There's a total lunar eclipse coming. How will these 2 solar-powered moon probes survive the darkness?

When the moon falls into Earth's shadow Thursday night into Friday (March 13-14), observers will be treated to views of a "blood moon" total lunar eclipse. But given that lunar spacecraft are solar-powered, how do they survive when they're cut off from the sun?
For NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which has been orbiting the moon since 2009, it will be time to batten down the hatches.
"LRO's science instruments and some components not needed by the spacecraft will be powered off during the total lunar eclipse," Noah Petro, project scientist for the LRO mission at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, said in an interview with Space.com.
The danger is to LRO's battery. The spacecraft is solar-powered and spends the daylight portion of its roughly two-hour orbit around the moon using its solar arrays to charge its onboard battery, which it then relies on while on the nightside of the moon. However, NASA revealed that by 2018, the efficiency of LRO's battery had already degraded to 70% as a result of continual charging.
During the March 13-14 total lunar eclipse, LRO will be in darkness — either on the moon's nightside or in Earth's umbral shadow — for 5 hours, 48 minutes. That's a relatively long time, but Petro is confident that LRO's battery can keep the spacecraft alive.
"Before entering the eclipse, we will have charged the battery to its maximum capacity," he said. To prevent too great a drain on its power, every scientific instrument on the spacecraft is being shut down. During an eclipse, the temperature inside the spacecraft can drop to 23 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 5 degrees Celsius), but for the spacecraft's wide-angle camera, which is less protected, it can feel as cold as minus 22 F (minus 30 C). So steps will be taken beforehand to make sure everything is as rosy as possible.
"Because being in darkness also cools the satellite, we will heat the instruments and spacecraft prior to the eclipse," Petro said. "This ensures minimal added power draw from heaters during the eclipse while maintaining spacecraft components within normal operating temperatures and the instruments well above survival limits."
The precautions taken for a lunar eclipse haven't always been quite this drastic. During previous eclipses, LRO was able to keep one instrument switched on. Called Diviner, it is a radiometer that detects thermal emissions from the lunar surface to study how the surface warms and cools over the course of a lunar day.
The idea behind keeping it switched on during a lunar eclipse was to study how the lunar surface cools while in Earth's shadow, which provides information about the composition and size distribution of material in the lunar regolith, which is made up of rocks, small particles and dust. The size and composition of the rocks affect how quickly they cool.
"Diviner's measurements during prior eclipses, particularly of targeted regions, allows for insight into the uppermost surface of the moon," Petro said.
During the total lunar eclipse on Oct. 8, 2014, Diviner specifically observed a crater called Kepler and a lunar nighttime "cold spot." In particular, cold spots are areas around some craters where Diviner had found unusually cool nighttime temperatures.
In addition to determining the size distribution of the material ejected from the crater during the impact, Diviner found that the "cold spot" was 18 F (10 C) warmer than the surrounding material. This suggests that the vertical layering of material within the lunar regolith may be more complex than previously thought, to allow it to radiate heat away at a different rate from its surroundings.
LRO isn't the only active lunar mission. Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost, the second private mission to soft-land on the moon, touched down in Mare Crisium on March 2 as part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program.

Blue Ghost is carrying 10 NASA experiments designed to investigate the surface of the moon. Like LRO, it is solar powered. Blue Ghost is designed to last only during the daytime, which is about two weeks on the slowly rotating moon. Indeed, Blue Ghost landed in time to see the sunrise. Once the sun has set, the lander's batteries will power down, its heaters will switch off, and the cold of lunar night will probably kill it by mid-March.
But will Blue Ghost survive that long? Sunset from Blue Ghost's landing site comes on March 16, but the total lunar eclipse is two days before that and will plunge the lander into shadow.
The mission can survive several hours into lunar night on battery power alone. The lunar eclipse will last 6 hours, 3 minutes overall, but only 65 minutes of that will be in totality, under what's called the dark umbral shadow. The rest of the eclipse will take place in the penumbral shadow, where some sunlight does reach the surface.
Indeed, the Firefly Aerospace team is so confident that Blue Ghost will survive the eclipse that they intend to take high-resolution images of the event from the lunar surface while the lander is in Earth's shadow. In other words, on the moon, Blue Ghost will see a total solar eclipse!
So, as you look up at the moon while Earth's shadow moves over it on the night of March 13-14, spare a thought for those lonely, vulnerable space probes that must battle through the darkness to survive.

Isaacman's nomination had already advanced through the Senate Commerce Committee in a 19-9 vote and was expected to hit the full floor this week. When reached for comment Wednesday, he told The Hill he is 'grateful' for the support from the space community. The White House also did not offer specifics, stirring further frustration. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt briefly addressed the decision in a briefing Tuesday, telling reporters Trump 'wants to ensure all of his nominees are aligned fully with the America first mission of this administration.' 'I was frankly gobsmacked,' Mark Whittington, an author who studies space, politics and policy, told The Hill. 'Jared Isaacman is well regarded by just about everybody.' While Isaacman — a billionaire entrepreneur and commercial astronaut — was not originally considered a contender for the role, observers said the aerospace community was largely open to his new perspective at the agency. 'People who follow the space program think he would be perfect for NASA administrator, and I can see no reason why this is happening,' Whittington said. Rumors quickly circulated over the weekend that the decision might have something to do with Isaacman's ally, Elon Musk, who stepped down from his role leading Trump's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last week. Two sources close to the White House suggested Isaacman's ties to Musk may have also contributed to his removal as the pick to lead NASA. Musk, the sources said, rubbed many people in the administration the wrong way. And with his official departure from government, Isaacman lost a strong ally in the White House. Isaacman worked alongside Musk at SpaceX to fund the company's first private spacewalk, and he was one of four astronauts aboard the Polaris Dawn flight last year. 'Now, six months of hard work later, just days short of a confirmation vote, and it's all thrown away because he bought two flights to space from Elon Musk? Are you f—ing kidding me?' said one Republican space policy expert. 'It looks like the Waste, Fraud and Abuse Caucus was bigger than we thought.' Isaacman acknowledged the timing of the decision this week, telling the 'All In' podcast he received a phone call Friday informing him the president decided to 'go in a different direction.' Friday marked Musk's last day as a special government employee leading DOGE for the White House. 'It was a real bummer,' Isaacman said. 'It was certainly disappointing. But the president needs to have his person that he counts on to fulfill the agenda.' 'I'm not … [playing] dumb on this. I had a pretty good idea,' he added. 'I don't think the timing was much of a coincidence that there were other changes going on the same day, and it was obviously a little bit of a disappointment.' Pressed on whether he was referring to Musk, Isaacman said, 'Obviously there was more than one departure that was covered on that day.' 'There were some people that had some axes to grind, I guess, and I was a good visible target,' he continued. 'I just want to be overwhelmingly clear — I don't fault the president at all.' 'I don't blame an influential adviser coming in and saying, 'Look, here's the facts, and I think we should kill this guy and the president's got to make a call and move on,'' he said. 'I think that's exactly kind of how it went.' Isaacman sidestepped questions over whether his nomination withdrawal was a 'shot at Elon,' telling the 'All In' podcast that people 'can draw their own conclusions, but I think the direction people are thinking on this seems to check out to me.' Isaacman has given to Democrats during recent campaign cycles, including Sen. Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), a retired astronaut. But he has also donated to a few Republicans. A White House official pointed The Hill to Isaacman's donations in recent years to PACs linked to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), along with the hundreds of thousands of dollars he donated to other Democratic campaigns since 2010. But various space observers emphasized that reports of these donations first circulated in January. Six months later, they are frustrated the donations are abruptly being used against the tech entrepreneur. 'It was well known that, like a lot of businessmen, he [Isaacman] donated to both parties and that came up in the vetting process. … I'm sure that Trump knows about it, or he should have known about,' Whittington told The Hill. 'All of a sudden, six months later, he says, 'I'm shocked, shocked, that Jared Isaacman gave money to Democrats,'' he added. Isaacman echoed this, stating his donations were 'not a new development.' He described himself as a moderate who is 'right-leaning' and supportive of Trump's agenda. The space industry now anxiously awaits a new nominee; no name has emerged as a clear front-runner. The need to pass the 'Trump loyalty test' could eliminate several good candidates, the first space policy executive suggested. 'I know you got to have partisan people in a lot of these agencies, but for space, the community is generally bipartisan and more scientific or technical,' they told The Hill. The process to push a new nominee through the Senate could take months, stoking alarm among observers over the steep potential NASA budget cuts. Under Trump's proposed 2026 budget, NASA's funding would be cut by nearly 25 percent in what would be the largest single-year cut at the agency. Musk expressed concerns over proposed funding cuts to NASA in April but said he could not participate in those conversations, as SpaceX is a major federal contractor. Space observers are concerned the cuts will pass through Congress with little opposition. 'When the budget needs to be mulled over and chewed over by Congress, they really need somebody at NASA to explain things to them,' Whittington explained. 'Otherwise, Congress is just going to do what it wants, and I think [it] really goes against the White House's interest if they want to control space policy. This is a major blunder, whatever way you look at it.' A spokesperson for NASA said the agency will 'continue to relentlessly pursue' Trump's 'America First' agenda under acting NASA Administrator Janet Petro. 'The @NASA workforce is committed to serve and eagerly awaits President Trump's new nominee to head the agency, leading us toward our 'manifest destiny in the stars,'' NASA spokesperson Bethany Stevens wrote on the social platform X. It comes amid an already tumultuous time at NASA as it faces workforce and infrastructure challenges as a result of both DOGE cuts and years-long budget declines. 'NASA lost its mojo, they don't know how to solve complex, interdisciplinary problems efficiently, they don't know how to put together the right teams to solve those problems, they lost the ability to do that,' said Charles Camarda, a retired NASA astronaut. Camarda, who recently released a book on NASA's culture challenges, explained NASA has lost its 'research culture' over the years as funding continues to be cut for applied research. 'Right now, we are technically drained. We don't have the expertise, and we're not raising new researchers and engineering researchers,' he said. Brett Samuels contributed reporting. Scientists have finally gathered direct proof of how the universe forges its heaviest elements, a process that has remained a mystery for over half a century. A team from the Flatiron Institute in New York City calculated that giant flares emitted by magnetars — highly magnetic types of collapsed stars known as neutron stars — could be the long-sought cosmic forge that creates the universe's heavy elements. Just one of these giant flares could produce a planet's worth of gold, platinum, and uranium. "It's pretty incredible to think that some of the heavy elements all around us, like the precious metals in our phones and computers, are produced in these crazy extreme environments," Anirudh Patel, a doctoral candidate at Columbia University and lead author on a study of these elements, said in a statement. "Magnetar giant flares could be the solution to a problem we've had where there are more heavy elements seen in young galaxies than could be created from neutron star collisions alone." Lighter elements such as hydrogen, helium, and lithium were forged in the Big Bang, while heavier ones were formed through nuclear fusion in stellar cores during stars' lives — or in the aftermath of their explosive deaths. But just how neutron-rich elements that are heavier than iron are made has remained an open question. These elements are thought to form through a series of nuclear reactions known as the rapid neutron capture process, or r-process, which was long theorized to occur only under extreme conditions such as those in supernovas or neutron star mergers. In 2017, astronomers confirmed the r-process for the first time during the observed merger of two neutron stars. However, such collisions are so rare that they cannot fully account for the abundance of heavy elements in the universe and neutron star mergers happen too late in the universe's history to explain the earliest gold and other heavy elements. But the extreme neutron star flares that can forge these elements are much older. "The interesting thing about these giant flares is that they can occur really early in galactic history," Patel added. To study these processes, the NYC scientists turned to magnetars, whose magnetic fields are trillions of times stronger than Earth's. These stars occasionally produce "flares" — bursts of energy caused by the sudden release of magnetic energy, typically triggered by the rearrangement or decay of their magnetic fields. The team calculated that a magnetar's giant flare could create the right conditions for r-process elements to form, producing highly unstable radioactive nuclei that decay into stable heavy elements such as gold. Excitingly, the NYC team was able to link their calculations to a mysterious observation made in 2004 of a bright flash of light from the magnetar SGR 1806–20. Initially, the event didn't seem unusual — until researchers realized the flare's total energy was roughly a thousand times greater than that of typical bursts. "The event had kind of been forgotten over the years," said Brian Metzger, a senior research scientist at the CCA and a professor at Columbia University. "But we very quickly realized that our model was a perfect fit for it." "I wasn't thinking about anything else for the next week or two," Patel said in a NASA statement. "It was the only thing on my mind." By combining observations of SGR 1806–20's 2004 flare with their model, Metzger, Patel, and their colleagues estimated that the event likely produced around 2 million billion billion (you read that right) kilograms of heavy elements — roughly the mass of Mars or 27 moons! While such flares could account for about 10% of all heavy elements in our galaxy, the researchers note that the origins of the remaining 90% remain uncertain. "We can't exclude that there could be third or fourth sites out there that we just haven't seen yet," Metzger said. "It's a pretty fundamental question in terms of the origin of complex matter in the universe," Patel said. "It's a fun puzzle that hasn't actually been solved." The team's research was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Update: NASA and SpaceX are now planning for the Dragon to undock at 12:05 p.m. ET Friday, May 23. The vehicle would then land at 1:45 a.m. ET Sunday, May 25 off the coast of California. A SpaceX vehicle that has spent about a month docked at the International Space Station on a resupply mission is due to depart within a matter of hours. NASA will provide live coverage as the uncrewed spacecraft begins its return voyage Thursday, May 22. The Dragon capsule, developed by Elon Musk's commercial spaceflight company to deliver cargo and crews to the orbital outpost, will then embark on a long voyage ending with a splashdown landing Friday, May 23, off the coast of California. The vehicle arrived in April with plenty of food, equipment and other supplies for the seven astronauts currently living aboard the station. And it's not leaving emptyhanded: When it undocks, it will be loaded up with scientific research samples and hardware bound for Earth. Here's what to know about the resupply mission and how to watch the U.S. space agency's coverage of the Dragon's departure: For 25 years, the International Space Station has been stationed in low-Earth orbit, typically about 250 miles high, where it has been home to astronauts from all over the world. The orbital laboratory is operated through a global partnership of space agencies, including NASA, Roscosmos, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). More than 280 spacefarers from 23 countries have visited the International Space Station, including 169 from the United States alone, according to NASA. Bigger than a six-bedroom house, the outpost has six sleeping quarters, two bathrooms, a gym and a 360-degree view bay window. As of now, seven members of Expedition 73, including three Americans, are living aboard the ISS – conducting scientific research and working to maintain the station. The crew members aboard the station spent time Wednesday, May 21, loading and securing a variety of cargo inside the Dragon spacecraft ahead of its scheduled departure. The Dragon has spent 30 days docked to the Harmony module, a port and passageway onto the station facing away from Earth, after arriving April 22 with nearly 6,700 pounds of supplies. The spacecraft launched April 21 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida, for SpaceX's 32nd commercial resupply services mission. Standing nearly 27 feet tall and about 13 feet wide, the Dragon is one of four cargo spacecraft that deliver science experiments and other cargo to the space station on a regular basis. Dragon capsules can also carry up to seven astronauts into orbit, though most of SpaceX's Crew missions, which are contracted with NASA, feature a contingent of four. The Dragon is due to undock at about 12:05 p.m. ET Thursday, May 22, from the Harmony module before firing its thrusters to move away from the station. The departure will be under command by SpaceX's Mission Control in Hawthorne, California. NASA will provide live coverage of the undocking beginning at 11:45 a.m. ET Thursday on its streaming service, NASA+. After re-entering Earth's atmosphere, the spacecraft will splash down on Friday, May 23, off the coast of California.
