BRITAIN'S first American-style shopping centre will be demolished this year - and work is set to start in weeks.
The Viking Centre in Jarrow, near Newcastle is being partially pulled down as part of a major revamp.

The plans have been given the go ahead from the council and demolition works are set to commence in the coming weeks.
As part of the demolition a number of vacant units will be pulled down including the beloved former Wilko building on the corner of Bede Precinct and Ellison Street.
Also being torn down are a number of former charity shops.
But it's not all bad news with locals relieved to hear that the Jarrow Buffs Social Club at 96 Ellison Street will remain untouched.

The major overhaul is aimed at opening up space for future developments on the site.
The work is due to start in July and will be finished by 1 December 2025, meaning the site could be ready just in time for the busy Christmas season.
The application for the demolition was submitted earlier this year by Sheet Anchor Investments Limited, the owners of the site, and was approved on April 29, 2025.
No objections were received during the public consultation period.
Planning officers noted that the method of demolition was appropriate for the site and that the restoration plans would leave the area in a 'tidy condition'.
The buildings will be knocked down using a top-down method.

This means the roof will be removed first, followed by the perimeter walls.
The units will then be demolished down to 'slab level'.
This comes as part of a string of demolitions across the country.
The once-thriving Broadmarsh shopping centre in Nottingham is set to be pulled down, sparking fierce backlash from locals.
Once a bustling hotspot in the 90s, Broadmarsh has stood abandoned since 2020 when its former operator collapsed into administration.
Now, years of decay could soon come to an end.
Homes England, the government agency tasked with boosting affordable housing, has snapped up the site and submitted major plans to Nottingham City Council.
They want permission to bulldoze the derelict structure and kick start a huge redevelopment project in the heart of the city.
The £650 million revamp promises 1,000 new homes, 20,000 square metres of retail, office, and community space, and around 2,000 full-time jobs once finished.

Tottenham are prioritising the appointment of their new head coach but there is recognition that they must now act quickly following a slow start to their summer transfer business Tottenham's hesitance over the future of Ange Postecoglou has already seen them miss out on two midfielders and now they want to get a deal for the Aussie's successor in place to avoid missing out on further targets. Fulham's Marco Silva remains another name of interest but barring a significant U-turn, it looks as though Spurs will push ahead with a swoop for Frank, whose Brentford contract contains a significant buy-out clause. The Bees head coach is thought to have a good relationship with Spurs technical director and compatriot Johan Lange, who is expected to remain at the club and he'll also be tasked with overseeing transfer business alongside the likely returning Fabio Paratici. Spurs have already lost key ground in the market, England international Angel Gomes, a player Tottenham had been pursuing, has opted to join Marseille on a free transfer after also snubbing West Ham. Gomes' contract with Lille is set to expire at the end of the month but he now looks poised to remain in France after warming to the idea of working with Roberto De Zerbi. Meanwhile, Real Betis' American maestro Johnny Cardoso has agreed to join Atletico Madrid, providing a club-to-club deal can be struck. Last summer, Spurs negotiated a £21million first-option clause - that can only be triggered during a two-week window - on USMNT starlet Cardoso when selling Giovani Lo Celso to Betis. But it now looks as though Atletico will pounce and conclude a deal at a higher price for the highly-rated 23-year-old, who is not willing to wait around for Tottenham. Names of continued interest are the likes of Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze, who has a £68m buy-out clause (worth £60m + £8m in add-ons) that becomes active this summer, and Eagles skipper Marc Guehi while the Europa League winners were also tracking Bryan Mbeumo. Mbeumo has intimated that he wants to join Manchester United, who have had a £55m bid rejected and it remains to be seen if Tottenham-linked Frank could potentially swing the balance and convince his current player to join him in north London, if he lands the job. Ultimately, until Spurs know who their new manager is going to be - he will have a clear say on targets - it's difficult to envisage them splashing out on mega-money deals. Business will also likely be shaped by potential outgoings with Cristian Romero and captain Heung-min Son among those that could yet seek to pursue new challenges. Inevitably, they would need to be replaced with quality. Spurs remain keen on signing Mathys Tel on a permanent basis but they want to negotiate with Bayern Munich and won't be triggering their mooted £45m buy-option. It warned strikes could "ground planes and passengers". Pat McIlvogue, Unite industrial officer, said walkouts could be held from the middle of July. More than 100 Swissport workers are locked in a dispute about rotas and work-life balance, according to Unite. It said the company "is demanding that workers at extreme short notice have to work shifts at various times and for various durations, which is directly impacting on their personal lives". Unite said some Swissport staff are "struggling with chronic fatigue". A further 250 ICTS Central Search workers, who deal with passengers directly in the security search area and process them for flights, are currently involved in a dispute over under-staffing, working conditions and pay. A total of 120 workers employed by Glasgow Airport Limited have rejected a basic 3.6% pay increase, with staff including airport ambassadors, airside support officers, engineers and managers involved. The same 3.6% pay increase was rejected by 50 Falck firefighters who perform fire safety functions at the airport. Meanwhile 300 Menzies Aviation workers, including dispatchers, allocators, airside agents and controllers, have rejected a basic uplift worth around 4.25%. The union recently announced a series of what it said were wage wins for 100 North Air workers across Scottish airports, and more than 140 staff based at Glasgow Airport employed by ABM and OCS. Shock moment brazen Manchester Airport worker WEES on driver's Range Rover in long-stay carpark Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "Hundreds of workers at Glasgow Airport are heading towards summer strike action which would ground planes and passengers. "The companies involved are all highly profitable and can easily afford to give our members better pay and working conditions. "The truth is that they are denying fair pay increases to cynically boost their profits." Mr McIlvogue said: "Unite is in dispute with companies at Glasgow Airport which could ultimately bring hundreds of workers out on strike. "The companies can resolve these disputes with Unite before that situation happens by addressing the legitimate concerns and pay aspirations of our members. "If the companies refuse to work with Unite to resolve these disputes, then we will have no option but to open strike ballots. This could mean strike action happening from the middle of July." A spokesperson for Swissport said: "We are in dialogue with Unite - the talks so far have been constructive and we remain focused on working together to address the issues being raised." Phil Lloyd, senior vice president UK, Menzies Aviation, said: "Following the rejection of recent pay award proposals, we remain committed to seeking a resolution, and have in fact met with Unite today to make an enhanced offer, with a follow-up session scheduled. "We hope to reach an agreement which is workable for both the business and our employees at Glasgow Airport. "We continue to work towards an agreeable solution to protect services for our airline and airport partners and their customers." ‘Mouth-watering' chocolate brand that disappeared from supermarkets is back
The big UK supermarkets aren't exactly short of options when it comes to chocolate, with own-brand bars and treats, as well as products by big names like Cadbury, Tony's and Nestlé. But there's one brand that's been notably missing from the likes of Tesco and Sainsbury's for the last five years as it swapped supermarket shelves for luxury retailers, and that's GODIVA. Founded in Brussels in 1926, the chocolate brand began with pralines and the business is named after the legend of Lady Godiva. It's been sold in the UK for years in high-end stores like Harrods and Selfridges and even has its own flagship store in Covent Garden, but the chocolates haven't been widely available in supermarkets. GODIVA's first foray into supermarkets came in 2017, when the brand partnered with Sainsbury's to sell its Belgian chocolates, but it disappeared from shelves there in 2020. However, that's all about to change as the 100-year-old brand is making a supermarket comeback and has just launched its version of the viral Dubai chocolate bar in Tesco. But, of course, there's a catch. The chocolate treat – a Pistacho & Kadayif bar which sees GODIVA milk chocolate wrapped around crunchy pistachios and crispy Kadayif pastry pieces – is only available at Tesco for a limited time. And when we say limited, we aren't joking. Shoppers now have just over a week to get their hands on it at their local supermarket, as it'll only be sold there until June 17. What's more, the premium bar doesn't come cheap with an RRP of £10, though those with a Clubcard will be able to save a little, getting it for £7.95. According to GODIVA, this new bar is a reimagined and more accessible version of their usual Dubai-style chocolate bar, which is sold in Harrods for £24.95. Speaking about the launch, Isabella Rogers, chief marketing officer at GODIVA, said: 'Inspired by the viral Dubai-style chocolate trend, our new GODIVA Crispy Kadayif & Pistachio Chocolate offers an effortless way for more people to experience our premium take on this indulgent sensation for a limited time only on the high street. 'From the signature GODIVA milk chocolate couverture to the delicate crunch of pistachios and crisp golden Kadayif, it's a true feast for the senses – designed for those who may not make it to our Covent Garden boutique but still want a taste of luxury.' The brand has a strong fan base, with reviewers on Yelp hailing it as 'expensive but well worth it', 'the finest chocolates to be had in the capital', 'mouth-watering' and 'the best chocolate in London' and 'delicious' in numerous four and five star posts about the Covent Garden chocolate shop. This comes after a number of other chocolate brands recently shared exciting news, including Cadbury. The iconic brand has unveiled brand new Dairy Milk bars for summer, with one new flavour plus fun colour-changing packaging. There's an Iced Latte Dairy Milk chocolate bar, which combines smooth coffee cream, biscuit pieces and the classic taste of Cadbury chocolate and four temperature-activated packets, which visually transform when the chocolate is chilled. Yes, that's right, in a somewhat unexpected move, Cadbury is actively encouraging people to put their chocolate bars in the fridge. More Trending The new cold-activated packs will look like ordinary purple Dairy Milk bars – until they are popped in the fridge. Using thermochromic technology, the temperature change will reveal one of four vibrant summer-themed designs as the wrapper changes colour to reveal a deep blue image. Elsewhere, Mars Wrigley, has just confirmed that the 'best' Maltesers are making a comeback after 11 years. (That's the white chocolate version, in case you didn't know.) First launched in 2003, White Chocolate Maltesers were a fan-favourite before being discontinued in 2014 and people have spent more than a decade begging for them to return.
