I Spent A Whole Day In Epic Universe's Nintendo World, And There Are A Few Keys That Will Maximize The Experience

Universal's Epic Universe is now open to the public, and whether you think it's a Disney World killer or not, there's no denying it's a great theme park once you visit. This is especially true if you're a longtime obsessive Nintendo fan like me, and just got to take your daughter to experience the wondrous Super Nintendo World in person.
I can confirm it's even more glorious than videos and photos do it justice, and I spent a whole day in the land riding rides, looking for popcorn buckets, and just having an absolute blast with my seven-year-old. That said, I think I also learned some keys to maximizing the experience, and I'm hoping to pass them along to others ahead of their trip so that they make the most out of their time in the park.
I'm a frugal guy, so when it comes to the "bells and whistles" of the theme park experience, I'm gonna pass more often than not. For example, I decided not to get the express pass for me and my daughter, but I'll get into that more in the next section.
Because I'm frugal, I also passed on the opportunity to get a Power-Up Band (against the advice of CB's Jessica Rawden) for myself, but I absolutely understood the reason for getting one for my daughter. Most of the appeal of the park is feeling like you're in an actual Super Mario Bros. video game, and unless you have the band, you're going to miss out on the appeal of that experience.
And trust me, I can understand the pain of paying for a Disney Magic Band that offers less functional value than an actual Magic Band, but all that goes out the window the first time you get to or see someone else hit a question block for a coin. It's a feeling that never gets old, and there are so many other neat things to do with it when you get inside. There's an "underground" experience where you traverse the underbelly of the Mushroom Kingdom, and use it to unlock cool easter eggs along the way.
Plus, if you're someone who enjoys achievements, the band collects digital stamps and rewards for all the various accolades you collect while spending time in the park. We weren't able to complete everything in a full day there, so there is a reason to hold onto it in case you return in the future. Additionally, I've seen the band also functions as an amiibo if you own a Nintendo Switch, so store it in a safe place if you do purchase.
As I'm sure readers know, the Orlando experience is not cheap. A day at the hottest new theme park in the area, with a day at Magic Kingdom at Disney World the following day, was making my wallet weep. Not to mention, I already paid for the premier pass for Magic Kingdom, so I figured I could skimp on getting an Express Pass to ride the three rides at Super Nintendo World.
The original plan was to run through Super Nintendo World, check out some of the other parts of the park that others I work with raved about, and then get out by dinner time to meet up with family who didn't tag along. In the seven hours I was in the park, we spent all of it in Super Nintendo World, and a good deal of that time was spent waiting to ride Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge, Yoshi's Adventure, and Mine Cart Madness.
If you're trying to see the whole park, I think the express pass is the way to go. I also say that if you're looking for comfort, because full disclosure, those lines can be long and rough on a summer day. I will say the full queue for Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge is mostly indoors and air-conditioned, and full of easter eggs, so if you have to wait in line, it's so refreshing and fun to do so.
I wish I could say the same for Yoshi's Adventure, as outside of some artwork and music from Nintendo Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, you could breeze through it and not miss much. I would say the same for Mine Cart Madness as well, as even the great soundtrack of Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, and 3 music was not enough to make up for having to be out in the blazing sun for a bulk of the wait. Bottom line, if you need comfort or are on a tight schedule, spend the extra money on the Express Pass.
Going into Epic Universe, I had one objective in mind. I was going to leave with a souvenir Donkey Kong mug that came with a purchase of the DK Crush Float at The Bubbly Barrel. I dreamt of that mug for weeks, and all the things I might drink out of it. Hell, I was planning on splitting the float with my daughter while we waited in line for Donkey Kong: Mine-Cart Madness. By the way, that roller coaster is as incredible as it looks, though way more intense and scary for a seven-year-old than you might think by watching the videos of it online.

Unfortunately, when I arrived, The Bubbly Barrel's machine was not working. A bummer, to be sure, and on top of that, I was unable to purchase the souvenir cup without even getting the float in exchange. It's wild to say I would've actually done that, but considering I couldn't buy it in the gift shop, I was left with little other option than to ask.
It wasn't the only thing I was disappointed to leave without when I finished my day at Epic Universe. I also had my heart set on getting a Bowser shirt with a neon logo, but was unable to track it down when I ventured through the merchandise store. I ended up buying a Donkey Kong drinking glass, which I still really love, but couldn't help but be disappointed that I left with neither of the things I'd wanted.
All this to say, Super Nintendo World was absolutely filled to the brim with people when I was in there, and I don't imagine it'll be any less crowded anytime soon. There's only a limited amount of merchandise available, so I wouldn't suggest setting your heart on grabbing any one piece of anything until you're there and can assure you'll get your hands on it. Also, even when the machine is working, that line at The Bubbly Barrel is super long, so be prepared to wait if you want that mug like I did.
Overall, I'd have to say that Epic Universe was a real joy, though I do hope to see more of it overall the next time I get to visit. Be sure to check it out, and take heed of my tips about Super Nintendo World if you're looking to have the best time possible.

NYT Connections today – my hints and answers for June 22 (#742)
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Looking for a different day? A new NYT Connections puzzle appears at midnight each day for your time zone – which means that some people are always playing 'today's game' while others are playing 'yesterday's'. If you're looking for Saturday's puzzle instead then click here: NYT Connections hints and answers for Saturday, June 21 (game #741). Good morning! Let's play Connections, the NYT's clever word game that challenges you to group answers in various categories. It can be tough, so read on if you need Connections hints. What should you do once you've finished? Why, play some more word games of course. I've also got daily Strands hints and answers and Quordle hints and answers articles if you need help for those too, while Marc's Wordle today page covers the original viral word game. SPOILER WARNING: Information about NYT Connections today is below, so don't read on if you don't want to know the answers. The answers to today's Connections, game #742, are… YELLOW: NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT BULLETIN, FLASH, REPORT, WIRE GREEN: NOUNS FROM A FAMOUS LINE IN THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE HAPPINESS, LIBERTY, LIFE, PURSUIT BLUE: HBO SHOWS ENTOURAGE, EUPHORIA, INSECURE, SUCCESSION PURPLE: WHAT 'LEFT' MIGHT MEAN DEPARTED, PORT, PROGRESSIVE, REMAINING My rating: Moderate My score: 1 mistake My first thought on seeing the word board today was that surely ENTOURAGE, EUPHORIA and SUCCESSION went together as examples of glossy US TV shows. But what to add to them? The WIRE, maybe, but it was missing the definitive at the start, so seemed unlikely. Was there a show called DEPARTED maybe – or was that The Departed? Or it could be LIFE, as that's definitely a TV show – but a British one. In the end I got cold feet on that and looked elsewhere, spotting that LIFE, LIBERTY and the PURSUIT of HAPPINESS were all NOUNS FROM A FAMOUS LINE IN THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. That gave me an easy green, so I decided to next search for the supposedly easier still yellow. Yellow groups are almost always just straight groups of words with no subterfuge or misdirection, so I looked at the board with a clear mind and spotted FLASH, REPORT, WIRE and BULLETIN as examples of a NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT. With one more needed I looked again at the TV shows one, now shorn of LIFE and WIRE, and played those three with DEPARTED. That gave me 'one away', but I added INSECURE as another possible and got it right. Turns out they were all HBO shows. That just left purple and WHAT 'LEFT' MIGHT MEAN, a nice oblique group with DEPARTED, PORT, PROGRESSIVE and REMAINING. How did you do today? Let me know in the comments below. YELLOW: STOCKY SOLID, SQUAT, STOUT, THICK GREEN: COMPANY CONCERN, FIRM, HOUSE, OUTFIT BLUE: APPLE PRODUCTS BRANDY, BUTTER, CIDER, SAUCE PURPLE: STARTS OF EUROPEAN COUNTRIES GERM, LUXE, MALT, PORT NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite tough and purple usually very difficult. On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final one, as you'll be able to answer that one by a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little bit of breathing room. It's a little more involved than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For instance, watch out for homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers. It's playable for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.

YELLOW: KINDS OF JEANS GREEN: FICTION CATEGORIES BLUE: WORDS IN HEMINGWAY TITLES PURPLE: ___ GLASS GLASSWARE Right, the answers are below, so DO NOT SCROLL ANY FURTHER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE THEM. The answers to today's Connections, game #743, are… YELLOW: KINDS OF JEANS BOYFRIEND, FLARE, MOM, SKINNY GREEN: FICTION CATEGORIES HISTORICAL, LITERARY, SPECULATIVE, YOUNG ADULT BLUE: WORDS IN HEMINGWAY TITLES BELL, FAREWELL, OLD MAN, SUN PURPLE: ___ GLASS GLASSWARE COCKTAIL, COLLINS, OLD FASHIONED, SHOT My rating: Hard My score: Fail The first thing I thought when I saw today's Connections was 'alcoholic drinks' – not because I'm obsessed (I'm not a big drinker), but because OLD FASHIONED and COLLINS could both be types of COCKTAIL. But the presence of COCKTAIL itself suggested that was misdirection, so I looked elsewhere. HISTORICAL, LITERARY, SPECULATIVE and YOUNG ADULT all seemed like examples of FICTION CATEGORIES and indeed my hunch was correct, giving me green. Next, I thought FLARE, SKINNY and BELL might all be related to jeans, or types of trouser style – but didn't know what the fourth would be, so kept looking. And I kept looking. And looking. With nothing else suggesting itself I returned to that potential group and tried a succession of words – MOM, OLD FASHIONED and OLD MAN – but got it wrong each time. Turns out BELL was wrong, and what I should have had was BOYFRIEND, FLARE, MOM and SKINNY – but I've never heard the term BOYFRIEND JEANS and so lost my fledgling streak. With hindsight I probably should have given up on that angle sooner, but neither WORDS IN HEMINGWAY TITLES or ___ GLASS GLASSWARE were groups I would ever have got, so it wouldn't have made any difference. How did you do today? Let me know in the comments below. YELLOW: NEWS ANNOUNCEMENT BULLETIN, FLASH, REPORT, WIRE GREEN: NOUNS FROM A FAMOUS LINE IN THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE HAPPINESS, LIBERTY, LIFE, PURSUIT BLUE: HBO SHOWS ENTOURAGE, EUPHORIA, INSECURE, SUCCESSION PURPLE: WHAT 'LEFT' MIGHT MEAN DEPARTED, PORT, PROGRESSIVE, REMAINING NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games made by the New York Times. Missing witnesses and lingering questions plague prosecution as Diddy trial nears conclusion: expert
The government is expected to wrap up its case against Sean "Diddy" Combs on Monday after more than six weeks of testimony from a number of witnesses. Jury selection for the rapper's sex crimes trial began on May 5, and the prosecution called its last witness to the stand Friday after hearing Diddy's former assistant, alleged "drug mule" Brendan Paul, testify about his time employed by the Bad Boy Records founder. Diddy's legal team, headed by Marc Agnifilo and Teny Geragos, initially indicated they would need upwards of two weeks to plead their case, but told Judge Arun Subramanian last week that they may be able to rest by Tuesday or Wednesday. Despite the trial coming to a close, former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani admitted that lingering questions remain with the case, including questions about missing key witnesses. "What happened to Gina, who was Victim 3 in the indictment? The government said they were unable to get a hold of her, and she did not testify," Rahmani said. "Was she afraid, embarrassed, paid off by Combs, or was there another reason why she didn't comply with the subpoena? Regardless, it was a mistake by the prosecution to list her as a victim when they did not have assurances that she would appear. They should have known Combs has the resources to threaten or pay witnesses not to testify and have planned accordingly." There have been no allegations in court that Diddy threatened or paid witnesses not to testify. Rahmani also wondered why Diddy's chief of staff, Kristina "KK" Khorram, wasn't called to testify. Brendan Paul testified Friday that KK "basically ran the enterprise." During the testimony of summary witness Anaya Sankar, the jury was shown text messages between Diddy's ex Cassie Ventura and KK dated May 2, 2017. Cassie was telling KK that the "Last Night" singer allegedly had locked the door and dragged her by her hair. "What happened to Gina, who was Victim 3 in the indictment? The government said they were unable to get a hold of her, and she did not testify." More text messages between Cassie and KK dated April 20, 2018, showed Cassie saying she can't take the violence and being kicked out of her own home. KK responded, "I don't know what else to say, but I'm here…" Cassie then wrote, "I just want to stay focused." The jury was then shown text messages between KK and Diddy's more recent ex-girlfriend, who testified under the pseudonym Jane. She alleged that Diddy had forced her to have sex with male escorts during "hotel nights" and that occasionally the sex session was recorded. A text message sent to KK from Jane was shown to the jury, which claimed Combs was threatening to release the alleged sex tapes. Jane wrote, "You're his righthand woman…maybe he'll listen to you…" The message was sent on Feb. 18, 2024. "Many consider her to be Combs' Ghislaine Maxwell because she knows where the proverbial bodies are buried," Rahmani told Fox News Digital. "Khorram was actually involved in the alleged sex and drug trafficking and could have been charged as a co-conspirator. The government should have leaned on her to flip against her former boss. Instead, they gave her a pass by simply reading her text messages into evidence." Rahmani questioned why Diddy's ex-girlfriends, including Cassie, Mia and Jane, didn't leave if they had been sexually assaulted and trafficked. "The government put on expert Dawn Hughes to explain the psychology of abuse, but that is the biggest question in the case," Rahmani admitted. "Did the victims stay because they wanted the money and fame that came with being Combs' partner? If so, did they consent to the 'freak offs' while they were happening?" "Was this rape, or really regret and resentment? I'm not sure prosecutors have fully answered this question and this is the same argument the defense raised with some success in the Harvey Weinstein retrial." What the jury will decide remains the biggest question in the case. Attorney Nicole Blank Becker, who represents R. Kelly, told Fox News Digital that jurors, just like anyone else, have a difficult time separating emotions from charges. "When you hear about the horrible actions of P. Diddy, not only here, but then you see the actions on a video, and at some point, the jury will be told, 'OK,' perhaps that it was a domestic violence, but that's not really what this is about. It's about something bigger," Becker said. "The idea that the jurors will be able to separate that in their mind is highly unlikely, even though they will be told to. And there's a lot of demonstrative evidence in this case, is my understanding. WATCH: SEAN 'DIDDY' COMBS ASSAULTS CASSIE VENTURA IN 2016 LOS ANGELES HOTEL INCIDENT "My experience when I was in the case with R. Kelly, those types of things are often used not only to show what the government's trying to bring, show in their case, but it definitely brings an emotional side to a human, and sometimes that emotional part – It's very difficult to overlook when you're back there as a juror." "The idea that the jurors will be able to separate that in their mind is highly unlikely, even though they will be told to." She added, "I can only imagine the difficulty that there must be when you were back in a jury room to sort of separate if you think he's a good person or a bad person, because that's not what they're there for, right? Therefore, they're back there to basically check off boxes. If the government has done this, check it off. If the government has done that, check it off. Better bet that they're also back there talking about, 'Oh my god, can you believe what he did in this video?'" Becker noted that testimony and evidence may get misconstrued, and that the jury has to separate emotions from fact. "Some of it, I think it gets minced," Becker said. "It becomes … extremely difficult actually to say to yourself, 'OK self, I'm not supposed to let myself be emotionally involved in this. I'm supposed to just listen to the law, and then put the facts in where the law is appropriate.'" "I know in [R. Kelly's] case, I can only imagine how difficult that must have been. And I think that that's going to also be another difficult part of the Diddy case as well."
