Lyttelton police drone pilot honoured for exemplary youth service
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has recognised its young officers for remarkable contributions.
The recognition comes during this year's Youth Month.
Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said SAPS is proud to introduce young officers to the nation during Youth Month as examples of police members who go above and beyond the call of duty.
She said one of the officers being recognised is 33-year-old Constable Martin van der Westhuizen.
'Van der Westhuizen is a qualified police drone pilot stationed at the Lyttelton police station in Centurion,' she said.
After completing his matric in 2010, Van der Westhuizen pursued his childhood dream of becoming a police officer.
'He applied to join the service on numerous occasions before finally being enlisted in 2018,' she added.
Van Wyk said the young constable, who has over seven years of service, has earned two certificates of commendation from the National Commissioner, awarded in both 2019 and 2021 for exemplary service delivery.
'He gained national attention in July 2023 when a video of him, neatly dressed in uniform at a colleague's funeral in Vosloorus, was shared on TikTok.'
She explained that a community member, who admired Van der Westhuizen's conduct, posted the clip, which quickly went viral and earned him the nickname Crush of the Nation.
'When he's not responding to complaints, detaining suspects or making arrests, Van der Westhuizen plays a key role in crime prevention operations by piloting a drone,' added Van Wyk.
Van der Westhuizen expressed his dedication to his role: 'I don't just wear my police uniform; it's my mission to uphold the values behind it every single day.'

A 42-year-old police sergeant has been detained following the kidnapping of Kamogelo Baukudi (pictured) last Thursday morning. The Free State police have confirmed that a police sergeant has been detained in connection with the disappearance of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi. According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the SAPS had initially reported that people impersonating police had kidnapped the teenager on Thursday, 5 June. Mathe said after further investigation, Free State police uncovered that the white Toyota Hilux GD6 is SAPS property, and a 42-year-old policeman was subsequently arrested. "The SAPS had initially reported that fake cops had kidnapped Kamogelo Baukudi. Upon further investigation a Sergeant has been arrested. This is highly disappointing and unacceptable," Mathe stated.

Police sergeant arrested in connection with kidnapping of Free State school pupil
Free State police have made a breakthrough in the case of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi who was allegedly kidnapped by two men posing as police officers on Thursday. According to the police, a 42-year-old police sergeant has been arrested and detained in Bloemfontein in connection with the kidnapping. He is expected to appear in court soon. Free State police commissioner Lt-Gen Baile Motswenyane said the investigation has now entered a crucial phase. 'The involvement of any SAPS member in criminal acts will not be tolerated. Culprits will be held accountable — even if they are within our own ranks,' said Motswenyane. According to a TimesLIVE report, the complainant, Daniel Malebatso, allegedly arrived at Martie du Plessis Special School in Fichardt Park as usual to fetch Baukudi, a grade 11 pupil at the school. Provincial police spokesperson Lt-Col Thabo Covane said the two left the school premises with Baukudi driving the Suzuki Ertiga. While driving on Vereeniging Drive in Ehrlich Park, Malebatso alleged they heard a siren sound from behind and were pulled over by occupants in a white Toyota Hilux GD-6 double cab. Covane said inside the Toyota Hilux, there were two unknown men, one wearing a police uniform and the other a blue tracksuit. The suspects' bakkie was allegedly fitted with blue lights on the grill and what appeared to be a police radio inside. Covane said the suspect wearing a police uniform told Malebatso the Suzuki Ertiga they were driving was suspected of delivering drugs. The suspects then allegedly separated Baukudi and Malebatso and instructed Malebatso to drive his vehicle in front while they followed to the Park Road police station. 'The two vehicles turned back and drove in a westerly direction on Vereeniging Drive. Malebatso alleged a truck moved in between the two vehicles and he did not see the Hilux again. He said one suspect was speaking Sesotho fluently and mentioned the name 'Thipe'. Cellphones belonging to Baukudi and Malebatso were found under a bridge on Ferreira Road.'

Image: Supplied The SAPS and Police Ministry say they are not aware of the disappearance of Major-General Philani Lushaba, the chief financial officer of the SAPS Crime Intelligence unit, who allegedly vanished as the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was preparing to question him about his involvement in financial misconduct linked to over a multi-million Rand property scandal. The unit allegedly spent more than R45 million on irregular property purchases without proper approvals, triggering an investigation by the Inspector-General of Intelligence (IGI). The DA said Lushaba failed to report for duty on Friday and was unreachable. The party said Lushaba's disappearance followed closely on the conclusion of an investigation by IGI into unlawful property acquisitions by the unit. 'I think you should know where to direct inquiries in the SAPS,' he said. NPA spokesperson, Mthunzi Mhaga, did not respond to a request for comment. On Sunday, DA member of Parliament, Dianne Kohler Barnard, said the party had asked about Lushaba's whereabouts and had heard nothing in response. At the centre of the scandal are two expensive acquisitions - a R22.7m Pretoria boutique hotel and a R22.8m Durban commercial property, allegedly approved by Lushaba and Crime Intelligence head Maj-Gen Dumisani Khumalo without Treasury or Public Works oversight. 'The scale of spending, the lack of transparency, and the irregular process raise serious questions about possible corruption and abuse of public funds,' said Barnard. Barnard said that the DA has submitted urgent parliamentary questions to the Minister of Police to determine the contents of the IGI's report and to establish whether further misconduct has been uncovered. Barnard said the party would also write to the chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence to demand that the SAPS leadership, including Crime Intelligence's top officials, be summoned to account before Parliament. 'The IGI's report must now serve as a turning point. Without urgent action to remove corrupt elements from senior management, there can be no hope of restoring credibility to SAPS' intelligence function - or protecting South Africans from organised crime and criminal capture, said Barnard, adding that law enforcement must treat this matter with the urgency it deserves. Lushaba is not new to controversy. He lost his state firearm and laptop after he was allegedly robbed by a sex worker in 2022. Barnard said the SAPS Crime Intelligence division has a long, troubling record of corruption. 'For too long, this vital unit has been plagued by looting, political interference, and lawlessness." The division has also suffered from repeated leadership instability, internal leaks and operation failures. This was highlighted in a parliamentary committee in March 2025, where issues of persistent political interference and resource mismanagement were raised as weakening the division's ability to combat crime.
