Army Uses Drone Tech In Sikkim Landslide Rescue
Amid a series of massive landslides in Sikkim earlier this month, the Army has now combined cutting-edge tech with human efforts in its rescue operations as a new model of first response to disasters in the Eastern Himalayas, particularly in the remote, high-risk areas.
The first ever display of this new strategy was evident during the landslides in Lachen on June 1, about 123 km from Gangtok, where three soldiers lost their lives and six went missing.
The Army, to support the search in treacherous conditions, deployed Ground Penetration Radar (GPR) drone from a platform called BonV Aero, a deep-tech startup.
The drone soared over the debris, scanning beneath the surface to detect hidden anomalies precisely.
It helped pinpoint two locations - at depths of 0.76 meters and 0.015 meters. Rescue teams dug at the exact spots and confirmed the presence of human remains, cutting down the time in rescue operations.
Unlike thermal cameras or trained dogs, which often falter in unstable terrain or deep burials, this new drone based platform gave rescue teams a safe, real-time view of what lay hidden beneath.
The drone's data fed into a digital map on-site, giving Army engineers not just an aerial view but critical sub-surface intelligence-turning guesswork into guided action.
This model will now be used for future disaster response rescue operations, particularly in Sikkim where massive landslides are very common, Army sources added.

Southern Command unveils first geothermal net zero building in Jhansi
In a step towards building climate-conscious defence infrastructure, the Pune-headquartered Southern Command of the Indian Army on Thursday inaugurated the nation's first geothermal-based net zero energy building at Jhansi. The online inauguration of the infrastructure was done by Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, at Pune, underscoring the Army's leadership in adopting advanced and green technologies. 'This innovative facility, constructed in less than four months, harnesses geothermal energy by exchanging heat with the earth to maintain a naturally balanced internal environment, significantly reducing external energy reliance. The project is a critical step in support of the government's goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2047, with the building estimated to offset over 50 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually,' read a press statement from the Army. 'The building's net zero energy credentials were independently assessed and validated by the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Calicut. The institute confirmed that the structure achieves complete annual energy neutrality through its integration of geothermal and solar systems, efficient design, and intelligent energy management, reinforcing its standing as a pioneering model in sustainable defence infrastructure,' the release added. Equipped with smart lighting and energy-efficient automation, including light and motion sensors and a solar rooftop system, the building is designed for minimal power consumption and sustained operations even in off-grid conditions, officials said. 'The project exemplifies the spirit of the Year of Technology Absorption, showcasing rapid construction, use of alternative materials, and integration of sustainable systems. It also sets a benchmark for future development of green buildings in remote and forward locations, where energy independence and environmental performance are mission critical requirements,' the release stated.

India to boost drone capabilities amid growing threats from China, Pakistan

New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, on Thursday, launched a 'Vendor Registration Application' developed by the Indian Army in collaboration with Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics (BISAG-N). In a post on X, the Additional Directorate General of Public Information, IHQ of MoD (Army) said, 'Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani, #VCOAS today launched a 'Vendor Registration Application' developed by Indian Army in collaboration with #BISAG-N. It offers a secure & digitised solution for Army Purchase Organisation Vendors for their registration process.' 'By Leveraging Blockchain technology, the portal revolutionises the vendor registration process by replacing the traditional time consuming manual procedures involving multiple layers of physical verification, paperworks and follow ups with a fully online automated platform. The application offers a new era of transparency and simplifies ease of doing business with minimal human intervention,' it added. As per a note shared in the X post, the app has been built as an interface between vendors and the Army Purchase Organisation in alignment with the Indian Army's Year of Transformation. 'Welcome to a new era of transparency and efficiency across Army Purchase Organisation. Today, we are proud to introduce the Vendor Registration Application. Developed in collaboration between Directorate General of Supplies and Transport and BISAG-N. In alignment with the Year of Transformation, the application leverages the power of blockchain to revolutionise the interface between vendors and Army Purchase Organisation,' the note by ADGPI read. According to the note, it was emphasised that this innovative platform ensures that every interaction is secure, transparent, immutable and provenance-ready. 'With a user-friendly interface, vendors can easily apply online and track their application status in real time, alongwith the capability to submit redressals and rectify any observations concurrently while obtaining insight into upcoming tenders,' it said. 'No more lengthy paperwork or bureaucratic delays. Alongside simplifying the registration process, the site also emboldens the scrutiny process through API based verifications from Single Sources of Truth across various domains like FSSAI, GST, Global Standards 1, Trademark Auth and ULIP providing accurate and updated information,' the note read. This step was taken to foster a diverse vendor ecosystem and encourage small businesses into the supply chain.
