
How Harnessing AI Can Transform Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are an essential part of medical breakthroughs that help patients, but getting them off the ground and running them is often fraught with challenges. Specifically, qualification, activation, compliance and data monitoring and analysis can be complex, resource-intensive, time-consuming and expensive for pharmaceutical researchers.
Consider this: Many clinical trials aren't able to even move past the recruitment and enrollment stage. According to Deloitte , a 'study on the benefits of virtual randomized clinical trials shows that more than 80% of in-person studies are delayed because of insufficient patient recruitment, while 80% of research sites fail to meet enrollment goals.' Once past the initial stage, other problems can arise. As noted in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery , one report assessed 7,455 drug development programs that went 'through the clinic between 2006 and 2015.' The researchers 'found that the probability of success was 63% in Phase I trials, 31% in Phase II trials, 58% in Phase III trials and 85% during the regulatory review process, for an overall success rate of 9.6%.'
However, pharmaceutical companies can leverage AI to overcome challenges and streamline the clinical trial landscape.
There are several key ways AI can help pharmaceutical companies address common challenges associated with clinical trials.
For one, AI can be used to improve patient recruitment. When patients have doctor's visits, physicians capture critical data, such as concerns discussed and any medications that were prescribed, via electronic health records (EHRs). Currently, pharmaceutical researchers depend on physicians to pinpoint who might qualify for a clinical trial. In the hectic day-to-day of providing patient care, physicians may not remember which patients qualify and which don't. That's where AI can step in. AI can sift through structured and unstructured EHR data, such as diagnoses, lab results, prescriptions and physicians' notes, to match patients with trial criteria more efficiently than physicians having to rely on memory alone.
From there, AI can be used to activate patient engagement. Through an app or an EHR system, physicians can receive notes that particular patients qualify or are strong candidates for given clinical trials—and can also get guidance on the details they need to share with patients, such as the purpose of the trial and next steps for getting involved (if the patient expresses interest in doing so).
Once patients enroll, researchers can use AI to monitor compliance and analyze feedback during trials. For instance, if patients have to take a medication twice a day, they can get push notifications on their phones, reminding them when it's time to take their medication and instructing them to indicate when they've finished taking the medication. AI can keep track of which patients have completed the task and which haven't—and then message them appropriately. Additionally, patients can input their feedback, such as their adverse side effects, into an app or system. AI can then analyze that feedback, uncovering common threads and outliers to present to researchers. Researchers won't have to spend hours combing through the data themselves. Instead, they can gain a quick understanding of the risks and benefits of their drugs and adjust accordingly. The Risks Of Using AI In Clinical Trials
AI can streamline clinical trials, but it's not without risks. AI should be used as an assistive tool for clinical trials, not a replacement for human expertise and judgment.
While AI tools offer value, they aren't infallible. Human oversight is crucial. Researchers and physicians should proactively review the recommendations that AI tools make. For example, an AI tool might indicate that a patient is a good fit for a clinical trial, but a physician might decide that, say, based on a contraindication, they shouldn't participate in the trial.

Leaders of pharmaceutical companies who are considering implementing AI for clinical trials should consider a crawl, walk, run approach—starting with specific use cases in their clinical trials, rather than fully overhauling their approaches at once.
Rolling out AI for clinical trials is a major organizational change. And given the stakes in clinical trials, pharmaceutical leaders should be extra cautious. By implementing AI in stages, pharmaceutical leaders can pace themselves and their teams, get a stronger sense of what is effective for patients and adjust as needed.
By streamlining clinical trials, particularly the clinical matching process, pharmaceutical companies can save time and money—and allocate that time and money to research and development. Ultimately, using AI in clinical trials can help drugs get launched sooner, helping more patients.

From idea to impact: How Yes SF continues to spur a new wave of innovation in San Francisco
When Deloitte collaborated with the World Economic Forum, Salesforce, Citi, and the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce to launch the Yes SF initiative in 2023, it was a bit of an experiment in and of itself. The goal? To help revitalize downtown San Francisco by elevating and supporting the growth of leading innovations in urban sustainability and cultivate an ecosystem of organizations to deploy those solutions locally, while supporting innovators through the revitalization jump-starting a local network of start-ups that could spur economic growth and diversify the economy in a way that is better for people and the planet. Yes SF is spurring a movement The program began as an innovation challenge calling for solutions to many of San Francisco's sustainability and revitalization goals. Fourteen companies — 'Top Innovators' — were chosen from 150 applicants. Since the program's inception, more than $60 million has been invested in San Francisco and many of these Top Innovators, and the momentum continues to build. For example, Butlr, which creates thermal, privacy-first sensors, is now deployed in the Salesforce Tower. it's electric recently launched a new wave of curbside EV charging stations in the city. And BluumBio, Flower Turbines, Urban Machine, Zauben, and more are expanding their presence with local hires and new deployments that are helping to spur San Francisco's economy. Meet the second cohort: Where sustainability meets AI In April, Yes SF announced its second cohort of Top Innovators. The new cohort is centered at the intersection of sustainability and AI. Top Innovators are harnessing data and cutting-edge technology to tackle daunting challenges such as resource management (including energy generation and efficiency and biodegradable packaging) as well as transportation and mobility (including microgrids and autonomous last-mile delivery solutions). The program intentionally choses startups that are early stage but ready to deploy. And, with the broad support Yes SF provides, these founders can build here and help advance the city's collective journey toward urban transformation and sustainability. What companies are getting — and giving back One of the most powerful roles Yes SF plays is convening and connecting San Francisco's innovation ecosystem. When the program began, I don't think any of us anticipated just how deeply the community would lean in. Today, nearly 60 organizations have joined the program, including large corporations and community institutions offering everything from research and development space to marketing support and mentorship. Thanks to the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, Top Innovators can participate in information sessions related to doing business in San Francisco, get help navigating the permitting process, and receive support to build and scale their solutions. They also get visibility at events like Dreamforce, San Francisco Climate Week, and even the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. That combination of practical support and high-level visibility helps make this initiative quite powerful. WSL revenues will pass £100m in 2026, says Deloitte
Total revenues of Women's Super League (WSL) clubs grew by 34 per cent to £65m in the 2023-24 season and are tipped to hit £100m for the first time next year, says Deloitte. All income streams were up but the biggest increase was a 73 per cent uplift in matchday revenue to £12m, thanks to higher attendances and more games held in large stadiums. Commercial revenue from sponsorship deals rose 53 per cent to £26m while broadcast income was up 40 per cent to £10m, according to Deloitte's Annual Review of Football Finance. The firm is forecasting WSL clubs' revenues to surpass £100m in the coming season, as a result of continuing growth and this summer's Women's Euros in Switzerland. 'Through developing more robust fan engagement strategies, strong commercial deals and securing central distributions, WSL clubs unlocked a new phase of growth in the 2023-24 season,' said Jennifer Haskel, knowledge and insights lead in the Deloitte Sports Business Group. The figures may only be 'scratching the surface on the value now being generated by the women's game' due to inconsistencies in the way clubs report their finances, Haskel added. It comes after Chelsea Women were controversially valued at £200m by the sale of a minority stake to Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian earlier this year. 'The high-profile investment and innovative brand partnerships announced in recent months demonstrate the value gained when women's teams are treated as distinct entities with a focus on driving specific initiatives tailored to the fans and commercial partners alike,' Haskel said. 'This mindset must be maintained for the future growth of the women's game, or we risk missing a generational opportunity in this sport.' While the average WSL team's revenue increased from £4m to £5.4m and all sides experienced double digit growth, there remains a yawning gap between the top and bottom. The four biggest-earning clubs – Arsenal (£15.3m), Chelsea (£11.5m), Manchester United (£9.2m) and Manchester City (£6.6m) – generated two thirds of total WSL revenue. Teams' aggregate pre-tax losses grew from £21m to £28m while wage costs were up 44 per cent to £52m, with salaries accounting for 81 per cent of clubs' income. 'For long-term growth to take place, competitive balance is a key priority,' said Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte Sports Business Group. 'With the gap widening between the highest and lowest-earning clubs within the league, there's a risk that this will lessen the jeopardy on pitch and the attention of fans. 'Sealing investment and commercial deals across the league, alongside implementing cost control interventions, may counter this to promote long-term stability across the pyramid. 'Women's football in England is evolving rapidly. While challenges remain, it is clear there is potential for a passionate and engaged fanbase to drive the game's development. 'Continued growth of the WSL and the women's game more widely will require dedicated investment and attention, as well as allocation of the right resources. 'Capitalising on major international tournaments is important at specific points in time, but sustainable growth hinges on the domestic league's organic development.'

No factory experience? No problem. Siemens trains new workers for manufacturing careers.
US manufacturing is set to add 3.8 million jobs, but a talent shortage threatens to leave many unfilled. Siemens is hiring based on soft skills and training workers from all backgrounds. The approach is boosting retention and performance — and Siemens is scaling it nationwide. Manufacturing is having a resurgence in the US — and with it comes a massive demand for talent. The industry is expected to add 3.8 million jobs over the next decade, but because of a wave of Baby Boomer retirements and a widening skills gap, as many as half of those roles could go unfilled. The challenge isn't just filling roles. There is a real need for workforce development and helping employees build skills that support their goals today and into the future. And for manufacturers, investing in talent pays off. According to Deloitte, employees who believe they're gaining valuable skills are 2.7 times less likely to leave their jobs. Rethinking workforce development US manufacturers can't afford to be passive in the wake of such a significant talent shortage. It will take proactive and innovative approaches to cultivate workers for skilled roles. This includes lowering the barrier to entry for people who have never set foot in a factory and rethinking how training is done from day one. Siemens is one company leading that charge. The global technology company recently opened a 500,000-square-foot facility in Fort Worth, TX where it produces switchboards needed to electrify AI data centers. The plant has already brought 480 new jobs to the region, with plans to create more than 800 by 2026. But hiring at that scale requires a new playbook. Siemens knew it couldn't rely solely on traditional on-the-job training, so it took an unconventional route: bringing in educators. "We hired former teachers and school administrators and had our subject matter experts teach them the content so they could build a training curriculum," said Dr. Khourie Jones, Siemens training manager for the Fort Worth facility and former educator. Turning high school grads and pizza delivery drivers into manufacturing leaders To meet hiring needs, Siemens cast a wide net and put less emphasis on manufacturing experience. Instead, the company focused on soft skills: a willingness to learn, a strong work ethic, and a growth mindset. "If you come in with those things, then we're able to equip you with the skills to be successful in the manufacturing plant," Jones said. "We've hired a former chef, someone who was delivering pizzas, and a young person right out of high school. All of them have quickly become high-performers and leaders at the plant." The successes of these individuals is thanks in part to a new training model built around how people actually learn. New hires go through a four- to five-week program that starts with classroom learning, moves into a hands-on lab, and finishes with shadowing on the factory floor. "We were careful to consider all learning styles and make the classroom engaging when building our curriculum," Jones said. "Many employees happen to be hands-on learners, so they thrive in the latter stages of the training when they can apply the book learning." Good training gets results As a result of the new training approach, Siemens has seen growth from day one in each trainee and higher-than-expected retention rates among employees. The new training model has been so successful that the company now plans to roll out similar training programs at other facilities nationwide. But it's not just about curriculum, it's also about culture. "People often think of warehouses as gloomy and boring," Jones said. "We prioritize building a positive and energetic environment that encourages workers to see their career opportunities as endless." The bigger picture? By swapping rigid requirements for teachable skills and designing training that meets workers where they are, Siemens is redefining what it takes to thrive in modern manufacturing. The goal is simple: Make it easier for anyone — from any background — to step into a meaningful career.
