Gunshot detection system paying dividends for Tupelo police

TUPELO – Instead of worrying about the long arm of the law, Tupelo criminals now have to consider its long ear.
For the last two years, the Tupelo Police Department has been using a system that can not only detect gunshots but can also pinpoint their location. And just how accurate is the FireFly system? Extremely accurate.
Derek Schulte, the FireFly program manager for Tupelo-based Hyperion, said the system is designed to both detect and geolocate gunshots. It will also determine if a noise was, in fact, a gunshot.
Schulte said if the system rates a location with high confidence, you should be able to find spent shells casings within a 15-foot radius.
Police say it is usually more accurate than that.
'After we get a notification, you can go out to the point on the map and look around where you're standing and find shell casings,' said Capt. Doug Mansell, TPD public information officer.
The system Tupelo uses is based on a military version of FireFly that can detect small-arms fire, rocket/mortar fire and unmanned aircraft systems (military drones). The law enforcement version of FireFly utilizes a series of sensors to detect the signature sound of a gunshot and record it.
'(The sound) needs to be heard by a minimum of three sensors to be able to geolocate,' Schulte said. 'Then, it will try to determine if it thinks the sound is gunfire. The whole process only takes five to 10 seconds.'
That allows officers to be dispatched much quicker than if they had to wait on witnesses to call 911.
The system assigns each recording with a confidence level, which helps determine if it was actually gunfire and not an audibly similar sound like a car backfiring. A human ear listens to every recording before officers are dispatched to a location. The loud noise might be a garbage truck dropping a dumpster, or a roofing crew using a nail gun being put to a roof on a nearby house. By listing some sounds as not gunfire, the system can fine-tune its algorithms to improve accuracy.
TPD is using FireFly as another tool to help solve crime. It is used routinely in investigations into shooting incidents within the city limits. That includes the late January arrest of a man who had a Glock pistol which had been converted to fully automatic fire. FireFly recorded the sound of the man firing dozens of rounds and led police to his location in southeast Tupelo.
'I wish we had this when I was an investigator,' said Sgt. Kevin Parker, TPD public information officer. 'You can play it in court and confirm what happened.'
Mansell said FireFly adds another layer of evidence to an investigation. Since it provides a timestamp of when a shooting occurred, it can also be used to eliminate suspects in conjunction with the department's blue light cameras and private surveillance videos.
'If video captures someone on the other side of town at the time the shots were fired, then we can eliminate them and move on with the investigation,' Parker said.
FireFly is actually marketed to the police departments of cities much larger than Tupelo. Phoenix, Arizona, is the biggest customer, with more than 300 sensors. Dallas, Texas, is a new customer and Chicago, Illinois, is considering the system.
The high cost of the FireFly system effectively eliminates Tupelo from the regular customer base. Tupelo benefits from the fact that Hyperion is a hometown company and serves as a test bed.
The setup is a win-win for both the city and the industry. Since Hyperion actually owns all the sensors in Tupelo, they are free to make changes and install upgrades. They can test new setups in real time and real-life situations. And the city benefits from pricey crime fighting tools without putting an extra burden on the taxpayers.
'Colorado Springs, Colorado was our previous test bed, but if there was a problem, it was just too far away,' Schulte said. 'We wanted a test bed location that was close enough that we could try new things. Tupelo let us set up.'

Washington generates more hydroelectricity than any other state, so it is fitting that research to protect the critical infrastructure responsible for generating this power is happening right here in the Tri-Cities, at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Researchers at PNNL are combining their knowledge of the hydropower system and expertise in cybersecurity to secure the operational technology of the nation's hydropower fleet. Their work to protect these facilities helps ensure the continued generation of affordable electricity that powers our homes and factories. It also safeguards a key source of dispatchable power — generation that can be ramped up and down as needed to balance supply and demand — that enhances grid reliability and resilience. The federally managed hydropower projects have an average age of about 65 years, so researchers tasked with protecting them must bridge the past to the future. Efforts to adapt aging systems to thwart today's constantly evolving cyber threats include developing a suite of cybersecurity tools, an operational training model and a monitoring system. To make it easier for operators who may need to respond to and recover from a cyber incident, researchers assembled and integrated guidance from several agencies and created a cyber-physical framework and roadmap for the nation's entire fleet. They also prepared and shared a step-by-step desk guide for navigating a cyberattack. Fundamental to this work was an assessment of the connections and interactions among the cyber and physical components at hydropower facilities of all kinds. By studying a representative sample of plants with a wide range of ages and uses, researchers found that they could be binned into just nine distinct cyber-physical configurations. This allows operators to more easily identify shared risks and potential mitigations. In a separate effort to train cybersecurity professionals working on critical infrastructure, PNNL researchers developed a series of test platforms. These platforms, known as skids, are scaled-down, functional models that enable realistic exercises without putting real infrastructure at risk. Examples of PNNL-developed skids include models of a water treatment facility, the Class 1 freight rail network and a hydropower plant. Each can be 'attacked' by cyber means to explore vulnerabilities and mitigation strategies. The hydropower skid and associated training scenarios were designed with input from regional hydropower plant operators, including Spokane-based Avista Corporation and Grant County Public Utility District. Complete with wicket gates, turbines and other components needed to generate power, as well as small, representative industrial control systems, the skid allows operators to see the effects of unauthorized cyber access and learn how to manage the risk. Trainees can watch water levels above and below the miniature dam as the control systems undergo a simulated cyberattack. They can monitor relays in the substation that might trip, watch for flooding or erosion and see how the power grid responds. They also get a firsthand look at how their simulated responses impact the system. PNNL's support in protecting hydropower plants also extends to an award-winning technology called SerialTap. This palm-sized device serves as a data collector, allowing modern network cybersecurity tools to monitor dispersed serial communication devices and legacy industrial control systems. SerialTap makes it possible to detect cyberattacks and network anomalies so that analysts and operators can respond more quickly and effectively. The technology will be tested by a commercial partner whose affiliate companies own and operate 85 hydroelectric facilities in the United States. As the complexity and connectedness of the critical infrastructure we depend on for a strong economy increase, so does the risk of cyber threats with higher consequences. Experts at PNNL are developing novel approaches to protect, detect and recover from potential cyberattacks at the hydroelectric facilities that produce nearly 6 percent of the nation's total electricity — and more than 60 percent of the power generated in the great state of Washington. A 21-year-old Henry County man has learned his fate after he was convicted of bringing a stolen gun into the labor and delivery unit of a hospital. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Last Wednesday, a judge sentenced Terrell Monquez Searcy, 21, also known as rapper Quez 2RR, to serve 66 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. This was after the 21-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a machine gun in March, from the incident that occurred in August 2023. According to court documents, Searcy was arrested after security at Piedmont Walton Hospital found he had hidden a gun under a couch cushion inside a hospital room in the labor unit on Aug. 17, 2023. Investigators said Searcy handed over the Glock Model 17 9mm handgun with a loaded 30-round extended magazine to the security officers. Police ran the serial number on the firearm and found out it was reported stolen from Walton County, Georgia. Searcy was taken into custody,' investigators said in a news release. ATF agents ended up testing the gun and confirmed that it functioned as a machine gun. During the investigation into Searcy, investigators learned that he had showcased the converted pistol in his music videos posted to his YouTube page. 'In a music video titled 'Traffic,' Searcy rapped, 'I pop out a switch on the back of my Glock' and 'I put a switch on the back of my Glock, just to clean up the street when it's time for that action.' At one point in the video, Searcy's holding a pistol in his waistband with what appears to be a machine gun conversion device attached to the back,' investigators said. Searcy was ultimately indicted on charges of possessing a machine gun in August 2024. During the indictment process, 'agents located Instagram messages between Searcy and a female law enforcement officer with the Clayton County Police Department. Between January and March 2023, Searcy asked the police officer to run his information to see if there were any warrants for his arrest.' During an interview with Clayton County police detectives, the officer admitted to giving Searcy the info, including information about active warrants for his arrest. On Feb. 11, 2025, ATF and several other agencies executed a search warrant on Search's home in McDonough. Searcy was there with two other men. During the search, they found several firearms. ATF agents ran tests on the firearms they collected that they had been used in other crimes in the area, including one that 'was used in a drive-by shooting in DeKalb County where four people, including two juveniles, were shot inside their homes.' 'Each shooting occurred within just days of Searcy receiving information from the Clayton County police officer on the active Clayton County homicide where his friend was shot and killed,' the news release said. 'Holding people found in possession of machine guns and with illegal conversion devices accountable for breaking federal law remains a top priority in the Middle District of Georgia,' said Acting U.S. Attorney C.
