Cannes 2025: From Anupam Kher to Urvashi Rautela, a look at India at Cannes so far

The Hindu16-05-2025

As the French Riviera basks a brand new selection of film's from around the world, the 78th Cannes Film Festival (May 13–24) is already proving to be another big year for Indian representation. No longer an intermittent presence, India has made its mark this year with a mix of films in competition, fashion-forward appearances, and veteran presences that has been speaking volumes of its growing cultural clout on a stage like Cannes.
Filmmaker and Cannes 2024 icon Payal Kapadia, who made history last year by becoming the first Indian to win the Grand Prix for All We Imagine As Light, returns to Cannes this year as a member of the festival's main jury.
Among the key highlights is director Neeraj Ghaywan's Homebound, which is premiering in the Un Certain Regard section, exactly a decade after his debut feature Masaan was screened at Cannes. Backed by Dharma Productions and co-produced by Adar Poonawalla and others, Homebound features Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor in leading roles. The film has drawn international attention, with veteran filmmaker Martin Scorsese joining the project as executive producer.
Some bonds carry us through.

'I have seen Neeraj's first film Masaan in 2015, and I loved it,' Scorsese said in a statement. 'Neeraj has made a beautifully crafted film that's a significant contribution to Indian cinema.' French distribution for Homebound has been secured through Ad Vitam, a company known for handling several award-winning international titles.
Cannes will also seen the return of Satyajit Ray's 1970 classic Aranyer Din Ratri (Days and Nights in the Forest) in a newly restored 4K version. The screening will be attended by Sharmila Tagore, who starred in the original film. The restoration is part of the festival's broader effort to spotlight landmark works from world cinema.
In La Cinef, a section dedicated to film school projects, A Doll Made Up of Clay was selected. The short film, by Ethiopian student Kokob Gebrehaweria Tesfay currently studying in Kolkata, touches on themes of migration and unrealised dreams.
Veteran actor Anupam Kher is in Cannes for the premiere of his new film Tanvi the Great, scheduled for May 17. During his visit, Kher reunited with Robert De Niro, with whom he co-starred in Silver Linings Playbook. De Niro, who received an honorary Palme d'Or this year, was introduced to Shubhangi, the lead actor in Kher's film.
Indian actors and public figures have also made appearances on the red carpet. Urvashi Rautela attended the opening ceremony and the screening of Patir un jour (Leave One Day), wearing a multicoloured strapless gown and carrying a parrot-shaped crystal clutch that drew significant attention on social media.
Sri Lankan actress Jacqueline Fernandez represented Indian cinema under the Red Sea Film Foundation's Women in Cinema initiative. She was one of six global honourees recognised for their work in film. Fernandez expressed her appreciation in a social media post, saying she was 'delighted to be an honouree' and to be part of a platform supporting female storytellers.
First-time attendee Nitanshi Goel, who starred in Lapataa Ladies, made her Cannes debut this year. While her red carpet gown attracted notice, it was her second outfit — a lehenga saree paired with a pearl-embellished hairpiece featuring miniature portraits of Indian cinema legends — that received particular attention for its tribute to the history of Indian film.
Alia Bhatt, who was slated to make her Cannes debut as a L'Oréal ambassador, has postponed her trip. According to sources, the decision was made in light of the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan. Bhatt's team has not ruled out a visit later in the festival, depending on how the situation develops.
Cannes veteran Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, as well as Karan Johar, Janhvi Kapoor, Ishaan Khatter, and Aditi Rao Hydari, are among the many expected to walk the red carpet.

First Indian rock band on America's Got Talent is from Northeast

Growing up in Sikkim's Gangtok on a steady diet of gritty tunes and razor-sharp riffs by pioneering hard rock icons like The Eagles and Guns N' Roses and local rock talent like CRAB and Still Waters, members of the four-piece Girish and The Chronicles never concerned themselves with conforming to India's mainstream music scene — one that is often dominated by film music and represented abroad through Indian classical music. The band, instead, for the last 16 years, doubled down on a sound that was unmistakably rooted in classic Western hard rock and metal. But even for a band which built its identity on a genre far away from typical national temper and trends, they never factored in America's Got Talent: one of the most popular TV shows in the world. Their breakout moment on the show's Season 20 last week: a roaring performance of Adele's 'Set fire to the rain' in the audition round knocked the socks off of the frenzied audience and judges — Simon Cowell, Sofía Vergara, Howie Mandel and Mel B — not expecting an Indian rock band to perform actual hard rock. Just as the band flung itself into the pop song with distorted guitars and Girish's unhinged voice, all four were stunned, followed by an enthusiastic standing ovation and a resounding entry into the next round. 'The whole experience was surreal… it was electrifying… something we'll never forget. Years of touring, dreaming, and staying true to our sound led up to that moment. We're just incredibly grateful to be part of something this big, and to share a piece of our journey with the world,' said frontman Girish Pradhan in an email conversation with The Indian Express. 'You come from the other side of the globe and do something so traditionally American.. It was so beautiful,' said Howie Mandel on the show. On Friday last week, hot on the heels of their now viral performance with 1.7 million views, the Bengaluru-based band — comprising vocalist Girish, guitarist Suraz Sun, bassist Yogesh Pradhan (also Girish's younger brother), and drummer Nagen Nags – with their long tresses cascading behind and goatees that harked back to the 90s, sang a set at the Capital's newly opened The Piano Man. As if plucked straight from the golden age of rock 'n' roll and planted in the cosy live music venue, the band had those present flipping out as frontman Girish's soaring vocals pierced through with the song 'Rock n roll is here to stay'. With limbs pounding, someone from the crowd screamed, 'AGT winners'. Girish obliged by crooning the performance from the show. 'The outpouring of love and support we have received from across the globe has been overwhelming in the best way possible. It's a reaffirmation of everything we've worked so hard for, and a reminder of how far we've come,' said Girish. It all started when a producer from America's Got Talent reached out to Girish via Instagram, after seeing a soundcheck video he had posted from a show at Independence Rock Festival in Mumbai. 'That conversation opened the door for us to pursue AGT, and the rest followed naturally,' says Girish, who identifies the global perception of Indian music, which is traditionally centred around classical genres and Bollywood. 'But as a band, we never set out to fit into that mould. Coming from Sikkim, we were already on the periphery of the mainstream spotlight – and in many ways, that gave us the freedom to chart our own course…We're not trying to redefine what it means to be Indian. We are simply sharing our story,' says Girish. Girish and his younger brother Yogesh are the sons of Bimla Pradhan, a well-known Nepali folk and classical singer, and football commentator Shyam Pradhan, who was deeply passionate about music, and also the band's first manager, mentor and financier. While the brothers grew up with the traditional sound of folk music at home, they were soon drawn to Northeast's deep connection with rock and metal.

Telangana plans to develop Hyderabad as capital of Indian cine industry

The Telangana government plans to develop Hyderabad as the capital of the Indian cinema industry. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who is the chairman of the Ministerial Sub-Committee on film industry development, on Tuesday directed the Information Department Commissioner and Film Development Corporation officials to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to develop Hyderabad as the capital of Indian cinema. A meeting of the Ministerial Sub-Committee on the comprehensive development of the film industry was held on Tuesday. The meeting, attended by Ministers and Sub-Committee members Komatireddy Venkat Reddy and D. Sridhar Babu, discussed multiple key issues. The Deputy CM stated that the government's goal is to develop Hyderabad into a film city that attracts cinema professionals from across India and abroad. He noted that at present, filmmakers in Telangana face significant hurdles in obtaining shooting permissions separately from multiple departments such as the police, fire services, and municipal bodies. The sub-committee decided to resolve this issue. To streamline the process, the Deputy CM instructed officials to establish a single-window system under the Film Development Corporation by appointing a dedicated officer who can coordinate and secure approvals from all required departments swiftly. The Deputy CM also emphasised that allowing film shootings across various tourist locations in the state will boost tourism development. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Thousands Are Saving Money Using This Wall Plug elecTrick - Save upto 80% on Power Bill Click Here Undo Another issue raised was the overpricing of food and other items at cinema theatres' canteens, which is causing inconvenience to the public.
