Child accidentally damages $50 million Rothko at Dutch museum
A Mark Rothko painting thought to be worth tens of millions of dollars is undergoing restoration after a child accidentally damaged the artwork at a museum in the Netherlands.
'Grey, Orange on Maroon, No. 8' sustained some visible scratches when a child brushed against the abstract painting at the Depot, a public storage area of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
In the Depot, much of the art is displayed similarly to how it would in a gallery without traditional exhibition protections.
The Depot is currently showing highlights of its vast collection as the main museum undergoes renovations.
'It happened because a child, in an unsupervised moment, touched the lower part of the work. There was no intent. This was not vandalism,' museum spokesperson Vincent Cardinaal told ABC News.
The painting has since been moved to the museum's conservation lab.
Cardinaal said the restoration process was expected to be successful and that the painting would be able to be displayed in the future.
The museum did not release images of the damage, further description or estimates of repair costs.
A vandal who wrote on another Rothko piece at the Tate Modern in London caused about $250,000 in damages that cost 18 months to repair.
'Grey, Orange on Maroon, No. 8' has never been auctioned but it's estimated to be worth between $50 and $60 million.
'Untitled, 1968' — another of Rothko's 'color field' paintings — sold for $23.9 million at Sotheby's in 2023.
The Dutch museum acquired the piece in 1970 after Rothko's death.

Disqualification drama erupts as results overturned after Oscar Piastri victory
F1 fans and commentators are questioning why Max Verstappen wasn't disqualified from the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday night, after Oscar Piastri powered to victory to extend his lead in the championship. Piastri secured his fifth win of the season, winning from pole position ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc. The win for Piastri extended the Aussie's lead in the driver standings to 10 points from Norris, with McLaren winning seven races out of nine so far. But the victory was overshadowed by drama and controversy for Verstappen, who many believe should have been disqualified. The defending world champion crossed the finish line in fifth position, but was later relegated to P10 after stewards overturned the result. Verstappen was hit with a 10-second penalty for deliberately colliding with Mercedes driver George Russell late in the race. The incident occurred after a safety car with five laps remaining, which saw Verstappen end up on slower hard tyres against his rivals on softs. He immediately lost third position to Leclerc, and then went off track as he tried to defend against Russell. Red Bull then ordered Verstappen to let Russell past because they knew he was too fast on the softer tyres, and the Dutch driver initially appeared to do so. But as Russell went around him, Verstappen sped up and caused a collision, spearing into the Mercedes driver. It was the second time Verstappen had collided with Russell, and the Dutchman was also investigated post-race for an incident with Leclerc. Stewards took no further action over the Leclerc incident, but hit Verstappen with a 10-second penalty for ramming into Russell. The penalty saw Verstappen plummet five places in the final standings, although former world champion Nico Rosberg said he was lucky not to be disqualified. "It looked like a very intentional retaliation," Roseberg said on Sky Sports. "Wait for the opponent, go ramming into him, just like you felt the other guy rammed into you at turn one. "I think the rules would be a black flag, yes. If you wait for your opponent to bang into him, that's a black flag (disqualification). That is bad, that is seriously bad. You need to black flag that, there's no other way. That's something that is extremely unacceptable." Verstappen didn't deny after the race that his actions were deliberate. "Does it matter?" he said. "I prefer to speak about the race than just one single moment." Russell was scathing in his assessment of Verstappen, who is now just one more penalty away from a race ban. "I was as surprised as you guys were," he told reporters. "I've seen these manoeuvres before on simulator games and in go-karting, but never in F1. "Ultimately, we came home in P4 and he came home in P10. I don't know what was going through his mind. It felt deliberate in the moment so, yeah, it was a bit surprising. It's a shame that something like that continues to occur. It seems totally unnecessary and it never seems to benefit himself." RELATED: Lewis Hamilton makes staggering call on Oscar Piastri winning title Oscar Piastri's telling response after Aussie driver sacked by F1 team Piastri won by 2.4 seconds in what was the third McLaren 1-2 of the season. "We executed everything we needed to. I am really enjoying it," he said post-race. "The pace was good and we could turn it on when we needed to. The team gave me a great car and winning races is a lot of fun." Norris said: "Oscar drove a very good race. I didn't have the pace to match him but I gave it my best shot. It's a long race, anything could have happened at the end of the race. We both got pretty sideways with the safety car restart. It was a good, fun race and for us as a team to finish one-two is even better." Verstappen is an absolute disgrace 'suddenly accelerated' well then it's quite clear this wasn't a defensive move gone wrong he obviously rammed into him on purpose? You cannot do that at all, you have to ban him for Canada and no less? What a joke, anyone else and they're banned — Dan Castell (@_Dan_Castell) June 1, 2025 You should count your blessings that Verstappen didn't get disqualified for that demolition job he pulled on Russell. 🤫 — 𝓕𝓮𝓻𝓻𝓪𝓻𝓲 𝓕𝓸𝓻𝓮𝓿𝓮𝓻 (@Ferrari_Power1) June 1, 2025 Verstappen should have just been disqualified. He doesn't deserve a point. He doesn't deserve to be a champion — simon burns (@simonburns74) June 1, 2025 Verstappen should have been black flagged for what he did. Or disqualified from Canadian GP #f1 — Jeff Rooker (@JeffRookerj) June 1, 2025 Absolutely embarrassing & disgraceful behavior by Max Verstappen. Not how an F1 champion should act. — Steve E. Brentford ‘Agree Deal' with Bundesliga Side Over Summer Move
Mark Flekken Nears Bayer Leverkusen Move as Brentford Weigh Up Replacement According to Sky Sports, Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement with Brentford for the transfer of Dutch goalkeeper Mark Flekken. The 31-year-old, who arrived in West London only last summer, is now expected to join forces with Erik ten Hag in Germany. Advertisement This move marks a swift turn in Brentford's goalkeeping plans, and although Flekken endured a mixed debut season in the Premier League, he remained a key figure for Thomas Frank's side. Flekken Departure Signals Busy Summer Ahead 'Bayer Leverkusen have reached an agreement with Brentford for the transfer of goalkeeper Mark Flekken,' reported Sky in Germany, a move that underlines Leverkusen's intent to strengthen further following their unbeaten Bundesliga-winning campaign. Photo IMAGO Flekken, previously with Freiburg, had his moments at Brentford, combining solid shot-stopping with assured distribution. Yet, questions over his command of the box and a few high-profile errors led to speculation about his long-term future. With Brentford finishing in the bottom half and conceding 65 goals, it's no surprise the club are looking to retool. Advertisement His departure also reunites him with Erik ten Hag, who is reportedly set to take the reins at Leverkusen following Xabi Alonso's exit. The link between Dutch football's modern guard continues to shape transfers across Europe. Kelleher Topping Brentford's Replacement List With Flekken's exit all but sealed, Brentford have already turned to Liverpool in search of a replacement. Sky Sports News reports that, 'Brentford have approached Liverpool for Caoimhin Kelleher as a potential replacement for Flekken.' Kelleher, valued at £20 million, has long been viewed as the best No.2 in the league. His cool temperament and clean distribution have impressed in limited opportunities behind Alisson Becker. But the 26-year-old now craves first-team football — and Brentford could offer that platform. Advertisement However, the Bees are not alone in their pursuit. 'They face competition from West Ham and Leeds for the 26-year-old,' Sky Sports adds. All three clubs are in need of a reliable keeper, and Liverpool's valuation reflects both his pedigree and potential. Brentford's Strategic Challenge Brentford's recruitment model has long been admired for its data-driven, forward-thinking approach. Replacing Flekken will be less about reputation and more about tactical fit — and if Kelleher is the profile they want, they may need to act decisively in what's becoming a competitive market. They must also weigh the cost. Spending £20 million on a goalkeeper is a significant outlay for a club like Brentford, even if the investment is for a long-term No.1. Photo: IMAGO Leverkusen's Project Gains Momentum Meanwhile, Flekken becomes a part of a growing Leverkusen project that shows no signs of slowing down. With a new manager incoming and Champions League football secured, the German side are positioning themselves as more than a one-season story. Advertisement In Flekken, they gain experience, Bundesliga familiarity, and a goalkeeper who thrives in a passing system, all vital as they look to consolidate their success. Our View – EPL Index Analysis For Brentford fans, Flekken's exit doesn't come as a total shock, but it does leave a gap that must be filled quickly and smartly. Flekken had his critics, but he also had moments of quality. His distribution allowed Brentford to build from the back, and he played a vital role in Thomas Frank's system. That said, inconsistency was always a concern. Losing him to Leverkusen may actually be a chance to upgrade in goal. Advertisement The links to Kelleher are exciting. Here's a goalkeeper who's been learning from the best at Liverpool and who deserves to be a starter. He's agile, composed, and has Champions League experience under his belt. However, £20 million is steep. For a club like Brentford, every investment needs to hit, and Kelleher would need to deliver from day one. What's clear is that the club must act fast. With pre-season looming and a competitive market for keepers, standing still won't be an option. The Flekken sale is smart business, but only if the next move matches the ambition.
