Week of May 19 Cable News Ratings: Memorial Day Eats Into Cable News Viewership

Yahoo4 days ago

This is TVNewser's basic cable network ranker and cable news report for the week of May 19, 2025.
All three cable news networks experienced week-to-week declines in total viewers and the advertiser-coveted demo of Adults 25-54 during primetime. Interestingly, all three networks also suffered double-digit drops in the primetime demo.
CNN, however, was the only network to record a gain in either of the measured categories, as it saw an uptick in total viewers during total day.
Of note: these lower numbers occurred during the week leading up to the Memorial Day holiday, suggesting that people spent less time in front of the TV screens.
NETWORKS:
According to Nielsen Live Plus, same-day data for the week of May 19 saw FNC average 2.423 million total viewers and 252,000 A25-54 viewers during primetime. The network was down a respective -3% and -11% in those measured categories relative to the week prior.
During total day, FNC averaged 1.562 million total viewers and 175,000 A25-54 viewers for week-to-week dips of -2% and -5%, respectively.
Fox News remained second in total viewers and third in the demo during primetime among all basic cable networks. In total day, it remained in first position in total viewers and held steady at No. 3 in the demo.
MSNBC's primetime lineup averaged 789,000 total viewers and 60,000 A25-54 viewers for week-to-week declines of -3% and -10%, respectively.
During total day, MSNBC averaged 525,000 total viewers and 45,000 demo viewers for dips of -1% in the former category and -4% in the latter.
Among all basic cable networks, MSNBC remained fourth in total primetime viewers and dropped from No. 22 to No. 27 in the demo. During total day, it slipped to fourth place in total viewers and dropped from 14th to 18th in the demo, tied with the Discovery Channel.
CNN averaged 386,000 total viewers and 66,000 A25-54 viewers in the demo during primetime for respective declines of -5% and -11% compared to the previous week.
In total day, the network had 345,000 total viewers and 56,000 A25-54 viewers in the demo. That translates to a +1% gain in the former category-again, the only network with any positive momentum-and a dip of -3% in the demo.
In relation to all the cable networks, CNN fell from 12th to 14th place in total viewers and dropped from No. 20 to No. 22 in the demo. During total day, it remained in fifth place in total viewers and fell from No. 9 to No. 12 in the demo.
When looking at these networks' performance during the same period a year ago (the week of May 20):
During primetime, Fox News grew +21% in total viewers and +18% in the demo. During total day, the network saw gains of +19% in total viewers and +15% in the demo.
MSNBC dropped by -28% in total viewers and -42% in the demo. During total day, the network was down -31% in total viewers and -41% in the demo.
In primetime, CNN decreased by -20% in total viewers and -27% in the demo. During total day, it dropped -19% in total viewers and -24% in the demo.
PROGRAMMING:
Fox News held 14 out of the Top 15 spots of the most-watched cable news shows of the week in total viewers, with The Five (3.877 million viewers at 5 p.m. ET) leading the way. MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show (1.949 million viewers at 9 p.m. ET on Monday) was in the No. 11 position.
Jesse Watters Primetime (370,000 viewers at 8 p.m. ET) landed in the top spot on the A25-54 chart. Once again, Fox News occupied 14 out of the Top 15 top spots, with The Rachel Maddow Show (132,000 viewers) occupying No. 15.

Rep. Jerry Nadler wants House probe after DHS handcuffs aide in N.Y. office

June 2 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler said Monday he wants a congressional investigation after a Department of Homeland Security officer handcuffed a staff member at the Democrat's office in New York in the same building as immigration court. Nadler told CNN he will send House Judiciary Committee chair Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, a letter requesting an investigation and hearing into the matter, including testimony from HHS Secretary Kristi Noem. Nadler is a former chairman of that committee. On Wednesday, activists were protesting outside the Varick Immigration Court on a different floor of Nadler's office in opposition to the detention of migrants by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Nadler posted Sunday on X that President Donald Trump and DHS "are sowing chaos in our communities, using intimidation tactics against both citizens and non-citizens in a reckless and dangerous manner. In the most recent and deeply troubling incident, DHS agents forcefully entered my Congressional office and handcuffed a member of my staff." He noted no arrests were made and "the situation was quickly de-escalated." But he added: "The decision to enter a Congressional office and detain a staff member demonstrated a deeply troubling disregard for proper legal boundaries. If this can happen in a Member of Congress's office, it can happen to anyone -- and it is happening." Nadler told CNN that DHS officers accused the staff members of "harboring rioters. Video taken by a person inside Nadler's office, and obtained by Gothamist, shows an aide being handcuffed by an agent with the Federal Protective Service while another agent tries to access an area inside the office. A second staffer stands in front of the agent and asks if he has a warrant. "You're harboring rioters in the office," the federal agent told her. The handcuffed aide is heard crying while someone tries to comfort her. DHS was "upset that some of my staff members were watching them grab immigrants emerging from an immigration court in the same building," Nadler told CNN. HHS posted Monday on X that officers "responded to information that protesters were present" inside Nadler's office in Manhattan. "Based on earlier incidents in a nearby facility, FPS were concerned about the safety of the federal employees in the office and went to the location to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those present," HHS said. "Upon arrival, officers were granted entry and encountered four individuals,. Officers identified themselves and explained their intent to conduct a security check, however, one individual became verbally confrontational and physically blocked access to the office. The officers then detained the individual in the hallway for the purpose of completing the security check." HHS said all were released without "further incident." U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver, a Democrat serving a district in New Jersey, was charged with assaulting ICE officers on May 19 during her visit to Delancey Hall ICE detention prison in Newark, N.J., on May 9.

Analysis: Young people are skeptical of the American Dream

There are some striking divides in a new CNN poll, but they aren't necessarily the partisan kind Americans have come to expect: The divides are more gray than red versus blue. The first has to do with the American Dream, which a growing number of Americans feel is out of reach. Most, 54%, still agreed with the idea that 'people who want to get ahead can make it if they're willing to work hard,' in the new poll, conducted by SSRS. What's noteworthy is that when CNN asked the same question back in 2016, more than two-thirds of respondents, 67%, agreed with that optimistic idea. Looking at the new poll's results by age, younger Americans are less bullish that they can 'make it.' About half, 51%, of those under 45, felt that 'Hard work and determination are no guarantee of success for most people,' compared with 41% of those 45 and older. There's likely some partisanship behind those numbers, since younger Americans tend to be more liberal, despite the inroads that President Donald Trump and Republicans have made with young people. But the age divide exists, to a more modest extent, even within the Democratic Party. More than two-thirds of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents under 45 say that hard work and determination are no guarantee of success. A smaller portion, 62% of older Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents feel that way. Read the full report by CNN's Ariel Edwards-Levy. A second question in the poll asks whether the government should do more or whether it is trying to do too many things already. A majority, 58%, say the government should do more to solve the country's problems, up from just 51% when CNN asked the question nearly two years ago. More young people, 63% of those under 45, said they want more from the government, compared with 54% of those 45 and older. The government arguably does more for older people: It helps to provide health care in the form of Medicare and retirement benefits in the form of Social Security for a large portion of older Americans. At the same time, the ballooning national debt means those programs' future is on an unsustainable path for younger Americans. Asked about which party they feel represents their views on the economy, three-quarters of people over 45 picked either Democrats (32%) or Republicans (42%), leaving just about a quarter of older Americans who said neither party represented them on the economy. A larger portion of people under 45, 38%, said they did not feel represented by either party on the economy. Another CNN story published Monday might help explain some of the malaise felt by younger Americans. This is from CNN's report on the 'No hire, no fire' economy by Matt Egan: … Even as the overall labor market looks relatively healthy, economists say this is the worst market for new college graduates since the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Recent grads are finding that it takes considerable time to get hired, leaving them unemployed and saddled with student debt for a frustratingly long time. For the first time since record-keeping on the topic began in 1980, the unemployment rate for recent graduates (those 22 to 27 years old with a bachelor's degree or higher) is consistently higher than the national unemployment rate, according to Oxford Economics. The unemployment rate for people between 20 and 24 is twice the national average, and there is evidence that companies are adjusting how they make entry-level hires as they adopt AI advancements. All of that could point to a distinct lack of optimism among younger Americans.
