MELAKA: A homegrown Malaysian furniture retailer and sofa specialist, in partnership with Ashley Furniture, has unveiled a newly renovated showroom in the heart of the historic city.
Ashley Furniture, the world's largest furniture manufacturer, is bringing international design excellence to Melaka through the revamped Fella Design showroom, now featuring the fresh Farmhouse concept — a stylish fusion of key design principles to create an elegant and charming aesthetic.
Fella Group of Companies CEO Yu Kong Cing said the newly renovated showroom marks a new chapter for both Fella Design and Ashley.
'We're incredibly excited to introduce our latest vision of furniture design to fellow Malaysians, right here in Melaka,' he said during the launch of the farmhouse-inspired showroom and the first Ashley Gallery outside the Klang Valley, at Lot 2008, Jalan Hang Tuah here on Saturday (May 24).
Also present were Fella Design's senior operations manager J. Jeya Kumar and Ashley Furniture Homestore (Morph) assistant operations manager Tan Fu Xuan.
Yu said the furniture retail brand, which saw phenomenal success in the 1980s and 1990s, rose to acclaim with its mass-market customisable sofa settees, influenced by country, American, and European design trends.
In 2024, Fella Design became a licensee of Ashley Furniture, officially assuming the role of national dealer for Ashley products.
With 39 years in the furnishings, fabric, and upholstery industry, Fella Design is now equipped with Ashley Furniture's broad product range, propelling the brand to new heights.
Yu said the two brands naturally complement one another, united by a shared sense of nostalgia.
"Combining traditional sensibilities with contemporary flair, our product line emphasises elegance and timelessness,' he said.
Yu noted that during the launch, customers had the opportunity to explore the Farmhouse Collection and Ashley's brand-new gallery, enjoying exclusive shopping perks, lucky draw prizes, and personalised consultations.
Meanwhile, the manager of the newly renovated showroom, Lee Gee Rin, said both the first and second floors of Fella Design had undergone a complete transformation in conjunction with the launch, featuring a beautiful new layout and displays.
"Furniture shoppers in the state appreciate laid-back charm and value for money.
'Melaka is home to a mix of traditional and modern consumers who value both classic designs and contemporary trends, and we aim to serve this market effectively,' she added.

Malaysian Student vs Vendor: RM18 Economy Rice Dispute

A Malaysian food vendor has responded to viral social media criticism after a student complained about being charged RM18 for an economy rice dish containing one meat and two vegetable portions. The student's post, which included a photograph of the meal, generated significant online discussion, with many social media users expressing surprise at the pricing for what appeared to be a modest portion. China Press reported that the stall owner has now provided her account of events, stating that security camera recordings reveal the student manipulated the food's presentation before photographing it. According to the vendor, the footage shows the customer using cutlery to reposition the food items, creating a misleading impression of the portion size. 'The customer rearranged the contents and didn't include the sauce in the photograph,' the owner explained to Chinese daily. 'This created a false impression that the serving was smaller than it actually was.' The vendor emphasised that the student had selected a substantial amount of food, particularly pork belly, which she noted is amongst the more expensive options available. She maintained that the RM18 charge was reasonable given the quantity and type of food chosen. When approached for comment, the student reportedly acknowledged that he had moved the food around before taking the photograph. However, he denied any deliberate attempt to mislead, explaining that arranging his plate before eating is simply a personal habit. Despite this clarification, the student continues to maintain that the portion size did not justify the RM18 price point. Iran says it has seen no change in US position on sanctions yet

FILE PHOTO: Iran's and U.S.' flags are seen printed on paper in this illustration taken January 27, 2022. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo DUBAI (Reuters) -Iran's foreign ministry said on Monday it would have to see if there are changes in the U.S. position on sanctions, as the two countries negotiate a deal to resolve a decades-long dispute over Iran's nuclear ambitions. "I regret to inform you that the American side has not yet been willing to clarify this issue," ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said in a weekly press conference in Tehran. "It must be clear to us how the oppressive sanctions against the Iranian people will be lifted, to ensure that past experiences are not repeated", he added. Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi, who has been mediating between Iran and the Trump administration, presented elements of a U.S. proposal for a nuclear deal between Tehran and Washington during a short visit to Tehran on Saturday. Iranian and U.S. delegations wrapped up a fifth round of talks in Rome last month and, while signs of some limited progress emerged, there are many points of disagreement that are hard to breach, notably the issue of Iran's uranium enrichment. Vietnam Airlines to finalise order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets very soon, executive says

FILE PHOTO: The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is displayed at the Farnborough International Airshow, in Farnborough, Britain, July 20, 2022. - Reuters NEW DELHI: Flag carrier Vietnam Airlines will "very soon" finalise a provisional order for 50 Boeing 737 MAX jets that it made in 2023, a company executive told Reuters on Monday (June 2). The carrier will need up to 100 new narrow-body aircraft by 2035 to expand operations and replace existing aircraft, the executive said, declining to be named as they were not authorised to speak with media. Export-dependent Vietnam is under pressure from Washington to buy more American goods to avert tariffs. The carrier signed an initial agreement with US planemaker Boeing in 2023 for 50 of the firm's single-aisle 737 MAX aircraft, but has not yet finalised the deal. Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In April, Vietnam Airlines signed a memorandum of understanding with the country's top lender Vietcombank for funding to purchase 50 narrow-body planes, without naming the manufacturer. The executive said Vietnam Airlines would be open to ordering Airbus aircraft if it could secure delivery slots with the planemaker, which has previously said its single-aisle jets are sold out through the rest of the decade.- Reuters
