Coating satellites in ‘darkness' could help reduce light pollution

Earth's satellite problem is only getting worse as time goes on and more satellites are sent into orbit. One of the chief issues with the number of satellites in orbit is how much they can affect our studies of the stars due to light pollution. However, astronomers may have come up with an ingenuous plan to paint satellites in literal darkness to help hide them from telescopes.
The 'darkness' in question is an ultra-black paint called Vantablack 310. It's one of the darkest paints ever created, and it could help keep satellites from reflecting light back down toward Earth. Right now, when a satellite streaks across a telescope's view, it leaves behind a train that completely mar images.

Additionally, Starlink satellites sit so low in orbit that they are often much brighter than the stars astronomers are trying to study. However, Vantablack 310 could help cut down on that brightness by limiting how much light the satellites reflect to just 2%. That's a huge improvement that would virtually remove satellite streaks from telescope images.
Considering we'll see the launch of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory later this year, finding a way to cut down on light pollution from satellites remains a key goal for astronomers. The problem with just coating satellites in typical Vantablack paint, though, is that it absorbs 99% of the light that hits it. This would quickly overheat the satellites painted with it, leading to other issues.
That's not the case with Vantablack 310, though, which is being designed in conjunction with astronomers. The team says that it needed something that could be handled by engineers, and that's the goal with this new variation of the ultra-black paint.
The company behind the new paint says that it should make satellites invisible to the naked eye. Whether or not we actually see the paint picked up by satellite makers is another issue altogether. SpaceX has experimented with similar options in the past, but they always suffered from the aforementioned overheating issues.
Hopefully the idea of painting satellites in what equates to literal darkness will be enticing to satellite manufacturers, especially if we hope to keep exploring space and learning more about our universe's mysteries.

Those delicious darlings on every brunch menu may be more than just a creamy topping. It turns out this popular green fruit — yes, it's a fruit — may just be the key to restful slumber, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Heart Association. Researchers tracked 969 adults aged 25 and over who had abdominal obesity, which is characterized as a waistline that is 35 inches or more for women and 40 inches or more for men. For 26 weeks, half of the group ate one large Hass avocado per day while the other half continued their usual diet, which typically involved consuming less than two avocados per month. As expected, the avocado-eating group saw marked improvements in their blood lipids — fatty substances like triglycerides and cholesterol — and overall diet. But what caught researchers off guard was the fact that this trendy toast-topper also led to better sleep. The researchers noted that avocado's impact on sleep may be due to its powerhouse blend of nutrients, as it's 'rich in monounsaturated fatty acids, dietary fiber, potassium, folate, vitamin K, copper and pantothenic acid.' It also came as a surprise that avocado consumption was not associated with improved cardiovascular health, which was actually the original purpose of the study. The researchers noted that avocados could benefit slumber as part of a balanced, healthy diet and should not be treated as a solitary sleep aid. 'Sleep is emerging as a key lifestyle factor in heart health, and this study invites us to consider how nutrition — and foods like avocado — can play a role in improving it,' said Dr. Kristina Petersen, study author and associate professor of nutritional sciences at Penn State University. Other factors that can improve your sleep include cutting down on caffeine, curbing alcohol intake, kicking a smoking habit, exercising and limiting screen time before bed. This isn't the first time the versatile superfood has made headlines for unexpected benefits. Previous research suggests avocados may reduce 'bad' cholesterol and help with belly fat in women, thanks to their healthy fats and high fiber content. A 2024 study suggests that eating a small amount of avocado every day may lower a woman's risk for Type 2 diabetes. Just make sure not to overdo it. The Real Reason Why Mental Health Improves After Weight-Loss Surgery
A new study published in the journal Health Psychology has determined the precise reason one's mental health improves following weight-loss surgery. Lead researcher Larissa McGarrity, a clinical psychologist at University of Utah Health who studies mental health after weight-loss surgery, found that getting rid of the stigma surrounding excess weight, rather than the weight loss itself, is the reason many people feel an improvement in their mental health and a decrease in disordered eating following surgery. Conversely, those who underwent weight loss surgery but still continued to face weight-related stigma were at a higher risk for depression, anxiety, and disordered eating. Of the 148 patients surveyed, all underwent bariatric surgery. Data was collected before the surgery, as well as 18–36 months afterward. Over 90 percent of the patients reported experiencing weight-related stigma prior to the procedure, while about 60 percent experienced less stigma after the surgery. Those who experienced less stigma saw an improvement in their mental health and physical wellbeing. However, the 40 percent who continued to experience stigma were found to be at higher risk for depression, disordered eating, and weight increases."There's considerable evidence that societal weight stigma is prevalent and has harmful health consequences for people with obesity," Rebecca Puhl, deputy director for the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Health at the University of Connecticut, told Live Science. "This new study begins to address this research gap.' (Puhl was not involved in this study.) McGarrity emphasized that the study cannot directly establish cause and effect because the patient's experiences were self-reported. However, the results of this study suggest that "bariatric surgery patients are not immune to the effects of weight stigma, even years after surgery, even after significant amounts of weight loss.' Both Puhl and McGarrity agree that more research is needed in order to understand how weight-related stigma can affect overall patient health and treatment.
