Report: Utah State finalizing new deal with Jerrod Calhoun
Utah State is working to finalize a new contract with coach Jerrod Calhoun as rumors swirl about interest in him from other schools.
CBS Sports reported Tuesday that the deal would make Calhoun, 43, No. 2 in salary in the Mountain West Conference behind Brian Dutcher of San Diego State, who took his team to the NCAA championship game in 2023.
According to the USA Today salary database for college basketball coaches, Dutcher made $2.4 million in the 2024-25 season, with Calhoun earning $1 million.
In his first season in Logan, Calhoun led the Aggies to a 26-8 record, which includes a first-round loss to UCLA in the NCAA Tournament.
Calhoun had been rumored as a strong candidate for the vacant job at West Virginia, where he was on the staff under former coach Bob Huggins from 2008-12.
Utah State has become a steppingstone job for coaches, and Aggies leadership clearly didn't want to transition to a new coach again. Calhoun was their fourth coach in five seasons.
Craig Smith held the job for three seasons (2018-21) before departing for Utah. Newly hired Virginia coach Ryan Odom followed him for the next two seasons before leaving for VCU. And Danny Sprinkle spent one season in Logan (2023-24) before taking over at Washington.

In a day full of emotional whiplash, Sunday's regionals ended in desolation at College Station, Texas. After the Aggies fell behind 6-0 to unseedeed Liberty, they stormed back to ultimately pull out a 14-11 win in eight innings and force a winner-take-all game against the Lady Flames. The Aggies then jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap before Liberty right fielder Rachel Roupe homered to open the scoring for Liberty. Texas A&M gave up another five runs to go down 6-3, before ultimately losing 6-5 following a spirited comeback attempt. "I'm just trying to process everything," Roupe said about the Flames' historic win on ESPN2 after the game. " ... Weight lifted off your shoulder. We were battling all day long. It took us, I don't know, many hours? Eight hours? Whatever we needed to do to get it done, we did it." This weekend, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko and his staff are hosting 18 prospects from the 2026 recruiting class, including six commitments in the cycle, providing another opportunity to capitalize on the program's early success in landing recruits in four-star wide receiver Aaron Gregory, and four-star running back Jonathan Hatton, who are both being heavily pursued by other programs this summer. Hatton was previously committed to Oklahoma before re-opening his recruitment and ultimately committing to the Aggies in late March.
