Trump bids farewell to Musk, assures DOGE will remain functional
Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Friday praised Elon Musk for doing a "fantastic job" as head of the DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) and assured that the department, founded by Musk to cut unnecessary funding and boost the US economy, will remain functional.
Addressing the press at the Oval Office with Elon Musk on his last day, Trump said. "Elon has worked tirelessly helping lead the most sweeping and consequential government reforms in generations."
Trump also assured that many of the DOGE employees are staying behind and suggested that Musk will remain integral in the project.
"Many of the DOGE people are staying behind, too, so they're not leaving, Elon is really not leaving. He's gonna be back and forth. I want to thank Elon for his time as a special government employee for coming and helping us."
The President also listed the contracts that were terminated after DOGE recommendations to help boost the economy.
"We have terminated many-many contracts and many contracts are being looked at and it may be six months or maybe a year or something in some cases. We are going through procedures, we are going through courts and we'll remember you (Elon Musk). DOGE cancelled USD 101 million for DEI contracts at the Department of Education. USD 59 million for illegal alien hotel rooms in New York City. USD 45 million for diversity, equity and inclusion scholarships in Burma. USD 42 million for social and behavioural change in Uganda, USD 40 million to improve the social and economic inclusion of migrants. USD 8 million for mice transgenders," Trump said.
Tesla CEO Musk reaffirmed that this is just the beginning of DOGE, and that the department's influence would only grow stronger with time.
"This is not the end of DOGE but really the beginning. My time as a special government employee really had to end. It was a limited time. The DOGE will only grow stronger with time. The DOGE influence will go stronger.
Musk added that he intends to give the president advice even as he closes out his time in the administration.
"I expect to continue to provide advice whenever the president would like advice," Musk said in response to a question from a reporter.
"I hope so," Trump chimed in.
"I expect to remain a friend and an adviser and certainly, if there's anything the president wants me to do, I'm at the president's service," Musk added.
Musk on Thursday announced his decision to step down as a 'Special Government Employee.'
In a post on X, he wrote, "As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government."
Earlier, Musk has criticised Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill', saying "I was disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decreases it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing."

Trump's Tariffs are back
A US Federal Court has blocked President Donald Trump's tariff, a major setback to his trade policies. The Manhattan-based three-judge court of International Trade said the US Constitution gave Congress exclusive powers to regulate commerce with other nations, but did not give the President unilateral authority to impose tariffs on all countries. However, the US Court of Appeals granted a temporary stay of the order. Speaking to The Times of Oman, R. Madhusoodanan, a former SBI Official and a financial expert based in Muscat, said, the court ruling has cheered the financial markets; however, with the temporary stay, the tariffs are back now. Typically, such vital decisions like changes in tariffs need to be approved by the Congress, but were bypassed by the President, according to the petitioners. After taking office as President in January 2025, Trump announced his tariff plan against most countries of the world, citing that the US is being treated unfairly in global trade, creating an imbalance in tariffs. His stance was that if they charge us, we charge them. He said, the higher tariffs announcement has caused several economic, political, and strategic impacts on both Advanced Economies (AEs) and Emerging Market (EM) Economies of the world. It has disrupted the established supply chains and slowed economic growth. Despite the 90 days pause on the tariffs announced on 9th April 2025 for countries excepting China and China on 11th of May 2025, after the de-escalation of the trade tension meeting held in Geneva between the two countries, the Trump administration continued to fuel global economic uncertainty with its unpredictable trade policies. This was evidenced by the announcement of a 50% tariff on the European Union(EU) effective from June 1st and later shifted to July 9th 2025. Reports also indicated that he threatened a 25% tariff on Apple if it continued to manufacture iPhones overseas. R. Madhusoodanan said, no countries are insulated from the adverse impacts of the tariff threat. The global economy has been affected due to the tariffs and retaliatory tariffs announcements. There are signs of economic slowdown in the US, China, among other countries. The US is well aware of the long-term impact of the tariffs, i.e. a possible downturn in the GDP growth along with a slowdown in the US exports and consumption. If continued, it will push up inflation and hurt employment in the US. The Chinese economy has also been affected by the tariff war. Its export to US fell sharply, impacting the country's enormous manufacturing sector. China had to roll out fresh economic stimulus to the affected sectors. Large-scale incentives and subsidies were given to companies to make their products and services more competitive in the global markets. China also had to introduce many austerity measures to tide it over the situation arising out of this. The Emerging Market(EM) Economies are also affected, but have taken steps to reduce their dependency on the US and have formed new trading blocs, he said. Earlier, the US has made it clear that the tariff rates will soon return to a 'reciprocal ' level if countries don't reach trade agreements during the 90-day pause. The disruptive trade agenda will not help any country, for that matter. Now with the ruling of the US Court, I believe there remains a possibility of a mutually beneficial long-lasting resolution that can restore the stability of global trade, R. Madhusoodanan said.

Rome's 'Hollywood on the Tiber' plans comeback despite Trump tariff threat
Europe's largest film studio Cinecitta is aiming to re-launch Italy as a movie powerhouse, even as U.S. President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on foreign productions cast a shadow over the film industry globally. Cinecitta, the homonymous company that manages Rome's historic film studio, approved a five-year plan this week backed by the EU's post-COVID Recovery Fund, which includes building new high-tech sound stages and boosting production capacity by 60% by 2026. "We want to lead the game," said CEO Manuela Cacciamani. "Cinecitta must be a factory that works at full capacity... with excellence as a minimum standard." Founded in 1937 under Benito Mussolini's fascist rule, Cinecitta became known as the "Hollywood on the Tiber". It has hosted over 3,000 films, attracting world-renowned directors such as Martin Scorsese, Federico Fellini and Francis Ford Coppola. "The hope is that two historic powers of cinema worldwide, (Italy and the U.S.) which owe so much to each other, will continue to cooperate," she said. Italy's tax credit of up to 40% for film production is "among the most competitive worldwide", Cinecitta said, helping attract some of last year's international successes such as "Emilia Perez" and the papal thriller "Conclave". Among projects slotted for filming in Cinecitta this year is Mel Gibson's "The Resurrection of The Christ", a sequel to his 2004 "The Passion of The Christ". Gibson is one of Trump's "Special Ambassadors" in Hollywood, tasked with rescuing the U.S. film industry alongside actors Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone. FBI Chief says it is investigating "targeted terror attack" in Colorado
Colorado: FBI Director Kash Patel said on Sunday that the agency is investigating a "targeted terror attack" in Boulder, Colorado. Police in Boulder are responding to the attack at the Pearl Street Mall, where they say several people have been injured, ABC News reported. The incident took place at the intersection of 13th Street and Pearl Street on Sunday afternoon (local time), ABC News reported. In a post on X, Patel stated, "We are aware of and fully investigating a targeted terror attack in Boulder, Colorado. Our agents and local law enforcement are on the scene already, and we will share updates as more information becomes available." Authorities have evacuated the area from Broadway to the west, Pine Street to the north and 16th Street to the east, and Walnut Street to the south and have been conducting the probe into the incident, as per the report.
