Congress leaders donated in lakhs to Rahul, Sonia Gandhi-led company on request: ED

India Today23-05-2025

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday alleged that senior Congress leaders were directed to donate large sums to Young Indian Limited, a company controlled by Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi and linked to the National Herald case. The agency claimed that several senior leaders across several states contributed lakhs of rupees to the company, which is now under investigation for what it described as a well-orchestrated financial cover-up. advertisementIn its chargesheet, the agency further claimed that Rahul and Sonia Gandhi were beneficiaries of the funds transferred to Young Indian under the guise of donations.According to the ED, Young Indian Limited allegedly acquired assets worth Rs 2,000 crore from Associated Journals Ltd, the publisher of the *National Herald* newspaper, for just Rs 50 lakh. The transaction has prompted allegations of misappropriation and money laundering.TELANGANA DONATIONS UNDER SCANNER
A significant portion of these questionable transactions has been traced back to Telangana. Acting on the alleged instructions of then-MLA and current Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, four Congress leaders donated over Rs 80 lakh to Young Indian in 2022.Among them, Gali Anil Kumar, who contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, reportedly donated Rs 20 lakh in June 2022. Former MLA Ali Shabbir also contributed Rs 20 lakh, while then Telangana Congress Treasurer P Sudarshan donated Rs 15 lakh. The largest amount, Rs 25 lakh, came from the then Working President of the Telangana Congress. All donations were made within the span of a single month.KARNATAKA, PUNJAB LEADERS ALSO NAMEDadvertisementThe ED's investigation also points to similar donation patterns in Karnataka and Punjab. According to sources, veteran Congress leader Pawan Bansal allegedly instructed Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar and his brother, MP DK Suresh, to contribute Rs 25 lakh each in April 2022. In the same month, a trust linked to Shivakumar, the National Education Trust, donated a staggering Rs 2 crore to Young Indian. In Punjab, Amit Vij, who contested the Assembly elections, donated Rs 3.30 crore in three separate tranches in 2015.The ED suspects these donations were not voluntary contributions but were instead routed as part of a deliberate scheme to funnel money into Young Indian. Sources indicate that the agency is now looking into whether these transactions violated provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).'The pattern, timing, and coordination of these donations suggest a systematic effort to inject funds into Young Indian using party loyalists and state-level leaders,' a senior ED official told India Today. The agency is expected to summon several of the individuals involved for questioning in the coming weeks, even as it prepares to file supplementary evidence in court. The Congress party has so far maintained that the case is politically motivated and that all financial transactions were lawful. However, with the probe deepening and new names surfacing, the National Herald case appears poised to become a major political flashpoint once again. The ED has named Sonia Gandhi as Accused No. 1 and Rahul Gandhi as Accused No. 2, along with five others, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).Tune InTrending Reel

Ordinance on school fees favours private schools, claims AAP

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday alleged that BJP-led Delhi govt's ordinance on regulating fee hikes favours private schools and decried it as an attempt to "fool" parents. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now There was no immediate reaction from the ruling BJP to the allegations. On Tuesday, Delhi Cabinet approved an ordinance empowering the govt to impose fines up to Rs 10 lakh on private schools for violating fee norms and even revoke their right to propose fee revisions. Education minister Ashish Sood said the cabinet, chaired by chief minister Rekha Gupta, approved the Delhi School Education (Transparency in Fixation and Regulation of Fees) Ordinance, 2025, which will be sent for presidential assent through the lieutenant governor. AAP Delhi state president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged that in order to favour private schools, govt brought the ordinance through the backdoor. Calling it an "open" and "blatant" surrender of governance, he said the law is drafted entirely in favour of school management. "Ever since the BJP formed a govt in Delhi, the first session of private schools began with a wave of fee hikes. Parents were left with no choice but to pay," he said. Previously, schools had to seek approval from the Directorate of Education before raising fees. Bharadwaj said, "From April 1, private schools increased fees arbitrarily without approval, and the govt took no action—no rollback or refunds were ordered." Criticising the govt for bypassing public consultation and not bringing the bill before the legislative assembly, he said, "The draft was not made public, was not uploaded online, and no citizen feedback was sought." Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Bharadwaj explained the ordinance hands fee-fixing power to school-level committees, whose decisions will be final without govt oversight. These committees include five school members—three teachers, one principal, and one management member—and parents chosen by lottery. He warned the lottery might select uninterested or uninformed parents, giving schools a voting majority.

The SOG, established within Odisha Police in 2004, specialises in counter-terrorism and extremist operations. "The govt has sanctioned about Rs 150 crore to strengthen the coastal security wing. At least 350 retired navy personnel have been engaged for coastal security. Months after govt slashed grant, organisation under rural ministry flags unpaid medical claims, delayed salaries

Facing non-payment of medical claims and salary delays following the Centre's move to slash its grant, the employees' body of the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) has urged Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to intervene. The NIRDPR is the apex institute for training and research in rural development and functions as a think tank for the Rural Development Ministry. Representatives of the NIRDPR employees' body and academic association met Chouhan during his visit to Hyderabad on Monday. Some BJP leaders including V Sreedhar Reddy, General Secretary of Telangana's Ranga Reddy district, accompanied the representatives. Reddy told The Indian Express that they submitted a letter to the minister that highlights the issues faced by the employees after the grant-in-aid to the NIRDPR from the financial year 2025-26 was stopped. The letter mentions four issues: non-payment and delay in payment of salaries to the employees and Self Help Group (SHG) workers; 'forcing' employees to give an undertaking that they are taking salaries as loan which will have to be repaid; non-payment of medical claims, children education allowance, LTC claims, among others; and 'non-transparent' and 'unaccountable' functioning of the Director General and no dialogue by the DG with employees regarding service conditions post 'disengagement'. Disengagement means the discontinuation of grant-in aid. The Centre has slashed the NIRDPR budgetary allocation to just Rs 1 lakh for financial year 2025-26 from Rs 73.68 crore in revised estimates of the 2024-25 financial year and Rs 75.69 crore in 2023-24. In its letter, the NIRDPR Academic Association has urged the minister to take action. The letter has also urged the minister to nominate two Ministry of Rural Development officers as Deputy Director General in-charge and Registrar in-charge at the NIRDPR. NIRDPR focuses on training, capacity building, research and policy advocacy, and runs academic programs in regular and distance modes. The courses include Diploma in Rural Development Management and Tribal Development Management.
