Aotearoa New Zealand Stands In Solidarity: Keffiyeh Day, May 11, 2025 Announced
Communities across Aotearoa New Zealand are coming together to mark Keffiyeh Day on May 11, 2025 — a day of solidarity, cultural pride, and resistance in support of the Palestinian people.
On this day, people from all walks of life are encouraged to wear the iconic Palestinian keffiyeh (scarf) — a symbol of resilience, identity, and resistance — to raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights in Palestine.
Keffiyeh Day is more than a cultural celebration; it is a powerful statement of unity. In workplaces, schools, universities, and public spaces, New Zealanders will proudly don the keffiyeh to amplify Palestinian voices and stand against oppression and injustice.
'The keffiyeh has become a global emblem of solidarity. In wearing it, we honour Palestinian heritage and reaffirm our collective commitment to justice, freedom, and dignity for all,' said Maher Nazzal, chair of the Palestine Forum of New Zealand.

Government Rightfully Sued Over Illegal Climate ‘Plan'
Last week, world-leading climate scientists called out the Government's approach to agricultural emissions. This week, climate lawyers have sued the Government because its Emissions Reductions Plans do not add up. 'Luxon's Government has chosen to pour oil, coal and gas on the climate crisis fire. Their climate 'plan' is not worth the paper it is written on. That's why they're being sued today,' says the Green Party's co-leader and spokesperson for climate change, Chlöe Swarbrick. 'I called it a demonstrable lie when the Prime Minister told Parliament in December 2023 that he wasn't weakening actions on climate - while he was actively weakening actions on climate. It was and remains a demonstrable lie. This is the first leg of the legal case. 'The Luxon Government's second Emissions Reduction Plan relies on unproven, economically unfeasible technologies and plastering our country in pine trees. This is the second leg of the legal case. 'Christopher Luxon has spent the better part of two years telling the country everything is fine while he dismantles effective climate policy, gives handouts to the fossil fuel sector and platforms lobbyist's pseudoscience on agricultural emissions. This would be a meme - a joke - if it wasn't so serious. 'The Greens have shown we can reduce climate-changing emissions five times faster than the Government's 'plan,' while reducing the cost of living and improving our quality of life. 'New Zealanders deserve so much better than this Government taking them for chumps,' says Chlöe Swarbrick.

Five Years Of Keep It Real Online
Press Release – New Zealand Government As much of the internet sits outside of New Zealands jurisdiction, its important that we equip New Zealanders with the skills and knowledge to navigate the digital world and take steps to protect their own wellbeing. Minister of Internal Affairs Minister of Internal Affairs Brooke van Velden is celebrating the fifth anniversary of Keep It Real Online, a website that helps New Zealand families navigate the digital world safely. 'I know many parents are worried about the type of content their children might come across online and are looking for practical ways to protect them. The Keep It Real Online website offers helpful guidance on how to start those important conversations with your kids, along with information on practical tools like parental controls and safety filters available through search engines and social media platforms,' says Ms van Velden. The website launched in 2020, with a campaign that went viral and attracted international attention for a campaign episode that featured fake porn stars visiting a suburban mother to inform her that her teenage son was watching porn online, and encouraging her to talk to him about how consent and relationships work in the real world. Since the launch five years ago, the website has been viewed over 1.1 million times. The most visited pages for youth focus on misinformation, pornography, and sending and receiving nude images, which highlights the real issues that young people are facing in today's digital environment. It has sections for parents, young people, and teachers, and has information available Chinese, Hindi, and Samoan as well as English and Māori. 'It is great to see so many young people and their families accessing the site Keep It Real Online to learn how to manage any potential online harms. As much of the internet sits outside of New Zealand's jurisdiction, it's important that we equip New Zealanders with the skills and knowledge to navigate the digital world and take steps to protect their own wellbeing.' 'I'm really proud of the digital safety work that the Department has delivered in recent years and just as proud that we're continuing to update the content to stay fresh, relevant, and in tune with the challenges people are facing online today.'
