More than 100 killed as deadly floods hit Nigerian town

Yahoo5 days ago

Authorities in Nigeria's northern Niger state say more than 100 people have been killed after floods triggered by heavy rainfall hit Mokwa, a vibrant market town in the largely agricultural state.
Ibrahim Hussaini, a spokesperson for the state's emergency management agency, told CNN that 115 bodies, including those of 'many children' have been recovered as of 3 p.m. (10 a.m. ET) Friday.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescuers search for more bodies, he added.
The West African nation's disaster relief agency (NEMA) stated in an earlier announcement that the floods struck the Kpege neighborhood of Mokwa early Thursday, 'when residents were mostly asleep.'
The Niger state government said the 'deadly flood disaster' ravaged two communities in the town 'after several hours of heavy downpour' leading to the 'loss of many lives' and 'buildings submerged.'
It described the incident as 'saddening, heartbreaking and pathetic.'
Northern Nigeria is prone to annual floods that often lead to deaths and displacement.
Last year, weeks of flooding across the region caused over 200 deaths and displaced more than 386,000 people, according to data from NEMA, shared with CNN.
The area was also affected in 2022 when Nigeria recorded its worst flooding in more than a decade.
More than 600 people were killed across the country during that incident with more than 1 million people forced out of their homes.

House Democrat Slams His Party For 'Enriching Themselves' And Outlines Path To Beat Trump

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.) appears to have learned a lot from former Vice President Kamala Harris' disastrous 2024 campaign, and is slamming his own party for being 'focused on enriching themselves' rather than defeating President Donald Trump. Garcia argued as much during an appearance Tuesday on MSNBC's 'The Weeknight,' and while this wasn't the first time he urged his colleagues to reflect on why they lost last year's election to Trump, he appeared more frustrated and brutally honest than ever. 'What we have to do as a party is focus on a few things,' Garcia said Tuesday. 'First is making it very clear that we are the anti-corruption party. We're the party that believes in democracy and the rule of law and supporting working families and the American public.' 'Right now, we have an administration that is completely focused on enriching themselves and their family,' he continued. 'They are stealing from the American public, from working-class people, to enrich themselves and their billionaire friends.' The panel of rapt MSNBC hosts, including Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez, appeared utterly captivated by his message, which the lawmaker argued Democrats must 'do a better job of communicating' on a daily basis to dejected voters. Garcia notably co-chaired Harris' campaign, which only had some 100 days to run against Trump after she became the Democratic nominee. Her loss spawned public frustration within the party, whose members couldn't understand how they lost to Trump — yet again. Garcia acknowledged Tuesday that Democrats failed because they 'didn't convince the American public that we're on their side,' but argued that the party's current resistance to Trump's executive orders and seemingly open corruption is winning voters over. 'Every week that goes by, we're getting stronger,' he said. 'We're honing in on our message, and when I'm ... talking to people, going to town halls, people are reacting to the aggressive approach that we're taking, and they like it. We've gotta be out there and fight.' Steele went on to ask arguably the only important question, namely how Democrats can possibly win people over with promises of health care or a stable economy if they can't even stop Trump from defying judges, deporting people or arresting mayors. 'I think, one, we've got to call out every single lie, every single attack on Democracy, every time they try to intimidate members of Congress or the public,' Garcia suggested. 'We have got to call it out. We can't be afraid of putting it all out on the table.' 'The American public understands, and the American public wants to see us fight,' he said. NFL Network to air 2 Panthers games during 2025 preseason

NFL Network to air 2 Panthers games during 2025 preseason The Carolina Panthers are going to get a little extra exposure this summer. As announced on Wednesday, the NFL Network is set to cover 21 live preseason games in August—including two that feature the Panthers. Those contests will both emanate from Bank of America Stadium, with Carolina hosting the Cleveland Browns on Friday, Aug. 8 at 7:00 p.m. ET (Week 1) and the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday, Aug. 21 at 7:00 p.m. ET (Week 3). Their opener against Cleveland will be preceded by a joint practice, something head coach Dave Canales talked about earlier this offseason. "We were just both curious about getting this joint practice going into preseason, and we got excited about the format of what that could look like,' Canales said of Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski at March's league meetings. "We feel like at that point in camp, you're starting to build some good capacity to be able to handle a little bit more volume, a little higher speed, and getting the competitive element. Particularly because we both plan on playing our guys in the preseason." Carolina's second exhibition outing, which locks them up with the Houston Texans, will also follow a joint practice. That matchup is slated for Saturday, Aug. 16 at 1:00 p.m. ET. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
