Portraits of San Diego: a culture of happiness
National Geographic Photographer Kiliii Yüyan is no stranger to travel, often spending months around the globe to understand the world through storytelling and photography. His adventures have taken him high above the Arctic Circle to the depths of tropical waters, capturing imagery of lionfish and other animals.
On a recent trip to San Diego, California, he took his storytelling prowess across the city to learn more about the culture, green and blue spaces, and community. What he found was that the city's infectious optimism offered a different kind of thrill.
'It's really hard not to feel the joy,' Yüyan says of his time in America's finest city. 'It was all around, all the time. I don't think that sort of unadulterated joy is everywhere.'
From a smiling guitarist in Balboa Park to a child running in and out of the Pacific Ocean at La Jolla Cove, Yüyan encountered San Diegans finding happiness in the simple act of being outside together. Those random interactions, he says, are just as meaningful for visitors who want to connect with the city.
'I think my San Diego experience would have been very different if I hadn't connected with anybody,' says Yüyan, who was trying to capture the cultural hub through his lens. 'I'm looking for intimate moments that are real, and there were lots of them to be had.'
Albert Lin and the Joy of Cultural Connection
To better understand the rich historical layers that shape San Diego's diverse cultural and ecological landscape, Yüyan meets with National Geographic Explorer Albert Lin. A scientist and storyteller, Lin has spent his career uncovering ancient civilizations around the world. Here in Albert's hometown, he brings that same passion for discovery to help Yüyan connect with the region's past to its vibrant present.
'Every year I spend here, I feel like I'm discovering something new,' says Lin.
The city is a cultural hub (almost 700,000 immigrants live here) and remains the most biologically diverse county in the continental United States.
Some of that diversity is on display at the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park. Here, exhibits showcase fossils of prehistoric sea creatures that once swam the waters covering the region, alongside a wealth of native plants and wildlife displays that reflect the county's varied ecosystems. Lin also introduces Yüyan to the museum's focus on the area's deep indigenous roots, including the Kumeyaay tribe, who've lived here for over 12,000 years.
In nearby Mission Trails Regional Park, Dr. Stanley Rodriguez, the Director of Kumeyaay Community College, shows how tangible those historic Indigenous connections remain when he takes the duo to well-worn, communal spaces where families ground local acorns into food sources for their families.
'That's part of the beauty of indigenous knowledge. It's all about place, and your connections to that place,' he says. 'He painted the picture for us, and I can just envision how beautiful that was.'
San Diego's breadth of diverse ecosystems still encourages community gatherings. Locals often take to these same green spaces for hiking and mountain biking. A reminder that centuries after the first people came through here, the land continues to serve the people who live here today.
Tara Monsod and the Joy of Community
At the open-air Tuna Harbor Dockside Market, Yüyan meets local executive chef Tara Monsod while she speaks with local fishermen and inspects spiny lobsters and uni. It is clear that the two-time James Beard-nominated chef visits for the community connection as much as the fresh, local ingredients themselves.
'The camaraderie here, it makes me happy,' says Monsod, who credits time with the fishmongers, farmers, and fellow chefs for her culinary success. 'I really enjoy my job. I just feel blessed every day to be able to do that.'
At the restaurants where she is the executive chef, Le Coq and Animae, Monsod mixes cross-cultural influence and local produce that comes from nearby farms. The combination of her culinary training, access to fresh ingredients, and inspiration from the community allows her to play with her food in bold and creative ways that are typically San Diegan, says Yüyan.
'[San Diego is a] place that you can allow your curiosity to roam,' says Yüyan. 'There's a lot of genuine joy and happiness, and people just letting down their hair, willing to be vulnerable in front of each other.'
Rob Machado and the Joy of Natural Spaces
At La Jolla Shores, Yüyan connects with environmentalist and former professional surfer, Rob Machado. Fans–young, old, and new–bashfully approach the icon and are met with warm hugs and a wide smile. Community connection is at the heart of his passion, says Machado, who works with two charities, the Rob Machado Foundation and Challenged Athletes Foundation, to help others find the joy that surfing in San Diego has given to him, and to foster a love for the land. His work with the Challenged Athletes Foundation empowers differently abled youth to embrace surfing.
'For me, sharing the stoke of surfing is the greatest gift to give someone,' says Machado.
Machado's joy was palpable, says Yuyan, who spent time watching Machado interact with the young athletes.
'The joy on Rob's face. [He's] so, so proud of them. It's so pure,' says Yüyan. This connection between Rob and the athletes, along with the way surfing integrates mind, body, and soul, is a reflection of how so many San Diegans approach life—living with presence and joy.
Whether in its parks, on its shores, or in its kitchens, Yüyan found the people of San Diego have captured the unique ability to be fully present in their joy. And visitors who want in on the action are welcome.
'San Diego makes me optimistic,' says Yüyan. 'This is a place where people can live, work, play, and feel like a community. You rarely see that in any large place in a big city, and it helps you see the world a little differently.'

‘Ocean' goes deep to look at highs, lows of deep blue seas
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The new National Geographic special 'Ocean with David Attenborough' offers a look at the deep blue seas through a style that almost mimics water movement. There are calm moments that discuss the beauty and wonder of the ocean world but that gives way to a tsunami of information as to the troubles facing the water world. Then it returns to another calming moment before another crash. Director Toby Nowlan explains that the structure of the production that is now available on the National Geographic Channel was to examine the overarching theme of hope and then show the juxtaposition with the damage being done to the seas. 'The theme is we are living in the age of the greatest ocean discovery, and it is David's story of ocean discovery in the last 100 years, his lifetime,' Nowlan says. 'Through that lens you are seeing this ocean of wonder where every year we are discovering things that are transforming our idea of how vital the ocean is. 'Then there is the importance of the discovery of what we are doing to the seas and how we are demolishing the seabed. Just the act of showing some of that footage for the first time, the images speak for themselves.' Pilot Peter Weber lands on NBC's 'Destination X' Nowlan points out the last big wave of the documentary looks at there is real reason to hope to protect the oceans. What the team found was that areas of the ocean that have been devastated will recover far quicker than the way dry land rebounds. The director comes to 'Ocean' having worked on a variety of projects dealing with nature. His credits include 'Our Planet,' 'Deadly Pole to Pole' and 'Wild Arabia.' In the feature-length special Attenborough draws on his lifetime of exploration and knowledge of the sea to take audiences on a journey through the planet's most spectacular undersea habitats. Attenborough investigates diverse marine ecosystems, from bustling giant kelp jungles and coral reefs to towering seamount outposts within the open ocean. These are all revealed to be intricately connected, vital to avoiding climate catastrophe, and in peril due to destructive forms of fishing. While Attenborough exposes the greatest threats to our oceans' health, he points to inspirational stories from around the world to reveal the most remarkable finding of all: If we take action now, the opportunity for marine life to recover on an unprecedented scale is well within our reach. Attenborough's more than 70 years filming the natural world has made him the world's preeminent natural historian. The English broadcaster, writer, and naturalist is best known for his award-winning BBC documentaries, including 'Life on Earth,' 'Frozen Planet,' and the 'Blue Planet' series. His work has brought the natural world into homes and classrooms, inspiring millions and motivating action towards preservation. Brandi Passante keeps looking for 'Storage Wars' treasures Nowlan stresses that the purpose of the film is to show that when it comes to the ocean, efforts to correct problems will be beneficial to every living creature or if ignored would spell total catastrophic disasters. The documentary is filled with undersea footage that is so stunning it rivals any CGI work done in feature films. Director Keith Scholey is quick to point out that there were no computer-generated images used in the film. He says the reason the movie has such a stunning look comes from the initial plans to open the documentary in theaters. 'We made a lot of feature films before and we know that is kind of a high bar,' Scholey says. 'The starting point is the cinematographer. Underwater we have the best in the world in Doug Anderson who is not only a superb diver and superb underwater naturalist, but he has an incredible sense of natural composition. 'I think one of the reasons the images look different is Doug and his eye.' Scholey knows the importance of cinematographers having worked on 'Guardians of the Galapagos,' 'Life on Our Planet' and 'Polar Bear.' 'Ballerina' dances its way to a bloody good time Both men agree that the most vital part of the production was Attenborough. Despite being one year shy of reaching 100 years old, Attenborough continues to bring energy to every project. Scholey – who has worked with Attenborough for 44 years – says, 'I met him when he was in his mid-50s, and he had it then, a huge energy and power. He has remained this person in his mid-50s because of his constant thirst for information, a constant interest in the world. 'I think it is that that keeps him modern all the time. The only way you can tell he has aged is that his accent has changed over time. Because that has happened because he has been modernizing himself.' Ho-Chunk paddled from Green Bay to Milwaukee in dugout canoe to highlight tribal history
Along the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan on June 5, members of the Ho-Chunk Nation could be seen paddling in a traditional handmade, dugout canoe. The paddle event marked the end of a four-day journey that took them from Green Bay and Sturgeon Bay in Door County along ancestral Indigenous waterways. Along the way, members of the tribe honored their ancestors at Milwaukee's Lake Park, home to one of the last remaining Indigenous mounds in the city. The journey is part of a broader effort to raise awareness of the tribe's historic presence in the area. 'All of this land used to be ours at one time,' said Clayton Winneshiek, traditional chief of the Ho-Chunk Nation. Tribal members invited local officials, academics and anyone who wanted to join them in the canoe and learn about their cultural ties to the land and water. 'The dugout canoe journey is more than a trip – it's a cultural reclamation,' said Ho-Chunk Nation President Jon Greendeer in a statement on Facebook. 'As we paddle these waters we carry the stories of our ancestors, reconnect with the land and lake, and invite others to learn with us.' In 2018, Dane County gifted the Ho-Chunk Nation a large cottonwood trunk. Ho-Chunk youth then carved the canoe out of the single piece of wood, much like the ones their ancestors made thousands of years ago. In recent years, at least 10 of these ancient canoes have been discovered in Lake Mendota in Madison. More: Archeologists find at least 8 more canoes on bottom of Lake Mendota, one 4,500 years old The annual canoe journey started in 2022 with a voyage from the four lakes in Madison then south to Beloit. Overall, the long paddle trips serve as an excellent tool to educate the public, according to William Quackenbush, the Ho-Chunk Nation's tribal historic preservation officer, who leads the journeys. While in Milwaukee on June 5 members of the Ho-Chunk canoe journey visited Indigenous ancestors buried in Lake Park to bring attention to preservation efforts of an ancient Indigenous burial mound in the park. The ancient mound is one of the last in the city. The mound is about 40 feet in diameter and two feet high overlooking Lake Michigan near Lake Drive and Locust Street. It was built by Indigenous people during what archaeologists call the Middle Woodland Culture between 300 B.C. and A.D. 400. Milwaukee once held thousands of these ancient Indigenous mounds, but nearly all of them were destroyed by development during the past 150 years. An identifying plaque was placed on top of the mound in 1910, but that was recently removed because it encouraged people to walk on it to read it. Tribal members are working with county and city park officials to figure out the best way to keep the mound, which is located near a softball field, protected. 'We (Ho-Chunk) don't have the jurisdiction to protect the mound,' Quackenbush said. 'The city, county and historical society have the jurisdiction. We want to hold them to task to do it.' More: Milwaukee's last ancient Indigenous mound has a problem Quackenbush and the Ho-Chunk Nation have been leading efforts to protect and preserve the remaining ancient Indigenous mounds in Wisconsin from destructive development and other threats. Academics debate who actually built the mounds and which tribe's ancestors are buried in them. But Quackenbush said his people do not doubt it is their ancestors who built and who are buried in the mounds as "ancestrally, we have deep roots to this location." Quackenbush said other tribes, such as the Potawatomi, have passed through the Milwaukee area and claimed it for a time in its thousands of years of Indigenous history, but the Ho-Chunk were among the first people here. He said the Ho-Chunk Nation does not try to deny any tribe the right to claim the Milwaukee area as their ancestral home, as well. Across the Pacific: Palauan Voyagers Renew Austronesian Bonds in Taitung
TAITUNG, June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Taitung County Government invited the Palauan-led multinational crew of the traditional sailing canoe Alingano Maisu, which brought together sailors from across the greater Micronesia region and Taiwan. The crew has recently completed a remarkable cultural voyage from Palau to Taitung, Taiwan, as part of a broader Austronesian exchange. With their return voyage now underway, the journey served not only as a reaffirmation of shared heritage but also as a fresh chapter in the living story of oceanic kinship. The crew was welcomed with a traditional ceremony led by the Dulan Youth Group, featuring ceremonial chants and protective dance performances—an expression of ancestral ties and mutual respect among Austronesian peoples. At the Taitung County Government Hall, a Voyaging Culture Sharing Forum was held, where the navigators shared their experiences crossing the Pacific and their traditional knowledge of celestial navigation. In return, local boatbuilders engaged in dialogue, sharing insights into their own seafaring culture and strengthening a shared reverence for the ocean. During their stay, the guest voyagers visited several Indigenous communities along Taiwan's eastern coast. In the Amis community of Duli, they took part in hands-on workshops exploring traditional cigarette rolling, fishing techniques, and even rice wine brewing—experiences that offered a deeper appreciation of Indigenous craftsmanship and knowledge passed down through generations. The journey also included a scenic ride on the antique "Breezy Blue" express train, which hugs the coastline between Taitung and Jinlun. This allowed the visitors to soak in the spectacular sea-and-sky vistas, through open windows, and gain further insight into the region's history and lifestyle. Cultural exchange extended to the table as well. Besides enjoying meticulously prepared Indigenous meals, the crew also experienced Taiwan's signature hotpot culture. Sitting around the steaming pot, guests and hosts shared stories, laughter, and flavors—reminding all that food is one of the most powerful ways to build bridges between islands. Local Amis hosts presented the voyagers with betel nuts, hand-carved wooden badges, and even ukuleles—symbols of friendship and cultural pride. The crew also participated in the opening of the Kavulungan Cultural Park, a major cultural event celebrating the traditions of the Paiwan people. The visit concluded with a joyful farewell banquet filled with music, dance, and heartfelt connection—bringing the entire journey full circle. Through this voyage centered on voyaging culture, traditional maritime skills were not only honored but reawakened.
