Cowboys 'High Vibes' Extend All The Way to New York For Coach Schottenheimer

Cowboys 'High Vibes' Extend All The Way to New York For Coach Schottenheimer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - All offseason, we have heard Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer discuss relationships and the connection he wants to establish with everyone in the building. ... and his goal of overseeing "the greatest culture in sports.'' Advertisement Now we've been inside The Star, multiple times, to talk to the first-time head coach and to watch his practices and his players. And everybody who talked the talk is now walking the walk. ... and this goes well beyond buying everybody Whataburger to sending champagne at Osa Odigihizuwa's contract dinner, to going Greek dancing with the QBs. 'I don't know if you ever get it all accomplished, but I feel really good about the offseason program,' Schottenheimer said. 'The connection of the guys, offense, defense, special teams, coaches, players, new faces, new personalities, feel really good about that. "I feel like we've just spent time doing things in the building, away from the building, getting to know each other. Advertisement "I think there's been multiple events, all the coaches in different sides of the ball have gotten together away from the building, I think every position group has done that, and that's so important, so I think that's been amazing.' Yes, and the "amazing'' feel-good extends all the way from here in Frisco to New York City. Wait ... what? Schottenheimer looks to have already won over the Cowboys players, not to mention the Joneses. Oh, and Cowboys Nation seems juiced by it all as well. And now even the national media is coming into the fold. ESPN's 'Get Up' on Friday reacted to some comments from Schottenheimer at minicamp, and the fellas lined up in support of him and his message. Advertisement 'That's Brian Schottenheimer,'' said former GM Mike Tannenbaum. I worked with him for a while. I love him. And you can see why he has the job he has, which is he is confident, he's relatable. From reporter Dan Graziano: 'Not just Dak Prescott, but I think a lot of players were excited about that hire. My understanding is it went over pretty well in the building, so he's a guy that is very well-liked and well-respected by the players there. "Obviously, he's bringing some level of confidence to this that I'm sure they're all feeding off of. "So, it seems to me that the vibes are pretty high in Dallas right now.' Advertisement Want to be a skeptic here? There is room for that, as two guys sitting in a studio in Manhattan or Bristol or Los Angeles can't really have a feel for what's happening here in Frisco. But ... That doesn't mean the "Get Up'' guys are wrong. Said Schotty to close the minicamp: "I called the guys up today and I told them, 'Hey, a couple things. No. 1: Take care of yourself, take care of your families. Hang with the ones you love,' and then I told them I love them. And I got a little emotional. These guys gave us everything that we've asked for this spring and I think they'll do that when we get started out in Oxnard.'' Advertisement It's extremely early in Schottenheimer's tenure as head coach; if he doesn't win in Week 1 at Philadelphia, the "vibes'' might feel a bit different. And if he doesn't lead Dallas to the playoffs? The "high vibes'' become a "hot seat.'' But right now? Schotty feels good about the offseason program, and based on everything we've seen and heard, so should Cowboys watchers ... from here to New York City. Will anybody coach the New York Knicks? It's a fair question.

The Pulse Newsletter 📣 | This is The Athletic's daily sports newsletter. Sign up here to receive The Pulse directly in your inbox. Good morning! Win your own personal national championship today. It's like the old saying goes: Four strikes, and you've still got to hire a coach. The Knicks had a wonderful energy about them as recently as a few weeks ago. That dimmed a bit with an Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Pacers. It faded more with the defensible but pretty aggressive firingof coach Tom Thibodeau on June 3. And now it's completely gone, as the Knicks have sputtered in their search for a replacement. They have tried to talk to at least four sitting head coaches and come up empty each time. Current whiffs: It's all been so public. The Knicks got the search they wanted, as Sam Amick writes, but they're in danger of winding up with a coach who was no better than their fifth choice. Or worse! Or, of course, they could manage to work something out with one of the teams above. For now, the Knicks are set to interview a couple of recent head coaches, Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown. Advertisement Just how big a deal is this spectacle? I asked James L. Edwards III, who covers the Knicks for The Athletic. He offered this balanced response: 💬 What New York is doing — trying to pry employed coaches away from their teams — opens the franchise up for criticism and jokes, but it's not that uncommon. New York doesn't care to win the headlines and tabloids. If it did, team president Leon Rose and/or owner James Dolan would come out of the shadows and explain the Thibodeau firing and hiring of the next coach. Neither will do that. They haven't spoken to media covering the team in years. The Knicks have and will continue to spin this as them doing their due diligence. And in their defense, New York is the home of the lone coaching vacancy in the NBA. The Knicks' need to rush isn't like other teams in this position. Now, to me, this all comes back to this: Will New York, without question, get a coach who can propel the team to the next level? I have a tough time seeing it. The Knicks' biggest problem is not the process. It's the likely end result. All fair. We can rubberneck in the meantime. I asked Zach Harper, author of The Bounce, to rate the mess here on a scale of 1 ('chill out') to 10 ('unmitigated disaster'): 💬 I'm going with an 8.5, which essentially works out to: 'Guys, this is getting weird and maybe you should just take a walk and clear your heads. Possibly throw on a guided meditation and figure out what you want in life.' You might get one request to a team with a sitting head coach. To be throwing darts blindly at the NBA rolodex at this point has to be concerning to Knicks fans. Perhaps someone reading this newsletter would like to throw their hat into the ring. Marchand, Panthers dominate Game 5 Florida is one win away from back-to-back Stanley Cup titles. As they have done consistently in this Stanley Cup Final, the Panthers jumped on the Oilers in the first period last night. Brad Marchand scored first before Sam Bennett made it 2-0 late in the period. Marchand's second was somehow prettier than the first, a dagger early in the third period. Our NHL staff has more takeaways from Game 5 as Florida inches closer. My takeaway: Marchand was unstoppable last night. This goal literally made an Oilers fan swap allegiances: KD narrows preferred trade destinations Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant has narrowed his preferred trade destinations to two teams: the Houston Rockets and the San Antonio Spurs. The Athletic's Sam Amick, Jon Krawczynski and Kelly Iko dove into the full list of potential destinations, explaining why a deal with the Rockets or Spurs looks unlikely and which other teams have reportedly shown interest. WNBA Makes Caitlin Clark Announcement After Fever's Win Against Liberty

WNBA Makes Caitlin Clark Announcement After Fever's Win Against Liberty originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There was no better way for Caitlin Clark to announce her return from injury than by turning in an awe-inspiring performance against the defending champions, the New York Liberty. Advertisement Well, that's exactly what she did on Saturday night as the former Iowa superstar led the Indiana Fever to a 102-88 statement win to hand Sabrina Ionescu and Co. their first loss of the season. Clark showed no signs of rust after missing her team's last five games due to a quad injury. The 23-year-old went off for a season-high 32 points on 11-of-20 shooting--including a 25-point explosion in the first half. For good measure, Clark also added eight rebounds, nine assists, a steal and two blocks, while also knocking down seven triples in their big win against the champs. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark (22) celebrates during a game. Grace Smith/IndyStar-USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images This is exactly why it came as no surprise that the WNBA named Clark as the game's Top Performer. The league took to social media on Saturday night to announce the news. Advertisement View the original article to see embedded media. In the same post, the WNBA also announced Napheesa Collier as the Top Performer in the Minnesota Lynx's blowout win against the Los Angeles Sparks, as well as Kayla Thornton of the Golden State Valkyries after their victory against the Seattle Storm. There is no doubt, however, that it was Clark who grabbed headlines on Saturday after her incredible performance. The fans missed seeing the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year in action during her five-game injury spell, and Clark made sure to make up for lost time. Up next for the Fever is a matchup against the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night 7 p.m. ET and Clark is fully expected to keep her foot on the gas for that one.
