Gunmen killed at least 20 people in north-central Nigeria over the weekend, local authorities say

Boston Globe27-05-2025

Benue state police spokesperson Anene Sewuese confirmed to The Associated Press that a weekend attack took place in Gwer West, but said only four people were killed, including a police officer who was responding to the raid.
Nigerian police authorities often provide lower death tolls than local authorities and witnesses when reporting on attacks.

While it remains unclear who was responsible for the killings, such attacks are common in Nigeria's northern region where local herders and farmers often clash over limited access to land and water.
The farmers accuse the herders, mostly of Fulani origin, of grazing their livestock on their farms and destroying their produce. The herders insist that the lands are grazing routes that were first backed by law in 1965, five years after the country gained its independence.
The governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, called the attack a 'heinous act' and 'a stark reminder of the pervasive violence and lawlessness' that have plagued the region in recent times in a statement on Sunday.
Last month, gunmen, believed to be herders, killed at least 40 people in north-central Nigeria.

Consultant behind AI-generated robocalls mimicking Biden goes on trial in New Hampshire

Advertisement Kramer, who owns a firm specializing in get-out-the-vote projects, has said he wasn't trying to influence the election but rather wanted to 'Maybe I'm a villain today, but I think in the end we get a better country and better democracy because of what I've done, deliberately,' Kramer told The Associated Press in February 2024. Advertisement Ahead of the trial, prosecutors sought to prevent Kramer from arguing that the primary was a meaningless straw poll because it wasn't sanctioned by the Democratic National Committee. At Biden's request, The state argued such evidence was irrelevant and could confuse jurors, but Judge Elizabeth Leonard denied the motion in March, saying the DNC's actions and Kramer's understanding of them were relevant to his motive and intent. She did grant the prosecution's request that the court accept as fact that the state held its presidential primary election as defined by law on Jan. 23, 2024. Jurors will be informed of that conclusion but won't be required to accept it. Defense says the only attack came from the DNC In his opening statement, defense attorney Thomas Reid said the robocall was Kramer's 'opinion and commentary' on the DNC's initial decision to block the state's delegates to the convention. 'That, ladies and gentlemen, was a brazen attack on your primary,' he said, referring to the DNC's actions. 'And it wasn't done by Steve Kramer.' 'He didn't see it as a real election, because it wasn't,' Reid said. Kramer faces Advertisement Kramer's attorney argued that his client didn't impersonate a candidate because the message didn't include Biden's name, and Biden wasn't a declared candidate in the primary. He also said the robocall message didn't tell anyone not to vote, a point quickly contradicted by the first half dozen witnesses for the prosecution. 'How else would one take it?' said Theodore Bosen, a retired lawyer from Berlin who received the call. 'That was horrific to my sensibilities that anybody would be trying to influence the vote in any election,' he said. On cross-examination, O'Donnell, the prosecutor, told jurors that Kramer tried to minimize his connection to the calls, including using his father's online banking account to pay the magician and fabricating the name of a 'client' when emailing a company involved in sending the calls. And he didn't contact authorities until the magician publicly identified him and authorities had begun tracing the calls to him, O'Donnell said. 'He knew it was wrong and was trying to get away with it,' O'Donnell said. Trial begins as the national landscape on AI is shifting Kramer The agency was developing AI-related rules when Donald Trump won the presidency, but has since shown signs of a possible shift toward loosening regulations. And though many states have enacted legislation regulating AI deepfakes in political campaigns, House Republicans in Congress recently added a clause to their signature tax bill that would ban states and localities from regulating artificial intelligence for a decade. Springfield Pride headliner Dawn Richard told ‘Diddy' jurors of threats, violence, abuse

SPRINGFIELD — Pop and R&B singer Dawn Richard headlines the Springfield Pride Parade this weekend, just three weeks after taking center stage at the federal sex trafficking trial of one-time mentor Sean 'Diddy' Combs. 'It's a celebration of Pride, and she's wonderful,' B.J. Coleman, public relations director for Springfield Pride, said Friday. Local Pride organizers booked Richard well before she was called by federal prosecutors to testify against Combs at his Manhattan trial, and organizers instead are focusing on Richard's support for the LGBTQ community. 'She's an awesome performer,' Coleman said. 'We just want to celebrate.' Richard was scheduled to play the fundraising ball on Friday. On Saturday, Richard is expected to join thousands for the parade on State Street, followed by a Pride block party on Stearns Square. Last month, Richard told jurors at Combs' trial that the hip-hop mogul threatened to kill her if she told anyone she saw him physically abusing his longtime girlfriend. Richard, according to The Associated Press, said Combs made the threat one day after she witnessed Combs punch, kick and swing at girlfriend Casandra 'Cassie' Ventura with a skillet. Richard said he told her and another woman who saw the attack that 'we could go missing' if they didn't stay quiet. Assistant U.S. Attorney Mitzi Steiner asked Richard what she took 'we could go missing' to mean. 'That we could die,' Richard said, adding she was shocked, because all of this happened just as she was beginning to record with Diddy. She performed in two of Combs' more successful recent acts: girl group Danity Kane and trio Diddy — Dirty Money. Diddy — Dirty Money was comprised of Richard and Kalenna Harper with Combs. But Richard, a New Orleans native, sued Combs last year, alleging threats and groping. Richard testified over two days, detailing the abuse she saw Ventura suffer at the hands of Combs. 'I saw him kick her, punch her in the stomach,' the AP quoted Richard as saying. And the abuse came every time Ventura spoke up for herself or, in Richard's words, 'had an opinion.' Combs' lawyers say prosecutors can prove domestic violence but not the federal crimes he's charged with. The 3rd annual Springfield Pride Parade took place on Saturday, June 1. Ex-police chief who escaped Arkansas prison recaptured: Authorities

The former Arkansas police chief who escaped prison while serving a 30-year sentence for murder and rape has been recaptured after nearly two weeks on the run, authorities said. Grant Hardin was captured by law enforcement officials Friday afternoon, approximately 1.5 miles west of the northern Arkansas prison he had escaped, according to the Izard County Sheriff's Office. His identity was confirmed by fingerprint analysis, the sheriff's office said. Hardin, 56, escaped the Calico Rock North Central Unit in Izard County on May 25 after donning a uniform and impersonating a corrections officer and being allowed to walk through a sally port pulling a cart. MORE: 'Evil man': Search continues for ex-police chief who escaped Arkansas prison Hardin, the former police chief of Gateway, Arkansas, pleaded guilty in October 2017 to first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of 59-year-old James Appleton, according to The Associated Press. He was also convicted of the 1997 rape of an elementary school teacher in Rogers, Arkansas, a crime highlighted in the 2023 television documentary "Devil in the Ozarks." During the search, officials deployed helicopters, drones and K9 officers. A U.S. Border Patrol tactical unit from Texas, known as BORTAC, had also been deployed to Arkansas to assist in the manhunt, officials said. Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders expressed gratitude for the local, state and federal law enforcement -- and especially thanked the Trump administration "for sending Border Patrol who helped track and apprehend Hardin." "Arkansans can breathe a sigh of relief because violent criminal Grant Hardin is now in custody," she said in a post on social media. MORE: US Border Patrol tactical unit deployed to help manhunt for escaped Arkansas inmate The FBI and U.S. Marshals offered a combined $25,000 reward for information leading to his capture. Arkansas officials urged residents of the surrounding Izard County to stay vigilant and lock the doors of their homes and vehicles following his escape. "I am very scared that this guy is going to hurt or kill somebody before this is over with," Stone County Sheriff Brandon Long told ABC News amid the manhunt. Nathan Smith, the former Benton County prosecutor who helped put Hardin behind bars, told Arkansas ABC affiliate KHBS the escaped inmate is "a sociopath."
