Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters, 'Vladimir Putin condemned Israel's military operation against Iran and expressed serious concern about a possible escalation of the conflict, which would have unpredictable consequences for the entire situation in West Asia,'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Ushakov noted that President Trump also viewed the situation in the region as 'very alarming.' Despite the tensions, both leaders agreed that the possibility of resuming negotiations over Iran's nuclear programme should not be ruled out. On the issue of Ukraine, Putin conveyed to Trump that Moscow remains open to continuing talks with Kyiv after June 22, according to Russia's RIA news agency. Trump, for his part, reaffirmed his desire for a swift resolution to the conflict, Ushakov added. Putin also congratulated Trump on his 79th birthday. Meanwhile, Israel on Saturday threatened to strike 'every target of the ayatollah regime' in Iran, whose president warned of a severe response if the Israeli attacks continue, fuelling fears of an escalating conflict. The threats came as the two longtime foes exchanged fire a day after Israel unleashed an unprecedented aerial bombing campaign, which scuppered plans for a new round of Iran-US nuclear talks Sunday. The Israeli strikes since Friday hit military and nuclear sites in Iran, and according to officials killed dozens, including top army and Revolutionary Guards commanders as well as civilians. Iran responded with barrages of drones and missiles fired at Israel overnight. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that 'the continuation of the Zionist aggression will be met with a more severe and powerful response from the Iranian armed forces.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD According to a statement from his office, Pezeshkian condemned Washington's 'dishonesty' for supporting Israel while the United States was engaged in nuclear talks with Iran – which mediator Oman said would no longer take place on Sunday, when a sixth round had been scheduled. Putin, Trump discuss West Asia, Ukraine talks on phone call, says Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump held a 50-minute phone call Saturday to discuss the escalating situation in the Middle East and Ukraine peace talks, Putin foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said. During the conversation, Putin briefed Trump on his recent talks with the leaders of Iran and Israel and reiterated Russia's proposal to seek mutually acceptable solutions on the Iranian nuclear issue. The dangerous escalation of the situation in the Middle East was naturally at the centre of the exchange of opinions, Ushakov told journalists following the conversation between Putin and Trump. Vladimir Putin, having condemned the military operation against Iran, expressed serious concern about the possible escalation of the conflict, he said, warning of unpredictable consequences for the entire situation in the Middle East. Putin also emphasised Russia's readiness to carry out possible mediation efforts, and noted that Russia had proposed steps aimed at finding mutually acceptable agreements during US-Iran negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme. Russia's principled approach and interest in the settlement remain unchanged, Ushakov said. Trump described the regional situation as very alarming, Ushakov said, but acknowledged the effectiveness of Israel's strikes on targets in Iran. The leaders did not rule out a possible return to negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme, according to Ushakov. According to Ushakov, Putin told Trump about the implementation of the agreements during peace talks in Istanbul between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, including the exchange of prisoners of war. Our president noted that an exchange of prisoners of war is taking place, including seriously wounded and prisoners of war under 25 years of age, Ushakov said, along with expressing readiness to continue negotiations with the Ukrainians. Trump, he said, noted his interest in a speedy end to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. Putin also congratulated Trump on his 79th birthday.
