news you want to receive and it's obviously really disappointing for him,' Greenberg said. 'But he's in great hands. He's a determined individual. We've seen this before. We know what that process will look like, and very confident he's going to come back and be a really important contributor for this team for a long time.'
